RFR responds to Edwards penalties

Carl Edwards will be allowed to keep the victory and a purse of $425,675, but should Edwards qualify for the season-ending championship Chase, he would not receive 10 bonus points for winning Sunday's race. His crew chief, Bob Osborne, was fined $100,000 and suspended six races, and was placed on probation for the rest of the season as part of the most severe punishment in the two-year Car of Tomorrow era. During the inspection last Sunday, Edwards's car, which is owned by the racing mogul Jack Roush, was found not to have a cover on its oil tank, perhaps providing him with an aerodynamic advantage. Geoff Smith, the president of Roush Fenway Racing, said in a statement that the bolt holding the lid in place failed during the race, then added, "It's a tough business for any race team to have to pledge $100,000, 100 points and a six-race crew chief suspension as an indemnity payment to NASCAR against a promise forced from us by NASCAR that no bolt will ever fail its purpose under race conditions."

Why have a rule book at all. What is the point if you can get fined for things not in the rules. Nascar just makes it up as they go along. Think what Baseball would be like if a pitcher suddenly found a cool new way to pitch then they suspended after the game because well it wasn't fair, even if the rules allow it.

Why not fine Jeff Gordon too, i'm sure his car failed inspection after the race. Oh what's that he crashed? Well what difference does it make if you crash or a part fails. I guess every winner should just wreck his car after the race to prevent this petty crap. Isn't this why we have a pre-race inspection? To make sure the car is legal to race. And don't even get me started on fines for things they catch before the race even starts. Like the bolts for Jr. last year. And they even gave him a disadvantage, it has to be the worst system of punishment in any sport.

I think NASCAR is just lashing out from frustration. Chevy and Hendrick haven't dominated the sport thus far this year like they are "supposed" to.

Of course NASCAR will deny having it in for Roush, contrary to the evidence. What was the punishment for the Nationwide teams that committed the same crime? 25 points and $25000?

What a crock...

March 6, 2008  06:11 AM ET

The idea of a bolt coming loose is a little bit like a bunch of BS. You won the friggin race and you got more air into the engine. Perhaps they should put two friggin screws on the lid? It is just like steroids. People are willing to cheat to win. Plain and simple.

March 6, 2008  07:25 AM ET

Bond: You know absolutely NOTHING about racing, do you? Bolts coming loose? TIRES fall off! Hood pins fall out! Cars have mechanical failures all the time!

Until someone can prove that the lack of a cover confers a definite advantage (even NASCAR uses "perhaps" in their statement), it is just as likely to be a failure as intentional...

March 6, 2008  07:37 AM ET

Carl Edwards was caught cheating. He shpuld forfeit the win . If a driver wins a race, but then gets caught cheating during the post race inspection, he should forfeit the race along with docking 100 points. There should be a rule for that.

March 6, 2008  07:45 AM ET

As far as exceptions not found in the rule book.....the rule book sets the guidelines and the teams try to find advantages not covered by the rules...has been going on for 50 years.

March 6, 2008  07:58 AM ET

sounds like all the ford fans are hollering that it is unfair and the jr fans are holler it is not fair enough...... can't make em all happy all the time....

Is there anyone out there that has evidence to finally put this dead horse to rest? does this give an advantage or not? Anybody ?

March 6, 2008  08:35 AM ET

Seems like a very harsh penality to me, especially if it was a part failure. But there is no way to prove if that screw failed!! I truely beileve NASCAR will put a stop to all cheating on purpose soon with these strict penalities!!!

March 6, 2008  08:35 AM ET

Can someone PLEASE explain to me why NASCAR let's Carl "keep" the win but takes away everything that the win gives? 100 points out the window and no 10 points when he makes the Chase...Does anyone really believe that the fine money is an incentive to these guys? Its all about the points.

I think NASCAR has its head up its...where the sun don't shine, but its stupid to let him keep the win but make it not a win.

March 6, 2008  09:01 AM ET

The oil box is located behind the driver. It is an insulated container designed to keep the scalding oil from frying the driver should the oil tank rupture. ( It sits in the oil-box.) The box is open to the ground underneath, thus allowing 200 air to travel into the cockpit of the car. This creates an air-pressure change between the car and the track, allowing it to suck or stick better to the track. Lap times would be quicker...also running with worn tires would be easier at th end of a long green-flag stint.
He cheated...The nationwide penalty was for "loose" bolts..not a complete lid removal.

March 6, 2008  09:30 AM ET

johnnyrunner-Thanks , that was a great explaination!!! I had no clue why just a cap off would be an advantage!

March 6, 2008  09:35 AM ET

Good call johnny! Glad to see somebody knows what they are talking about here.

March 6, 2008  09:43 AM ET

It should be easy enough to determine once and for all if there's an advantage or not - put the car in a wind tunnel and measure its downforce with and without the lid. I had thought that was why NASCAR brought the car back to NC.

March 6, 2008  09:46 AM ET

Now that's just not smart. Jr got penalized last year when at a time when Nascar said no messing with anything on the COTand they were serious about it just like with JJ and JG with the fenders. They established their baseline for any penalty infractions. Really how can you compare a crash or a part failure to a lack competence.

March 6, 2008  09:47 AM ET

JOHNNYRUNNER-THAT IS A GREAT EXPLAINATION. YOU NEED TO BE IN THE BOOTH WITH DW THIS WEEKEND. ARE YOU SURE YOU DONT WORK WITH NASCAR?

March 6, 2008  09:58 AM ET

With that being said the penalty is too harsh, they went overboard on this one. Obviously this is a new year and well their adding penalties to their so called rule book. It should have been either one or the other, either 100pts or 10pts from the chase.
Penalizing him with both seems really stupid because if he didn't win the race it probably would just have been 100pts. Is Nascar saying even without a win, if there is an infraction with the COT they are taking 10 chase points or is that only if you win the race.
Personally they made Cousin Carl an example but they have set the standard for what infractions will be let's see if its going to be consistent.

March 6, 2008  10:30 AM ET

nascaraorin- You're right. NASCAR has put themself in a position now that they are going to have to be very strict-it doesn't matter who the driver or team owner is... By making this such a harsh penality they have backed themselves into a deep corner!!! Can't wait till the next driver does something and seeing if they stick to their guns!!!!

March 6, 2008  10:39 AM ET

The penalty is the same that other teams got last year on COT infraction. Why the suprise??

March 6, 2008  12:03 PM ET

In racin' there are NO coicidences...If you ain't cheatin' you ain't tryin'. BUT if you get caught messin' with Bill France's spec series COT. You will get slammed! Rousch knows this. If you get to keep the win good enough for him. It is more important to the sponsors to get into the winners circle than support some guy who is toolin' around for points in an "admirable top-10". So if the crew chief gets a holiday from the track and has to have an 100,000 dollar bonus cheque made out to him to send to NASCAR then it seems like Rousch has succeeded in keeping his sponsor happy.
Sponsors rule this sport. They want an iron-clad guarantee that pushing their brand will be pursued with the same vigor as building a good car. Ask a NASCAR driver how much he gets fined for not mentioning a major-sponsor every time a mic is shoved into his face. ( its in their contracts) I love racin' but enough sponsor coddling...geez
