If there were questions about Derian Hatcher's ability to play again this season, he's about to end them. According to Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren, the defenseman plans to skate with the team at practice today and is a possibility to play Saturday against the Islanders.

the Flyers are already tanking, do they really need a big, dumb, immobile idiot back? I'd do everything I could to keep this guy out of the lineup?

March 4, 2008  08:32 AM ET

This guy's game was left back in Texas with the Stars. His game has been declining for years, where he is now an embarassment compared to the player he was before. He was always slow, but could make up for it with a bruising physical game. Now in the new no-touch NHL, he is a dinosaur.

You know this can't sit well with Lupul. Now he has to keep an eye out for 6 players ready to level him...

You guys making fun of an old man, like you,re never going to age.Ovechkin happened to catch wind of him, in this picture, after 2 rough periods with the same depends on.Seriously, though, they need to unload him.

March 4, 2008  01:20 PM ET

I don't think Ovechkin is covering his face because he is afraid of an elbow. I think he just doesn't want to be photographed next to Hatcher.

March 4, 2008  03:26 PM ET

Send him to a retirement home. Flyers don't need him.

March 4, 2008  04:01 PM ET

I used to rip him just like how you guys have, but this season he wasn't as bad as he was last year. In 07 he was slow and didn't have any physical presence. This season he was still slow but had been laying people out, both on other teams and our own. After this injury though, I think its a sign that the flyer's should let him go, and Smith too while there at it. 2 old warriors that just need to step away form the game.

March 4, 2008  04:55 PM ET

I am not really ripping him here Thug. I am just saying he needs to retire.

March 4, 2008  05:02 PM ET

Are you kidding me Thug??? Smith is arguably our best defenseman...I agree that the Flyers are better off without Hatcher, but a bigger problem may just be the rookie Ryan Parent who is clearly NOT ready for the NHL. The Flyers need to call up Gauthier and send Parent back down to the Phantoms

March 4, 2008  08:00 PM ET

Did you hear that kids? Grampa's back! Hopefully he won't try to kill off another one of his teammates!

March 5, 2008  12:28 AM ET

You know how hard it is to skate down the ice knowing that 2 defenders named assault and battery are waiting for you just inside their blue line? I really feel for the flyers now - not only do they have to face those two guys named assault and battery but now they also have to worry about a guy named hatcher in their rear end trying to level ANYTHING in his directional path (which just happens to be you). Life is just not fair.

It's tough to admit, but the way the Flyers have played in the last month, they need a big defenseman. They have absolutely no physical game anymore. Even if Hatcher can barely move around, they need someone to make hits and clear out the front of the net.

Size seems to be an overall problem with this team. They went from two extremes since the lockout - a big, slow defensive core to a shorter, smaller defensive core. They have no size on offense either, which is why they can't win battles along the boards and establish an effective forecheck at even strength. It's frustrating to watch either end of the ice anymore.

Time to make some moves, Homer.
