Recruit backs out of Harvard
Posted: Tuesday March 11, 2008 05:32AM ET
The centerpiece of Harvard's highly regarded recruiting class, Frank Ben-Eze, no longer plans to attend the university. Ben-Eze, a 6-foot-10 center who caused a stir in the fall when he picked the Crimson over Marquette, Virginia and West Virginia, has reopened his recruitment, according to the coach of his summer basketball team. Ben-Eze was mentioned last week in a Times article in which former Harvard coaches and members of the Ivy League said that the Crimson had lowered its academic standards.

Harvard's losing recruits. Cannot believe this is happening to an Ivy.

Report Offensive CommentAll schools lower their standard for students for a lot of reasons. Ivy League schools as much, or more , than anybody..that is how diversity is maintained ( and i am not talking race-ok )..Point being, it is fine by me if a school has a different standard for an athlete..fair is fair...Either it is ok, or the school has to have a hard fast set of numbers it will not go under for ANY STUDENT...Do not hold athletes to a different standard than the rest of the educational community..

Report Offensive CommentI never helps to tell someone, "you can't cut it academically because you're a duma--, but we'll let you dribble for us any day." Bad move.

Report Offensive Commentlocalboy54 |...It is called the Princeton B, you show up for class and you will get at least that...Stanford does not have C or below in their grading system...The graduation rate for Ivy league and other top schools like Stanford is 98.9%...Get it..If they let you in, you WILL graduate.....Not to worry...and with very good grades. Just show up...and pay or play....Need I say more. G.W Bush, fourth generation Yalie....tell me he met the standard...We all know better..And he knew it going there...Why not this or any athlete..
Let the kid in. go play , you will get an Ivy degree four years from now...good for him..

Report Offensive CommentIf you are getting recruited by a major program like Marquette, Virginia, and WVU, why would you want to go to an Ivy League school unless hoops are second to academics, which I tend to doubt in most football and basketball athletes' cases. This guy may be different; however, if he has any aspirations of going pro, harvard is not a place you want to go! The Ivy League is far above everyone in academics obviously, but they are also far below every conference even mid majors in athletic ability and competition! I bet good D2 programs could beat a lot of Ivy League schools.

Report Offensive CommentIt is oh so difficult to understand the complexity of building a university community. Our regular vocabulary breaks as we encournter racially loaded issues. To help the media, please try to understand how admissions work (not just for a college, but also for any business). Example: You have 100 qualified candidates. You only need 2 trombone players, but ten of the candidates are bonists. All eight of the unnecessary trombonists may hve otherwise higher qualifying marks than others, but they are not selected. You set you needs and fill the slots, each with the best qualified, but not always with the best marks in any specific area. duh. Another way the media could help thinking is to envision orchestras with only drummers, and talk show hosts with only straight teeth. Oops, got the standards mixed, sorry.

Report Offensive CommentMr. Kachmor, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Report Offensive Comment50 year fan, i am not sure where you get your info on university gradeing but all ivy leauge schools have a,b,c,d,f grading scales (although you can take all your classes pass fail in certain majors at brown). schools are eligable to join certain reaserch groups and thus get more money when they have a plus/minus grading scale, so top teir reaserch schools have that grading scale.
that aside, it annoys me when that i have to work harder in class than athletes and they end up getting grades handed to them. you can say that they work hard as well in thier sport, but they only practice 20 hours a week at most and only have to show up to class, while i study a good 5 hours a day outside of class and have a job on the side, in what world is that acceptable or fair 50yearfan.
