Is Richt's raise rich enough?

Only minutes after getting a $4.8 million pay raise approved for his football coach, Georgia athletics director Damon Evans found himself defending Mark Richt's place in the SEC coaches' pecking order. The executive committee of the Georgia Athletics Association board of directors on Thursday unanimously approved Evans' recommendation for an $800,000 a year bump for Richt for the final six years of his contract. Yet Richt's $2.8 million annual salary remains in the middle of the pack among SEC football coaches.

Pay him more to ensure he stays. You want a guy like this to lead your football team. Kinda like a Paterno or Bowden.

If Richt stays around for a long time, UGA will finally get back to the better days.

agreed AL.....they need to pay Richt what it takes to keep him long-term. go DAWGS! :-)

March 7, 2008  08:06 AM ET

man, thats a lot of money...but if anybody deserves it... its mark richt. not only is he a heck of a coach, but he is also a great person. I guarentee you that when players leave UGA, they are better people than when they arrived.
GO DAWGS!!

If you want to keep a coach today, you have to pay. While Richt has not brought home the crystal ball yet, he does have 2 SEC titles, which in my opinion are just about as good as a national title. After all, the best college football in the nation is right here in the SEC. Good job UGA. Hopefully, we will see you in the SEC title game this year.

PAY THAT MAN!!!! Heck pass the hat or helmont at a game if you have to.

Man, where have you been the past 5 years?

March 7, 2008  09:19 AM ET

But, he definitely needs to get more... Cut Felton's pay to pay Richt more... He has certainly done more...

March 7, 2008  09:39 AM ET

I doubt he leaves but you got to pay him more. He deserves more.

March 7, 2008  09:56 AM ET

72 wins in 7 seasons... 4th winningest active coach... Definitely deserves more... I'm sure he will get it...

March 7, 2008  11:22 AM ET

Sounds like this raise is about right. If predictions hold true and UGA wins the BCS title this year, they should bump his pay up above $3M+ to level the parity with Miles and Meyer. Saban should get a pay cut (IMHO).

March 7, 2008  11:55 AM ET

Who cares Florida and UT will own Georgia every year

March 7, 2008  12:08 PM ET

Saban gets 4 million a year and Meyer gets 3.5ish million a year.

So true....If you are happy with a mediocre program pay him

March 7, 2008  12:39 PM ET

Medocre Program? Just the 4th winningest program in the country while he has been head coach. Speaking of mediocre programs, when was the last Tennessee SEC title? When was the last time UT finished ranked higher than UGA? Try 2001 on for size. And yeah, despite last two years, CMR still has 4-3 record against the Vols.

The Truth:

Who gives a damn what you think? When was the last time Michigan won a UNANIMOUS National Championship? Well before our last one. You guys 1/2 National Championship in the last 50 years. And yeah, we were an undefeaed National Champ at that.

March 7, 2008  01:35 PM ET

Hey Truth,
Guess you decided you didn't give a rats..... about Tennessee after you found your argument was specious.

March 7, 2008  03:03 PM ET

It's too much money what happened to these schools they pay a coach more than a teacher to me that is just wrong and thats a big problem now with society no coach should make more than 250g's a year in any sport and with all the money schools would save by cutting sport coaches salaries they can add more scholarship money to kids who deserve to go to college when parents can't afford it

Big Dawgs,
Don't waste your time with Truth... He just likes to get people going... His arguments normally lack substance anyway...
