Speculation grows that Lute Olson, whose family medical leave from his job at Arizona coach ended Friday, could make an announcement this week about his future even as the Wildcats, under interim coach Kevin O'Neill, prepare to play Oregon State in the Pac-10 tournament Wednesday with an NCAA berth possibly at stake.

This guy has earned a free pass to do whatever he wants. Lute is greatness.

Answer: no, because he never gets his teams deep into the NCAA tournaments.

It's Lute's school. If he wants to come back, he will.

I wish Coach Olson the best, whichever road he chooses.

Don't get me wrong: I think Olson's a great coach. But this hiatus - and the fact that AZ is tossed out of the NCAA tourney many times in the first round - offers the school a chance to please alumni. I think they'll probably give him a buyout and make him a coach emeritus or something. (On the other hand, if O'neill fails, who knows?)

The word is that he is coming back.

"Never" gets his team deep into the tournament? Do you know what the word never means?

Let's review for you and your ignorant friends:
UA has a 23 year active streak of making the NCAA tournament that is the longest in the country. Lute Olson single handedly built the program from the ground up after coming over from Iowa. From ZERO he had them in the FINAL FOUR within five years. He had them in the tournament in his second year. He had them winning the Pac 10 in his third.

Yes, The UA has had many first round exits. 10 to be exact. They also won an national title in 97' and were runner up 01'. They were in the final four twice. The elite eight three times. 11 times they made the sweet sixteen or better. How is that for "never"? Also, 6 of UA 10 first round exits came in the first ten years at the school. It took a lot to get over the hump. The Pac 10 REALLY sucked back then and beating the hell out of the conference didn't really mean much. UA did what they could by scheduling tough interconference games.

Were sorry if Lute's hall of fame success was not great enough for you. Most of us out in Arizona (including a LOT of ASU fans) recognize what a great program Lute created. Despite a pretty wild collection of guys over the years, the program has been squeeky clean (sans Terry). Congrats to Lute and all of those who bring us Wildcat basketball. They have given us a tremendous amount to be proud of.. Not all years will bring titles or tourney runs but the excellence is unmistakable.
