Papelbon airs differences with Sox

You can count Jonathan Papelbon among a growing group of rising stars who are going public with their struggles to get a big pay raise. Yesterday, the Red Sox closer aired his differences with his employer. Talks about a long-term deal between him and the club have broken down, said Papelbon. The Sox are believed to be talking to Papelbon about a pay raise much more modest than the nearly 100 percent increase he is seeking. Papelbon made $425,500 last season. Based on Papelbon's save totals of 35 and 37 during the past two seasons, the club is believed to be considering a raise of about $100,000. That is far below the $900,000 figure Papelbon told the Providence Journal he is looking for.

Better watch out Papsmear...Bartolo Colon us lurking behind you..and HE'S HUNGRY

March 5, 2008  08:09 AM ET

Just pitch Paps, get over yourself.I mean I'm a loyal Sox fan, but c'mon.

The Sox should give some real thought to signing this guy to a deal. They are going to get creamed when he goes into arbitration if he keeps doing what he has been doing.

Over and above that let's not forget that this guy is a starter who converted to closing due to team needs, not from failure as a starter or lack of ability.

Are the Sox being a little pennywise and pound fooish here? I mean they sign Colon for what? They throw 50 mil at the Japanese market just to talk toa guy, etc. etc. etc..... and then offer one of their star relievers a $100,000 raise? at least split the differnce with him. No?

March 5, 2008  08:40 AM ET

Pay the kid and tell him to get some new shirts.

March 5, 2008  08:54 AM ET

They should pay him!! They are making a big mistake. I guess the Red Sox are reverting back to their old ways. Stupid losers

March 5, 2008  08:57 AM ET

Holybull: Yankees havent won since '2000...its ok....take a deep breathe...in...out...in....out.

BOTH sides need to concede a little on this one. His pay deserves a look-see. However, MLB teams have to be carefull with these early contracts because otheriwise third srting catchers will be lining up for more money. Its touchy for sure.

the only reason this is a story is because paps lacks the ability to keep his mouth shut. the kids only been in the bigs for 2 years. the sox will pay him eventually and everyone will be happy.

March 5, 2008  09:06 AM ET

Unrest in the clubhouse. Nice.

March 5, 2008  09:08 AM ET

Give him the $900K but stipulate no more dancing.

March 5, 2008  09:08 AM ET

Kepp him because he can dance the...

Marenge!!!!

March 5, 2008  09:11 AM ET

The Sox will give J.D. Drew 15 mil per but are only willing to give Pap 600k? Wow. He was integral to the team's success last year. He's only asking 900k man. C'mon!

March 5, 2008  09:12 AM ET

You are talking not even a million dollars. pay him.... deep breath my rear end. this is stupid on the Sox' side. like i said penny wise and pound foolish. $900,000 dollars is nothing these days for a team like the Red Sox. why take the chance on alienating one of your key players? And as I said, how much did they just give Colon? The Sox will make up that money in the opening day beer sales alone and still have mucho dinero left over for other incidentals. like lacy black numbers for their personnel to wear on those jaunts out into the evening.

I agree with 4192jc. I mean, this whole "sets a dangerous precedent" line is crap. The guy was definitely one of the top 5 closers in the league over the last 2 years, and one could probably even make a reasonable argument that he was better than any other AL closer during that period as well. The only precedent this sets is that a player who pitches out of his mind deserves a 450K raise.

March 5, 2008  09:41 AM ET

Can all these young players please follow the lead of Jeff Francoeur, who was also had his salary renewed by the Atlanta Braves and said.......nothing.

If these young players (Papelbon, Fielder, Cole Hamels, etc) do not like the rules, take it up with Donald Fehr, not your own team, who drafted, developed and allowed you to be the player you are right now.

Most teams will generally renew contracts until the first year of arbitration, then try to sign players for longer deals for lower than market rates.

Those players who continually go through the arbitration process are generally not in the teams long term plans OR the teams do not feel they can afford the player on a long term basis. Example - Ryan Howard of the Phillies.

Example of a young player signed early for less than market value - Robinson Cano of the Yankees.

March 5, 2008  09:47 AM ET

Hm...........

Paps, just shut up and pitch. You'll get your big money soon enough. Just after you duplicate your '07 numbers in '08, and beyond.

March 5, 2008  09:51 AM ET

Mr Joba...Francoeur is not on the same level as any of the players you mentioned. ALSO, he knows Atlanta won't pay him. It doesnt pay anyone.

March 5, 2008  09:56 AM ET

Wow way to show some loyalty to your players. The guy is a starter but for the good of the team he stays in the pen as their closer and above that he dominates. I'm a Yankees fan and I can say this guy is the real deal. He is what Rivera used to be... an almost guarantee to close it out. You mean to tell me the Sox are willing to give $1M to Colon (an outsider who has proven nothing the last 2 years in baseball let alone in a tough town like Boston) but won't pony up similar money for one of their own who has proven himself? And then teams wonder why years later when a player decides to walk and go to free agency instead of signing a long term deal at a home town discount.

March 5, 2008  10:06 AM ET

Mets are taking the same chance with John Maine in my opinion. look the teams have this right but would it hurt to pad the money just a few 100 thou more so that when the player does go to arbitration down the road that the guy's agent doesn't bring it back up to bite the team in the rear? We are not talking millions here. Maine has used the tactic to not sign his contract "... as a procedural move to acknowledge dissent, which can be mentioned in future years in arbitration hearings."
just saying.. give them a little more now and the open the door tot alk.. it is money well invested and is not that big of an expenditure for the time being. A little money now can cach a lot of loyalty down the road.
