NBA considers new lotto system
The NBA may consider examining its draft lottery system after speculation some teams weren't trying their best to win late in the season with the hope of improving their chances of getting the top pick. Commissioner David Stern said he likes the lottery but wasn't happy with the way some teams played down the stretch.

Could someone get rid of Stern and bring someone else in? This guy is a freaking dino. There should be a limited term for commissioner.

How do they get teams to play better with them knowing that the worse they are the better their chances are to get the top pick?
I am not sure but I would take Stern over any other commissioner.

Stern has not been able to bring any positive changes -- esp rating -- to NBA. The way he handles problems is to get players to dress up in suits off the court and throw out irrational suspensions.

don' do that. If you do that teams are gonna lose all the games for taking the 1st spot.

That would be a terrible thing if the lottery was changed. Depending on which players were available, some teams would purposely tank their seasons to be the worst player.

Maybe Stern should look into how the Spurs tanked the 1996-97 season after David Robinson was injured? They were a playoff team with Robinson. Once he went down, they tanked the rest of the season. They won the lottery and drafted Tim Duncan.

Good point on the spurs case RWhite but if nothin else, the lottery is very exciting and I hope they dont change it, teams should have more pride in themselves to prevent them tanking but wot u gonna do

Now they're considering a new draft system. The lottery is behind closed doors with only Stu Jackson present, yeah cuz we can so trust him, to represent the players and teams. And what's with that stupid envelope crap why not just show the little ping pong balls. At least they could squash the conspiracy talk. Just look at the Nuggets history in the draft and you will see that it does a horrible job of trying to help rebuild teams towards the bottom. (there have been few teams to be at the bottom as long as my nuggets have)
90 worst team = 3rd overall = Mahmoud abdul-rauf
91 worst team = 4th overall = dikembe mutumbo
92 2 worst team = 5th overall = LaPhonso Ellis
93 3 worst team = 9th overall = rodney rogers
97 worst team = 3rd overall = tony batie (traded to sonics)
98 worst team = 3rd overall = raef lafrentz (best pick ever)
02 2 worst team = 5th overall = sketishvily or how ever you spell it
03 worst team = 3rd overall = melo (had detroit had their thinking cap on it would have been darko)
Since 1990 the nuggets have had the worst record in the league five times and failed to even get a number 2 pick overall. This is wrong, no team should have to go through what the nuggets did in the 90's. I have a hard time believing this is coincidence. This is blatant manipulation by the NBA. They even tried to screw us out of lebron and melo when we had the same statistical advantage as cleveland. The NBA didn't want Melo or Lebron to go to the small market Nuggets so they stuck us with the third pick. Thank god Detroit took Darko, and saved my nuggets from more years of ineptitude. Get rid of the lottery system all together it stinks.

One other thing about the '03 draft. I guess I am supposed to believe that Lebron going to cleveland was a coincidence as well. He only played high school ball right down the road in Avon. Tampering at it's finest!

Doesn't a system decided by standings create a more balance scenario? Look at the NFL. The idea of a lottery is idiotic, it is way too random and has no fair balance. Everything decided by a ping pong ball, thats Bingo not Pro Sports.
It should be decided by the team record with head to head record or divisional record being the tie breaker. Then you have balance because the weaker teams get the help they need and the stronger teams don't get to just load up.

I don't see the reason for the lottery either Big Cat. The clippers lost games on purpose to meet the nuggets in the playoffs and not the Suns (this is perfectly okay though). Then Stern said he was going to change the system so the two best teams don't meet in the second round. I don't know if he's been paying attention, but the two best remaining teams in the west met in the second round (#2 Suns vs #3 spurs). Now we have to watch the spurs manhandle the jazz, this should have been the second round series not the suns spurs. Stern screws up everything he touches, including the draft lottery. The envelope crap they have is lame, I don't understand why they just don't show the ping pong balls, this is far more exciting than watching baldy open envelopes. I bet it's because their is no ping pong balls, this is rigged and it's obvious to anybody who pays attention.

Oh people, come on...do you really think any of the league's rules are gonna change? Everytime someone makes a big stink about something (i.e. the don't come off the bench Amare & Boris rule) or now the lottery, you get the stupid complaints about stuff needing to be changed.
It's not going to change...just like the regular lottery, it's all about luck.
Teams should not be depending on their draft pick to revitalize their team. A great GM will make sure his team can contend by making smart choices.

Screw the lottery!!! Tim Duncan should have been winning titles with the Celtics and now the most loser organization in the NBA gets Greg Oden, the Jail Blazers.
This system is a joke. It's supposed to provide parity in the league by giving the worst team the best chance to improve.
The NFL has it right, bout time the NBA jumps on board. GO TO HELL STERN!

"Teams should not be depending on their draft pick to revitalize their team"
Yeah that's a ludicrous idea, why should teams try and build their team with youth and talent. It sure hasn't worked for the NFL huh. The NBA gets a bald guy to go open envelopes and nobody watches. The NFL builds the draft as the future and they enjoy super bowl like numbers because of it. Our complaints are valid, and not as stupid as the quote above, geesh.

Hey Buddy.... the difference.... NFL / NBA
EastCoastJessie
Total Comments (1262)
Why do you think there is such a difference? Teams are allowed to get better through the NFL draft and it's successful. NBA teams are not guaranteed to get a good player with the worst record in the league, and often don't improve. That's why the NBA isn't even close to the NBA, it's closer to WWF. I'm sure your favorite team has gotten lucky in the draft, just think of the fans of teams like boston who can't get a #1 pick to save their lives. You are right that getting upset will probably not change anything, stern couldn't change a tire correctly let alone a draft or playoff seeding.

Sorry to burst your bubble but I'm a die-hard Lakers fan and I happen to live in Boston.
1) I've never been a Celtics fan and wouldn't go to one of their games if they paid me to - they're a horible team because the players suck and the GM hasn't been able to make the necessary moves to make them better. Not because they've been unlucky in the draft.
2) It's going to take much more than Greg Oden to make the Blazers or any other team good enough to contend.
3) The NBA is not going to change the lottery no matter what happens.
Oh and by the way...Stern will be in office for at least 5 more years
