Trojans may lose three to NBA
If USC fans break out the "One more year!" chants this afternoon at the Galen Center, it might be difficult at times to determine the intended target. Certainly, they will be addressing star freshman O.J. Mayo, a likely lottery pick in the NBA draft should he choose to make himself eligible, but they also could be pleading with sophomore Taj Gibson and freshman Davon Jefferson. The latter two players are also potential NBA early-entry candidates who could be making their final home appearance when USC plays host to seventh-ranked Stanford. Mayo was predictably coy about his intentions when asked Friday after practice.

I'll skip my normal sarcasm about college sports to simply say that I don't blame ANY college athlete who has a chance for a big payday to take the money. It isn't their fault the system is as it is. I do wonder however if there will ever be any controls put on agents who convince marginal athletes that they "can't miss." Any thoughts out there...?

I believe the NBA needs to move their requirements of age up one more year for social development before they enter the league, So, the league doesn't get watered down too fast. And the NCAA needs to up the monthly pay these athletes could receive to something comfortable, but not to comfortbable.

Imagine what the NBA and NCAA would look like if the NBA required players to get at least two or three years of college experience before moving on. I'd say they need to be two or three years removed from high school, as football does, but guys like OJ and Devon are 20 and 21 year old freshmen.

mayo will end up a knick and toil in obscurity. Its a match made in heaven. Overrated and overhyped on the knicks, its a perfect fit.

Frankly I'm disgusted that USC loses so many players so early into their SC careers. Where the sense of loyalty? Nick Young and Gabe Pruit walked away last season, and three freshmen/sophmores are talking about walking away this season. Aside from the inherent betrayal of the fans, these people do hurt themselves in the long run. The college years allows a fantastic environment for young players to develop and mature. On the other hand, NBA is a brutal environment to nurture young talent. It burns out more young talent than nurtures them. A player who has made a buzz for himself in college can command a much higher starting salary than one who only looks promising but hasn't proved anything yet.
Stay in school kids. Don't even entertain the thought of early exit before your junior year. It's not worth the heartbreak and the damage to your careers. The little money you'll make now may shorten a far more fruitful career in the long run.
