A close associate of Josh McCown said the Dolphins assured McCown there will be an open competition at quarterback (with him and John Beck) and didn't tell him whether they planned to draft Boston College's Matt Ryan, whom the team continues to inquire about. Offensive coordinator Dan Henning and quarterbacks coach David Lee told McCown they already have ideas to make him better. ''I plan on being the starter,'' McCown told WQAM.

ever hear a QB remark, "I'm aspiring to be the backup."

of course he plans on being the starter.

Go for it McCown. If you go on a 2 game winning streak you'll be better than last year...

March 5, 2008  08:16 AM ET

McCown is better than Cleo Lemon. The Defense is getting better and quick. The Offensive line must get better but Parcells, Ireland, and Sparano are bringing that team up quickly.

McCown is no savior, but he is the best option that the Dolphins have had in 3 seasons.

The best option in 3 seasons? No offense, but an injuried Culpepper, Joey Harrington, John Beck, and Trent Green really isn't that hard to beat. I do think the Dolphins will be better. Parcells can re-build teams. And honestly, the Dolphins were in a couple of close games. And they lost their RB who was having a pretty good year.

jj730,
I know what you mean. I am just stating the fact. McCown won't make you say Wow....but he is more consistent than the 4 you pointed out, at this stage in their careers.

With a healthy Ronnie Brown, the Dolphins will be pretty good. By adding Ernest Wilford they get a guy that is good over the middle and in the red zone. The Dolphins just have to be smart and draft LT Jake Long. If they do that then they are 4-12 or 5-11

March 5, 2008  08:35 AM ET

Dolphin fans,
You have to be patient but Parcells, Ireland, and Sparano will build a team. Just give it at least 4 seasons and you will see way brighter days.

March 5, 2008  08:38 AM ET

Parcells needs to trade Jason Taylor. The man is 33. They could atleast get a 2nd RD pick and free some cap space. By the time the Dolphins are good, he'll be about 36 and no good to them then.

March 5, 2008  08:41 AM ET

I say the Vikings need to call Parcells.

The Vikings would be GREAT if they had Jason Taylor. They need a Pass rushing DE more than any other team. They still have a hole at QB but, Childress will never admit it.

March 5, 2008  08:45 AM ET

its really no longer a competition because Beck is garbage and Lemon no longer plays for the Fins. McCown basically has the job because Bill will probably not start Beck based on his performance last year. If they draft Ryan then it probably becomes a competition for the starting spot.

March 5, 2008  08:46 AM ET

You put Jason Taylor on that line with the "Williams boys" and that is trouble for the NFC North. Matter of fact, that's trouble for the whole NFC.

March 5, 2008  08:59 AM ET

Hear Hear.........Only if I were a GM.......hhhhhmmmmmm......

March 5, 2008  09:30 AM ET

Parcells will end up shipping Taylor to the Patriots in a deal between old friends.

March 5, 2008  10:19 AM ET

parcells will never send taylor to the pats

March 5, 2008  10:52 AM ET

WHo would be his competition?

March 5, 2008  10:55 AM ET

I'm guessing Parcells will be long gone before the job is done because he doesn't work for an owner with the same vision as he did in Dallas, NY, and NE. I think he'll get frustrated.

I also question where the fins will go because Sporano is coaching. He did well as an assistant but how much of that was him? He hasn't proven anything yet as an NFL head coach.

I also think the days are over for being a "Parcells guy". He drafted well (and some not so well) but his style never has caught on with today's players.

Don't start counting those SBs yet.

March 5, 2008  01:44 PM ET

Wow lots of personnel men in here.

Good thing you guys know more than Ron Wolf, who has praised Beck. You guys know Wolf right? You know, the guy Parcells personally invited to a game to analyze players with.

I'm not saying Beck is the starter, but sources close to the Front Office say McCown is the backup, Beck and another will compete, while sources close to McCown say McCown will compete. Who do you believe.

March 5, 2008  02:45 PM ET

He was McClown with the Raiders. Hopefully, the Fins upgrade their O line or this guy will suffer a Trent Green-ish retirement.

March 5, 2008  10:01 PM ET

''I plan on being the starter,'' McCown told WQAM.

And I plan on being the reincarnation of Abraham Lincoln's grandmother.

March 6, 2008  12:10 AM ET

This just in - with all of his records smashed by Bret Favre and with Favre's retirement 40 something Dan Marino has informed Bill Parcells he will be making a comeback this year with the Dolphins. Dan was heard to comment - "if this is all they have for competition at QB pencil me in as number one" !!!

March 6, 2008  03:05 PM ET

I wouldn't have wasted money on him i;d have looked elsewhere for someone with a proven record like Culpepper or Leftwich
