The Packers have made initial contact with Lions free-agent linebacker Boss Bailey, but they don't have a visit scheduled and aren't in a big hurry to address their linebacker position.

Boss Bailey is Super Athletic and if healthy could be a REAL good player. He will be looking at OLB opposite of AJ Hawk....

Yeah, I thought Boss Bailey was a stud.

Has he had injury issues? I haven't followed the Lions.

Wise man...

Yeah, Pack is looking at Chillar too, but I hear that Arizona is pushing to sign Chillar so maybe this is a contingent visit with Boss if Chillar does/doesn't leave AZ with a contract.

However, I don't know if Poppinga should be replaced. I like the guy, his motor, and his attitude on hitting people. Competition is fine but don't outright replace the guy, he had a much better year this year compared to last.

Poppinga is nice, but old. Bailey probably wouldn't start right away but will prove to be a nice addition on special teams and flexibility to play multiple positions if someone gets hurt.

It's called DEPTH.

Chillar is garbage.

He played at UCLA and then for the Rams. He is not that great at all.

Boy, they're just having fun with the Lions headlines today, aren't they. First their Woody, and now their Boss. "Oh fer cute!" as they say in Wisconsin.

March 3, 2008  01:55 PM ET

Uh, Matt Millen? Or Henry Clay Ford? Can a trade that like go down?

"In an unprecedented move, the Packers public ownership has just traded Aaron Rodgers for Detroit boss Matt Millen."

Sounds about even.

Hi Curly!!!

Someone needs to remind Ted Thompson that he doesn't get to keep unspent cap space ;)

March 3, 2008  02:37 PM ET

Reading the messages on the Journal-Sentinel site (and to a lesser extent here), I'm still amazed that Thompson hasn't yet earned the benefit of the doubt from Packer fans when it comes to building this team.

I've never been a fan of Poppinga.....that being said, I think if they could retain him and sign Boss, it would add the same level of depth at the position that the Pack enjoy with their D line already.

March 3, 2008  03:55 PM ET

America's Legend----> How can you say Poppinga is old, he's only 28 and only in his 4th season in the NFL? Came off an ACL injury in 2005 within 9 months, and has played in 28 of 32 possible games for the Packers. He brings intensity to our LB corps, and looked really solid down the stretch last year. He's a guy that accepts challenges and would have that "Bring it on" attitude if the Packers bring in Bailey. And you can never go wrong with depth, so I'd like to see it as well.

Boss Bailey is an athlete. The Packers would have a great OLB tandem in Bailey and Hawk.

Poppinga is old!? He's 27. Boss Bailey is one month younger. I like Poppinga too, but we need more playmakers on the defense, not just guys who have "a motor" and make a few tackles. With that said, I'm not sure Bailey is any better.

March 3, 2008  06:34 PM ET

Being a die hard Lions fan, I hope he stays. He's young and he's got hella talent. It hasn't been so obvious b/c our horrible o-line can't keep any blockers off him. But, when he gets the space to make plays he is pretty darn tough. Being a Lions fan though, I also understand why he's being let go (Matt Millen's a feeble minded toddler), and why he wants to leave(they've won a total of what? 11 games in 3 yrs).....

boo, another sad yr to be a lions fan....seems like they need to take a note from our brethen down south in Cleveland....
