Junior expects success at Atlanta

Dale Earnhardt Jr. is back in the top 10 in the standings and eager for Sunday's Kobalt Tools 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Atlanta Motor Speedway. The combination of Earnhardt Jr. and Rick Hendrick could reap benefits for both this weekend. "My daddy always ran good there, so I focused on that fact," Earnhardt Jr. said of Atlanta. "You could always count on him running up front at Atlanta. I think I liked the track before I ever raced on it. I assumed I would appreciate it and would like driving on it -- and I do. Plus [crew chief] Tony [Eury] Jr.'s style of setting up a car fits that track good. It has helped me a lot." Eury Jr. said he expects this weekend to be a race where the teams pit often for tires, especially with the colder weather that is in the forecast. Still, he gets to head to the track with a team that regained some moment last week after being involved in an early crash at California and then had to stay overnight for a second day of rain-delayed racing despite the fact that the car was already 41 laps off the pace.

His daddy was a racer and ran good on all the tracks. I respect someone that puts it all on the line week after week. You have to earn respect. Talk is cheap. Jr. needs to make his own way and leave daddy out of it. I wish him luck, as I don't see the same aggression his daddy had, in jr.

Jr. is not the same race car driver as his Dad was. But with the penalities for aggressive driving now Dale Sr. would probably have had to change his style of racing now a days. Jr. will get a few wins this years racing for HMS..

Not a Jr. fan, but I will be at the race so I would like to see him win, because the party after will be a lot of fun.

Good point Turfman (lucky guy). The race is just as much about the party as the race itself. Great experience...I am looking forward to Allstar weekend personally.

Doesn't every driver expect success at ATL. Geeez.

March 6, 2008  10:32 AM ET

I am a Jr. fan but it does seem like the media will do or say anything to have him in a story.. I can't imagine how sick he is of it!!

March 6, 2008  12:55 PM ET

Do you think Nascar would have put stricter penalties in place if Sr. was still racing. With his popularity he could pretty much do whatever he wanted. He put his back up against the establishment and won. There was a man with an iron set of testacles. He was the face of Nascar.

March 6, 2008  02:22 PM ET

Good point, Jr#88fan. I'm sure he is as sick of it as we are.

March 6, 2008  03:23 PM ET

I like the kid, but having an Earnhardt Jr. story every day is becoming ridiculous. Why not publish stories about Martin Truex Jr., Sam Hornish Jr., or Ron Hornaday Jr.? Since the media likes the name Jr. apparently...

March 6, 2008  03:41 PM ET

Just stay away from Mears. He has some bad juju folowin him around. I wish HMS would have cut Casey instead of Kyle. I don't like Kyle or Kurt one iota, but Kyle is a much better driver... probably even better than Jr, as much as that pains me to say.

March 6, 2008  03:57 PM ET

I think that's part of the reason no one has any idea just how good Mears really is... He has bad luck following him all the time. Be it a blown tire, wet spot, or getting run into... the kid just has no luck.

Dale 1rst Hendrick SCS win....YESSSS

March 7, 2008  12:07 AM ET

I'd love nothing more than see Jr maintain his consistency in finishes and continue to "outshine" the other drivers at HMS. Its not that I don't like the other drivers, but I think and hope this is an opportunity for Jr to show all the Nay Sayers that he's got the talent and driving ability to win races...lots of them. He's probably sick of hearing the comparisons to his Dad even if it is an honor to be compared to arguable one of the best drivers to ever set foot in a Stock Car. I believe Jr has that same talent and possibly even more. No disrespect meant to Dale SR cause I loved to watch him too.

March 7, 2008  10:31 AM ET

Shy, I agree with the talent, but, well, they are just different drivers. Sr was mean and methodical. Jr is calm and methodical.

I have to agree with some of the other commentors. It seems like we get a story every day on Jr and most of them are just ridiculous stuff that looks like they had to scramble to make it up. Why can't they wait until they have something good to write about on him and give some page time to some other drivers that deserve a mention.
