Do Sabres want Drury to stay?

For the record, the Buffalo Sabres are hoping Chris Drury comes back next season. If that statement doesn't seem all that newsy, you should know that it was, in fact, news to their co-captain. Drury made it clear Monday that he would prefer to stay with the Sabres rather than explore unrestricted free agency. He loves the town, loves the team. That is, he said, if the team wants him back. If, Chris? That puck to the mush affect your noggin? "Nobody has told me that, so I'm not going to assume anything," he said.

briere gonna go to philly i think drury should join him or go elsewhere without drury and briere buffalo is dead

May 23, 2007  04:23 PM ET

I think they both should stay....I think buffalo will be fine without one of them, but they can't afford to lose them both......My luck Briere would go to the Ducks.............

May 23, 2007  05:53 PM ET

chris and briere mus stay

May 23, 2007  06:24 PM ET

It would be nice if they both stayed, but not if it meant losing Vanek

May 23, 2007  07:52 PM ET

Dump Afinogenov and Hecht. Spacek too that might free up enough cap room if Briere and Drury will take a home town discount then there is hope they might stay. I think they can still win without Briere, but losing Drury is like losing their identity

The Sabres need to at least make Drury a serious offer. Not only is this guy worth it, but teammates respect him. The guys in the room know he is a warrior and if the team lets him walk without a lot of effort, that would send ripples to other players in next seasons training camp. Drury is a heart and soul guy the Sabres need. He scores, kills penalties, blocks shots and is on the #1pp. The Sabres lacked grit this season. They missed players like Mike Grier- heavy on the forecheck and body contact. They let a lot of defencemen off the hook. They have enough talent with forwards like Vanek, Afinagenov, Roy, Stafford, Hecht and Paille. They need some sandpaper, and need to bring back Drury, if at all possible.

Why would the Sabres NOT want a guy who is one of the greatest clutch performers in the NHL? If the Sabres do not re-sign Drury, they will still be a good team, but I don't see them going deep into the playoffs without him...would love to see him in a Minnesota Wild Jersey, but we can't afford him...Yo! Jacques and Doug, loosen up your coin purse a little, would ya?

May 24, 2007  07:32 AM ET

Hey bostongm...I'm an AVS fan and I would have to say...H E L L YES re-sign him. I couldn't believe the day we let him go. If he doesn't resign I hope the AVS go after him and get him back. Sakic only has a couple years left if that...we need a leader like Drury to fill the void. AVS have let some great young talent go the last couple of years. Drury, Tanquay, "Abbie" the goalie...if Buffalo can't sign him I hope the AVS do.

May 24, 2007  09:35 AM ET

Drury needs to come to Dallas. Let me rephrase that....Dallas NEEDS Drury to come here! With Modano aging and their scorers being mediocre at best, Dallas needs a player like Drury ti light the lamp. Dallas also needs a big defensemen back on the blueline. They were getting beat up by the freakin Canucks. It's series like that I miss Hatcher!

May 24, 2007  02:47 PM ET

What a stupid question. Of course the Sabres still want Drury. That's like asking a car if it still wants it's motor. A few of the players have to go due to age, no production and a lack of intensity, so some cap room should be freed up. I hope they can work something out with Briere and Zubrus too. And by the way, even though I hate Ottawa for knocking the Sabres out of the race, I hope they win the cup. The fans there suffered through adversity over the years and they stuck with the team through it all, just like us Sabres fans. The fans have shown up, filled the arena, avidly followed their team and it's fans like that who deserve the cup. But next year, after this years run is all over, I hope the Sabres kick the crap out of them.

Oh yeah, I forgot. To the first poster "Fraz" get lost chump.

May 24, 2007  08:28 PM ET

seriously why would briere want to go to philly? COME ON NOW. only way he is going is if buffalo doesnt have enough money. I doubt he would choose Philly over Buffalo if the figures were close.

May 24, 2007  08:30 PM ET

Did you just say Ottawa suffered through adversity? Your from Buffalo, how could you say that haha.

May 25, 2007  10:38 AM ET

Hey "White Buffalo". That was a witty post you made. I hear that you are becoming a cult hero on this site. Keep up the intelligent and creative work.

May 25, 2007  12:16 PM ET

Don, Learn to read. I said the Ottawa fans suffered through adversity..." just like us Sabres fans". As it appears you have the memory of a 95 year old man I guess I'll have to remind you that it wasn't too long ago the Senators were were in bankruptcy and Ottawa was in danger of losing the team as were the Sabres. You're a dufus haha.

May 25, 2007  12:20 PM ET

Fraz, What gives? Now you're awake? I guess you found this topic so riveting you decided to come back?

May 25, 2007  10:52 PM ET

they have been around since '92... they havent suffered that long

May 27, 2007  03:36 AM ET

they can't afford him to stay

May 27, 2007  06:39 PM ET

Golisano said they would'nt speand to the cap because they didn't have the money, then they saw how good the team was and spent right up to the cap.

Why shouldn't they look at this years' team, now with two (2) years of performance to look at, and make some needed changed on the backend and KEEP DRURY. Wow, if there's anything we need it's to keep him.
