Girardi questions Rays plays

Spring training games are usually leisurely affairs, but Francisco Cervelli, a Yankees reserve catcher, will probably take issue with that characterization after the team's 4-1 loss Saturday to the Rays. Elliot Johnson, a Rays reserve second baseman, barreled over Cervelli at home plate in the ninth inning, fracturing the catcher's right wrist. Yankees Manager Joe Girardi said the play was "uncalled for" in spring training. Girardi was much less diplomatic, noting that another player on the Rays, outfielder Carl Crawford, was involved in a home plate collision earlier in the week against the Astros.

good ,about time guys started playing hard, ive seen guys slide in to home like its there wife behind the plate, a catcher gets leveled on a play <shrug>

ray fosse , pete rose and a all star game? ring any bells , besides rays

March 9, 2008  10:52 AM ET

it's too bad..just good hard baseball though, he wasn't going to make the team but hopefulyl he recovers

March 9, 2008  11:02 AM ET

Sounds to me like the Rays are starting to play baseball like it's supposed to be played. Maybe Joe needs to quit whining, and get his overpaid superstars to play harder too.

March 9, 2008  11:08 AM ET

Agreed. Isn't Spring Training and preseason games suppose to show you what your club has to offer? I like Joe, but come on the Rays are just trying to work hard. Like the other teams should be doing at this point. You play to win!

March 9, 2008  11:14 AM ET

Joe's just upset b/c he's a former catcher, but it was the 9th inning and the Rays had the lead. Girardi's catcher is young and now he is out of a chance to showcase himself. Sounds like a beanball feast is on the horizon.

so when varitek breaks a wrist in spring training, it'll be okay because they were playing the game the right way?

Umm, I'm sorry, Francisco Cervelli is the Yankee's Jason Varitek?

March 9, 2008  12:21 PM ET

That's not even relevant. I guarantee if something like this had happened to someone on your team, you wouldn't be so cavalier to say that they were just hustling and playing the game the right way. Girardi even said that he has no problem with it happening during the regular season, but it's pointless to do something that could hurt someone during a meaningless spring training game, which I agree with

The Rays have been pretty much everyone's whipping post for years... They have a bunch of kids who are hungry... So what if its spring training???... The guy is trying to get to the plate... If the catcher doesn't wanna get knocked on his can... Then don't block the friggin plate.... It's baseball... Deal with it

JOE TORRE WOULDN'T HAVE LET THIS HAPPEN.
where was derek jeter when all of this was happening? shouldn't he have set the bones and healed them with his awesome intangible powers?

March 9, 2008  01:23 PM ET

funny how some small-minded people bemoan Beckett's non-contact sore back but think nothing about breaking a young Yankees' wrist -- I see the old double standard at work here in these comments -- hey, all you Yankee haters, it is not okay to break a guy's wrist in the 9th inning of a preseason game, especially when the guy doing it will not be playing when the season begins -- enjoying and encouraging Yankee misfortunes will not make other team play any better

March 9, 2008  02:00 PM ET

Spring training is NOT about wins and loses, it's about being ready for the season. It's really about the pitching, and getting ready. Positon players will get in shape also of course. According to the article, that player will not start on the rays. If and when he does, pitchers have a way of remembering, Girardi does not have to say anything, he should take it in advisement, as the previous Joe would, Things have a way of coming around.

Hello Yankees!! There's always girl's slow-pitch softball. You fellows might do pretty well with that.

March 9, 2008  02:56 PM ET

I have to agree with the majority on this one. I agree you have to play the game the right way and that is to always win the game. Unless both managers want to agree to say before the game that the game is just a c hance for the players to get loose and only a practice then play the game and be prepared for anything. That means slide hard to score the run no matter what inning it is and be prepared to either block the runrner or step out of the way if you are afraid to get hurt. There ain't no clook in baseball. The Rays are trying to instill this into their players that you play to win and play hard and play right. Unless this palyer did something unsportsmanlike than come on get over it and play ball.
And, hyper , i don't think anyone wsa trying tos ay that the Yanks were gonna go after Varitek, rather, i think they were trying to say if it was your catcher who got hurt would you like it? and the answer is no one would like their player to get hurt but it happens. It is a part of the game. Again, unless there was something unsportsmanlike about the play, move on. stuff happens. I believe in playing hard and always playing to win or else why play?

March 9, 2008  03:32 PM ET

ITS SPRING TRAINING, A BASEBALL GAME, NOT WAR YOU STUPID MOOKS! what about pete rose ending a career in that all star game? totally classless.

March 9, 2008  03:56 PM ET

See there's the thing, **** like this happens, no control over it, the manager and team takes it in stride, As I previously said, Girardi shouild not have made mention of it. His inexperience. If asked by the media what I just said here is the response. Other than to say, stuff happens, This is dealth with on the field, later, if necessary, pitchers have a way of remembering. We all know what I'm talking about....

March 9, 2008  04:45 PM ET

Guys,

The Rays are a joke, always have been, always will. Girardi is right. You don't go injuring guys in spring training, but I guess this is the only time Tampa is even with everyone in the standings, so they tend to get a little excited. It was a bush league play. And it doesn't matter whether it was Cervelli or Posada getitng hurt, the play is still cheap. If I am Girardi, I wait for the first game against Tampa, and let Joba fire some 100+ MPH heat at Crawford and the other laughingstocks in the Rays lineup, let them dig in against some of that.

Joec: action speaks louder than words...

March 9, 2008  05:31 PM ET

He's just a guy trying to make an impression. So what if he left his "impression" on the Yankee catcher.
