Nine cities eyeing outdoor game

Commissioner Gary Bettman wasn't encouraging about the Blackhawks' chances to participate in, let alone host, the NHL's next outdoor game. Chicago is one of nine cities that have expressed interest, joining Toronto, Montreal, Detroit, Denver, New York, Boston, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. Hawks general manager Dale Tallon believes there's ''a pecking order'' for which city will get the next Winter Classic. The last one, on New Year's Day in Buffalo, was a rousing success. The Rangers' desire to host a game at Yankee Stadium before it's demolished appears to be the front-runner. The Red Wings could host at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, which seats more than 100,000 and already has been the site of a well-attended college hockey game.

I hope it doesn't become this regular. I enjoyed the game - and LOVED the one in Edmonton - but I enjoyed the fact that it was a rare occurence as well. I can respect the fact that there is a short window for Yankee Stadium, so no issues for putting one in there. But let's not be too generous in terms of how many or often these puppies are held. Part of the draw is the fact that its a rare occurence, start making it a yearly thing and it won't seem so special. Just my thoughts...

I think that once-a-year would be rare enough that it would still be "special". But, if every team starts doing it multiple times per season then it will just be another game...played in front of 50,000 empty seats.

And they need to keep the games in northern cities. It works because it's a "throwback". It won't work nearly as well if they start trying it in Miami or Phoenix.

I'd like to see Rangers/Isalnders at the stadium but it was 60 degrees here on new years day. Then again should the last event held there be a hockey game? I think they did a preseason game outdoors in Vegas once so they probably have the ability to make it work but I can't imagine the ice being too good.
Once a year, one game only would be good. Detroit against one of the other original teams would be pretty cool.

It would be nice to see that game at Yankee Stadium. It would just add to the history and aura of the stadium. Comerica Park would be a good choice in the future, too. I'd like to see the Red Wings either play Chicago or Toronto. Hockeytown Cafe is right accross the street, too, so it's a natural.

where ever they decide to play this game is fine with me as long as it's not next to a great big lake that generates snow sqwals every 3 minutes!

March 6, 2008  10:12 AM ET

If it's in NY we'll probably have the first NHL rainout in history.

March 6, 2008  10:26 AM ET

Phoenix or Miami, Trainwreck? We ARE talking about outdoor ICE hockey games right? I would think that we'll be pretty safe in terms of those cities not getting to host an outdoor game...

March 6, 2008  10:44 AM ET

They did an exhibition in 1991 outdoors in Vegas between the Rangers and Kings at Cearars Palace. They made the ice too cold (It was 85 degrees out) and it cracked. It rained the day before and there were insect problems during the game.
Apparently they have the technology but from the article I read it was incredibly expensive.

March 6, 2008  11:53 AM ET

expensive, indeed. I know all about that Vegas attempt - but Vegas has money to put into something ridiculous like that, unlike a city like Phoenix or Miami, which, while prosperous, would be less likely to put out that kind of expenditure

March 6, 2008  12:03 PM ET

I just hope its not a Wings-Jackets match.Maybe a Ducks-Wings match-up?Now that would be good.Or a Wings-Avs match-up?2 very good possibilities.

March 6, 2008  12:33 PM ET

Rangers vs ANYONE at Yankee Stadium, please.

March 6, 2008  12:39 PM ET

Rangers vs Bruins would be a good one.Original 6 match-up.

March 6, 2008  12:46 PM ET

I disagree with every year, but perhaps every other year wouldn't be bad. I'd rather see it moved later in the winter. The weekend before the Superbowl is a good choice. Much colder then.

Also, if they do one next year, the Habs 100th anniversary is going to get a lot of traction in the discussion of where to hold it.

Having one at the Big House would also be pretty amazing. They've got the practice at that field, it would certainly be cold enough, and Michigan is a great hockey state.

Another idea is Lambaeu Field. A double-header even! First game, Pens v. Caps followed by Wings v. Avs

I wonder what Fredo Dolan would charge for a Ranger game outdoors? I just got my platoff paperwork and they upped the playoff tickets about 70%. If the Rangers play all possible games the playoff tickets would cost $200 more then the entire season.
I guess he had to make the money he lost on the Knicks back.

March 6, 2008  01:52 PM ET

Have on the same year we play the Winter Olympics. Keep it something special. Once a year will lead to twice a year and that will lead... you get my point. Start with Original Six teams. Have one of them match up with the previous years Cup winner. I like a Rangers/Islanders game at Yankee Stadium. Or Islanders/Bruins game.

March 6, 2008  03:05 PM ET

hey trainwreck
did u actually just say miami or phoenix because im pretty sure ice wouldnt freeze outdoors in either of those places to begin with

March 6, 2008  03:13 PM ET

look look look. The reason why the Buffalo game was so entertaining was for the following reasons:

1. Buffalo is a HUGE hockey town
2. Pittsburgh and Buffalo? Not that far away from eachother, meaning you have a mixed crowd.
3. Buffalo had a great team, full of young talent and Pittsburgh has the names Crosby, Malkin, etc...

My opinion is the following Habbs v. Rangers.

1. Montreal is a Huge Hockey Town
2. Montreal has a great young team, 100 yr. anniversary, and against the Rangers they play well.
3. Rangers have the Stars, gomez, jager, etc...

Now wether to play at yankee stadium or in montreal... I would pick Yankee Stadium because I think more Canadian Fans would come down to NYC then Rangers' fans traveling up north.

March 6, 2008  03:21 PM ET

Hopefully these games will be happening more and more often. The Penguins-Sabres game was great to watch, aside from all that pesky ice maintenance. I'd like to see Montreal vs. Calgary.

March 6, 2008  03:24 PM ET

they need to play the game at state college in beaver stadium and let pittsburg philly go at it and divide the stadium in half. WOW that would be an event.
