Jets veterans green with envy

While the Jets have generated excitement by acquiring four big-money players, some of the team's returning veterans are looking at the bundles of cash and wondering, "When do I get mine? You pay guys you don't even know, and the guys in the locker room - the guys that have your back - you don't give a damn about them," one player said Tuesday, speaking on the condition of anonymity. "It shows where the loyalty is."

The other side of FA. Of course it hurts as much, or more, than it helps. Players feel the same as you would if they bring in someone new , give them up to ten times as much, to do the same thing you do for them...They see it as a loyalty thing...

Pace was really overpaid. From being a first round bust to having on Good season as a 3-4 OLB. Then he becomes one of the highest paid Defenders.....just like that.

Damien Woody is good, but he started 5 games in his entire career at RT and they sign him to a huge contract for RT. He is 6-3 340 with short arms and he is 30. He played mainly center and both guard spots. Talk about a leap of faith.....

L. Coles is whining.....He isn't very good to begin with and he wants a raise. Well you are over 30 and not as productive.......Cut him and Pennington. Chad is nothing more than a backup and to be making 6 Million to sit on the bench this year??? Crazy.

March 5, 2008  07:12 AM ET

But in all honesty.....These were the 4 positions that the Jets had to get better at.

LG, NT, OLB, and RT.

With the aqusitions they made, with some stability at QB, they could be right back in the playoffs.

If you have a problem Coles or whoever else is yapping talk to your union rep. It was your union which represents your interests that agreed to a CBA that dramatically increased the salary cap in way too short a time-frame. What did you think was going to happen when teams had mega-millions to spend they were going to renegotiate all their existing contracts to make things "even"? Maybe your union shoulda thought of including that into a new CBA.

The contract situation in the NFL is becoming more and more out of hand. Players get front-loaded contracts then after the bulk of the money is gone and it APPEARS (emphasis on appears) they are being underpaid they **** and moan and hold out.

And don't even get me started on the rookie contracts.

But again this all comes back to your failed union leadership screwing the veterans over.

Shoring up the O-line makes the Jets less dependent on their quarterback play. The Jets are looking to become a team that shortens games by running the ball and eating the clock. I don't know if those RB's they have can stay healthy enough though. If I were Warrick Dunn's agent, I would expect a call.

March 5, 2008  07:29 AM ET

They are not going to go after Dunn when they could easily have McFadden fall to them, and if not him a plethora of other backs in the draft are available.

The team went 4-12 last year...did they expect raises??

team chemistry wrecked before pre-season starts.

another lost season coming.

Free agency signing never reallyhelp your team win the big game. Darfting a developing talent help you win.

Last off-season the Giants signed one free agent, Kawika Mitchell LB, and now he's a Buffalo Bill. Yet the Giants won the Super Bowl as 7 of their draft picks from last season made big plays against the Patriots in that Super Bowl victory.

Draft wisely and sign your own guys. A winning tradition that never fails.

Ahh should be another wonderful season for manginabitch

Couldn't have happened to a nicer RAT !! Hey Mangenius your prediction for 2008...an invitation to the unemployment line.

March 5, 2008  08:10 AM ET

Hey 50yearfan,
I hear what your saying and have to agree. But does that still make it right? The newbies make oddles more $$$ and in many cases play less years. Sounds sad, but that may be just the way things are in the NFL and even elsewhere. Almost shows an indifference for your everyday and everydown player who doesn't get the BIG salary.

March 5, 2008  08:10 AM ET

If they start winning again, all will be forgiven.

March 5, 2008  08:11 AM ET

I will laugh when the Jets almost make the playoffs. With these moves.......they overpaid on some but they addressed all the bad spots.

If they are able to get OLB Vernon Gholston.......That will put the Jets into the playoffs.

March 5, 2008  08:13 AM ET

Hmm....4-12? Two words vets....PLAY BETTER!!!! Then they wouldn't feel the need to bring in high priced FAs to help your sorry whining asses win some games.
