Izzo comes to Weber's defense

Michigan State coach Tom Izzo, a longtime friend of Bruce Weber, came to the defense of the beleaguered Illinois coach this week as Weber winds down his first losing season in 10 years as a head coach. Even though the Illini (12-17, 4-12 Big Ten) will tie a school record for losses in a season if they fall to the No. 17 Spartans tonight, Izzo said Weber has coached exceptionally well. ''When a team has not had a great year, the coach gets blamed,'' Izzo said. ''But Bruce has done an unbelievable job. They may be the best defensive team in the league, as far as coming at you every second on the court. I don't think any team in the country wants to play them. They're not great offensively -- everybody knows that -- but they're starting to come around.''

FN forgot the caption on the photo. It should read "You get one more losing season and you're outta here".

hey well its true...idk what happened to his recruiting but i see the Gordon thing got to them pretty badly...oh man could you imagine the Illini with gordon on their team....ooooh..im drooling...

March 6, 2008  12:00 PM ET

ur ability to recruit is a big part of being a top coach... that goes for any college sport.. im not even sold that Weber can coach the guys he has and he isnt bringing in anyone better.. where are the top college players like brian cook, dee brown, and deron williams? they left town with Bill Self

Izzo makes a good point. Weber had some very good teams at SIU, and his coaching has been fine at Illinois. His recruiting has been the problem. It looks like that is turning around recently, and I think you'll see the Illini back at the top of the Big Ten over the next couple of years. It's on Weber to turn the recruiting around, but this guy didn't become a bad coach overnight.

Tom Izzo has ONE thing to say..........!!!

huh?

March 6, 2008  04:33 PM ET

Where was he for Mike Davis?

March 6, 2008  06:12 PM ET

where did he just stick that finger!?

March 6, 2008  09:41 PM ET

That picture says "I call my index finger 'O'."

it is amazing how someone so clueless speaks with such assurance. DeeBrown and DeronWilliams were on the Illini FinalFour team. Who coached that team? BRUCE WEBER!!!
BrianCook never left Illinois. He was DRAFTED by the Lakers!!!

This is too easy: Weber is having problems as a coach now because these recruits are the last of Bill Self's and mostly Weber's early recruits. In his first three years, he had the luxury of recruiting like he was still at Southern Illinois. Now that he's figured out that won't work, he's starting to recruit like a major D-1 coach and getting better overall recruits. This year's freshman class and the projected class of 2009 have WAY more talent than his first three classes put together. Give the program time and the wins will come back. Until then, the football team is an emerging bright spot.

March 7, 2008  10:23 AM ET

Big question for everyone: The 2008 class has only one recruit, but since Stan Simpson's signing, Brian Carlwell has left the team and opened up a scholarship. Anyone know where that may be going?? This year is a wash, but maybe another recruit can be added to a good 2009 group.

March 7, 2008  12:17 PM ET

Izzo is just glad to have a free win.

March 7, 2008  12:56 PM ET

Weber will be O.K. Just give him a chance. Thanks again for giving us Bill Self. Jayhawks all the way!!!!!!!!!!!

March 7, 2008  02:26 PM ET

johnnyhandsome im glad u read closely.. i said where are the top players "LIKE" the 3 i mentioned... they are obviously not coming to U of I... yea he led the team to a final four but if he cant bring in top players he wont return

March 7, 2008  03:04 PM ET

Thats the mentality i like to see coaches stickup for one another a coach and his team have a bad year and they school wants to fire them no loyalty at all

March 7, 2008  03:28 PM ET

coaches often get blamed too much for a bad season. I think weber is a good coach but it seems like he isn't pulling in the greatest recruits.

>Weber will be O.K. Just give him a chance. Thanks again for giving us Bill Self.

Appreciate your comments, really! It's great that they allow the mentally ill to get free internet access. Bill Self sure can recruit! How has he done in the tournament lately?

He better start worrying about his own house. He's got plenty to keep him busy there.
