Harvard commit recruiting violations?

Harvard and the Ivy League have said they will review the possibility that the Crimson men's basketball program committed recruiting violations. The Ivy League released a short statement Tuesday after an article in The New York Times on Sunday described how Kenny Blakeney, now a Crimson assistant coach, visited two Harvard recruits and played pickup basketball with them during times when contact with recruits was prohibited. One of the recruits said the visit occurred before Blakeney was officially hired on Coach Tommy Amaker's staff at Harvard, but it would still be prohibited because the NCAA would consider him a representative of the university.

I think Ammaker and Sampson text message each other every once in a while..

Haha what kind of violations are they guilty of? Helping them with their SAT?

March 5, 2008  11:51 AM ET

If I was the Harvard coach I would recruit people from out of prison. I mean it would make things more interesting.

March 5, 2008  12:03 PM ET

For a moment, I thought it was because they recruited somebody with a 2390 on the new SAT (1590 under the old one).

Didn't know the Ivy League recruited, or offered sports scholarships

March 5, 2008  04:47 PM ET

They recruit, but they do not offer scholarships. None of the Ivy's give out athletic scholarships. They probably give them huge financial aid packages, or find some other loop holes to get them in.

Since when did Harvard have to recruit anybody for anything????
Recruiting for a better sports program at Harvard, the school with the largest endowment in the history of the world and they are recruiting basketball players.........unbelieveable!!!!

Just when I'd thought I'd heard it all.

There's a formula for how low an Ivy can go academically to 'recruit' an athlete to play there. If you think all the athletes at Ivy League schools are rocket scientists, you're mistaken. Penn dipped below this line in the late 80's and forced a football coach to resign over it. The Ivies usually police themselves.
