Dodgers considering Inge trade

The Dodgers have had internal discussions about trading for Tigers third baseman Brandon Inge since before spring training, and it seems Andy LaRoche's injury could push them further into the market. Plus, in Scott Proctor, a 31-year-old right-hander, they have an established setup reliever they could deal.

I would take scott proctor and a prospect for inge in a heartbeat. Proctor can be the 7th inning guy, he throws hard and is a workhorse...

I actually like this. Don't get me wrong, I will hate to see Brandon go, but he deserves a chance to play, and Tigers need relief much more than defense.

March 10, 2008  09:41 AM ET

why does inge DESERVE a chance to play? He has been given a chance to play. He's a .241 hitter with little power and no speed. He has more career strikeouts than hits -that's ok if you can hit HRs and knock in runs. If anything, play him for defense and DH for him.

I would move inge at the first chance. he's a cancer. they have sheffield (aka chemistry killer) so they don't need any more negativity on the team. this guy is a crybaby.

Do it!

March 10, 2008  09:54 AM ET

if you hit .241 and strike out every other plate appearance, you shouldn't be guaranteed or entitled to a starting job in the mexican league, let alone the AL.

March 10, 2008  10:39 AM ET

I think Proctor would love to get away from Torre. His arm would be happy too.

March 10, 2008  10:46 AM ET

Baseball is not all about hitting. Yes Inge had an off year at the plate, but he is still a beast in the field. You will understand Inge's value the first time Cabrera bobbles or misses a ball with the game on the line.

March 10, 2008  10:57 AM ET

The Tigers would be smart to take this deal. Inge is an asset, but his attitude is wearing thin on Tigers fans and I'm sure on his teammates as well. I've liked Inge since he's been in Detroit, and has played for two of my favorite minor league teams(Whitecaps and Suns), but it's time for a change. Tigers need a relief pitcher, and I'd even eat some of Inge's contract to get the deal done.

March 10, 2008  11:07 AM ET

I certainly know that baseball involves more than hitting, but this is a clear question of value. Regardless of Inge's defensive prowess, he is hardly worth the money he is being paid. The Tigers gambled with his contract and lossed. At best, he could be a late inning defensive replacement. If Cabrera continues to hit like he has in the past, fans will overlook an error here and there.

Inge is not a good hitter. His "best" years (2005 & 2006) weren't even that good. Avg below .261 and OBP below .315? He strikes out a lot, doesn't walk and can't run. He's a 1 tool player - defense.

Cabrera will win more games with his bat than Inge will with his glove.

March 10, 2008  11:33 AM ET

This just in - the Dodgers have traded for Inge and made him their back-up catcher.

March 10, 2008  11:45 AM ET

AvgJoe, I cant argue with the value assessment, but luckily as a fan there is no cap and I don't have to pay it (except for ticket prices)...

I just think the Inge situation puts the Tigers in a no lose situation.

March 10, 2008  11:45 AM ET

kaycee, sources?

March 10, 2008  11:46 AM ET

Is it just me or does that pic make Inge look like the guy from the Alltel commercials?

March 10, 2008  11:59 AM ET

I think this has the potential for a losing situation for both sides. The Tigers are one of the top teams in the AL with a serious chance to go to and win the world series. Anything negative can derail it - and a guy like Inge has that potential.

kaycee has no sources--other than his desire to suggest the [clueless] Dodgers might in fact make the trade, and then bury Inge on their bench. Not gonna happen.

I don't think the Dodgers will make the trade even to cover their tails until LaRoche is back. They have Garciaparra, Martinez, Delwyn Young and Tony Abreu, all capable utility guys who can fill the bill. LaRoche's injury actually postpones the decision on 3rd--they don't NEED to go outside of the org to fill the hole.

Trade him, Provtor is not the answer, but he is decent.

You lost us: If the deal has a downside for both side (lose/lose, as you suggest) but the negative for Detroit is Inge himself--what do the Tigers lose by trading him?

March 10, 2008  12:34 PM ET

Tigers would be on top with this trade. Did someone tell the dodgers that he won't catch? Just in case they needed him there in a pinch, NO WAY said Inge, there is no "I" in T E A M. Proctor has a good arm. But not a rubber one. If not over worked can throw 95 on the gun, Set up man? maybe, its better than nothing, but he is a 6/7 inning guy...
