Bucs: Simms future unclear

General Manager Bruce Allen said last week that the Bucs will take five quarterbacks to training camp. It will be six if Jake Plummer shows up, but that won't happen so look for at least five to be in camp. Whether Chris Simms is one of those five depends largely on how he performs during the offseason workout program. If Simms looks like his old self during the voluntary workouts, he'll likely earn a ticket to training camp. If not, he could be let go before camp begins. The next month or so is going to be huge for Simms - and the Bucs. A healthy and capable Simms may have more upside than any other quarterback on the roster right now. On the other hand, a struggling Simms may force the Bucs to spend an early-round pick on yet another quarterback of the future.

He's had a rough couple of years. Maybe he'd find success with another team. I bet the Falcons or another QB hungry team would love to have him on the roster.

Is he healthy?

March 9, 2008  12:53 PM ET

As long as Garcia is there, he has no starting job. They will cut him or trade him if healthy...If healthy, he is worth a decent draft pic, say round three..

Don't forget folks, it the tribune wrote it, at worst,it's crap and, at best, it's crap. They are absolutely incapable of writing a positive story. Doom and gloom is their forte.

Pretty nice for those 5 or 6 guys to have the support of the franchise. Seriously, how do you even correctly evaluate THAT many guys at the QB position to make sure that you pick the right player. If that's Gruden's idea of a plan, he should just flip coins. The Bucs are to QB's what the Lions are to WR.

Can't even beat a senior citizen in Jeff Garcia out of the job.

March 9, 2008  07:12 PM ET

Simms is a dud. Still struggling to stay on the roster after 6 years in the league. He just doesn't have what it takes. Maybe a backup but definitely not a starter. Witness his lowly backup-range salary. Without his last name he would get as much press as Tim Rattay. I've never seen Simms' name in play with any other team, have you? hmmmm...

March 10, 2008  12:48 AM ET

Garcia will start for the Bucs. However, the team definitely needs to take a quarterback in the draft (probably third or fourth round). In two or three years after Garcia is done or is not what he used to be hopefully the pick will be able to step in as the starting QB.

March 10, 2008  09:10 AM ET

I'd bring in Major Applewhite, maybe that'd motivate Sims to play better, lol.

March 10, 2008  10:38 AM ET

Keep Simms and get rid of Griese. Simms can still be our qb after next year and beyond. Guy throws a nice deep ball and he can get better on the short stuff. Let the kid work it out instead of bringing in another 35+ retread.

March 10, 2008  04:14 PM ET

They need to get rid of Gradcrapski and Sims, hands down. Garcia will start and let Griese and McKown fight it out for back-up. Either way, I think McKown can make it as a starter. I think Gruden brought Griese in cause he knew the system and it will give McKown a year or two to be absolutely ready to start...then again...who knows what he's thinking sometimes! Love ya Chucky! Go Bucs!

March 10, 2008  09:35 PM ET

What's the deal with the Plummer stuff? Even if he came back, he isn't the answer. Griese, Simms, McCown blah blah blah. What's the point of stocking up on second string Qbs?

March 10, 2008  11:29 PM ET

SIMS FUTURE UNCLEAR? HASNT THE PUBLIC BEEN LISTENING TO THIS PHRASE LONG ENOUGH? WHAT IS IT NOW 2 YRS? LOOK! RIGHT NOW, SIMMS RANKS RIGHT UP THERE WITH DAVID CARR, BRIAN GREISE, AND JOEY HARRINGTON, AND THE WORST, RYAN LEAF. THE BUCS NEED TO MAKE A DECISION: TRADE, WAIVER, OR PLAY HIM. PLEASE MAKE A DECISION AND STICK-TO-IT.

March 11, 2008  10:01 PM ET

trade him with Cadillac to Oakland or somewhere. He is extra baggage the Bucs don't need.

March 13, 2008  07:39 PM ET

What utter gutter licking inanity! All these totally uninformed opinions on Chris Simms. None of us have any idea what level of ability QB Simms posseses right now. He was the best on the team till he was nearly killed when Gruden put him back on the field behind a seive-like rookie/has been O-Line after he had to have a blood transfusion. But, now? No one knows. No reporter has bothered to interview him to see what training he's been doing, etc. So, keep on regurgitating misinformation and show everyone how little you know.

cval176, get the facts straight. Gruden did not put Chrystal back on the field after a blood transfusion. Simms was put back on the field nearly a year after his injury. His big moment lasted about 15 seconds because, as Gruden said, he was a basket case. An already-mediocre qb whose skills were further compromised by injury. ALL players get injured. The difference with Simms is that he is still whining about it and using it as an EXCUSE.

And yes, we DO KNOW Simms' level of ability. I was at UT when he was there - he was pathetic and it was embarrassing. Nothing has changed since his less-than-heralded entry to the NFL. Nor has he done anything to change people's minds. That is why 32 teams passed on him three times in the draft. That is why his salary is in the vet's minimum range for a BACKUP qb. That is why Tampa never signed him to a big-dollar or long-term contract. That is why no other teams have come calling.

He is irrelevant. Get over it.
