Seton Hall, Rutgers coaches go off

Which of Big East head coaches was a bigger embarrassment to his school yesterday? Was it Bobby Gonzalez, who charged onto the court like an uncaged animal at a referee after forward JR Inman hit an off-balance 3-pointer to give Rutgers a 64-61 victory over Seton Hall? Or was it Fred Hill Jr., who celebrated like a junior high cheerleader after the shot went into the basket -- and directed most of his clapping and hooting at Gonzalez in a stunning show of poor sportsmanship? Was it Gonzalez, who barked at a senior Seton Hall official to "relax" and "get out of my face" as everyone met at the scorer's table to watch the replay and make sure the shot counted? Or was it Hill, who yanked away his arm at the end of a drive-by handshake that would have made Bill Belichick cringe?

Yep, March Madness has begun...

This town isnt big enough for both of our below Big East average teams....hahah. I really want the replay on this one, nothing wrong with a rivalry and poor sportsmanship now and then. Just make the next game (if both coaches are around next year) more interestinghahahahaha

Seton Hall? DoJohn Morton and Andrew Gaze still play for them?

March 11, 2008  10:09 AM ET

The NCAA is quick to come down on players, Coaches are quick to come down on players. Still waiting for a Schools AD to come down on coaches like these. A game suspension from the School would be in order-but it will never happen.

Both of these teams are irrelevant now. Sorry to see that. I understand as a Johnnie.

I think this guy Politi is clearly an RU fan. He fails to mention that SHU lost Paul Gause this year to an ACL, that next year they return All Rookie Big East player Jeremy Hazzell, the previous year's rookie of the year in Paul Harvey, will finally be able to play red shirt forward transfer Robert Mitchell (previously of Duquesne & rookie of the year in the A-10 his freshman year), that they have the one of the top HS guards in the country next year in Jordan Theodore signed, Glover will have his certification to play after coming from Prep school, John Garci will be back as a senior, as well as Larry Davis (sophmore), Mike Davis (Freshman), Okosun (senior), etc. SHU was better than RU this year and they'll be better next year too. Nutter probably wouldn't even be playing at this point if Gause wasn't hurt. So I'm not sure where he got that Nutter is one of their most reliable players. He's good and they'll miss him sometimes but not his TO's and freakishly erratic shooting...they'll miss Brian Laing but what team wouldn't miss a player who was second in the Big East in scoring and a first team All Big East selection this year. It's just a stupid thing to say.
And finally, the ref that Bobby ripped deserved it. He should have called techs and traveling both ways. I'm not the only one who had problems with this particular ref.
This from Big East dean of disicipline John Paquette:
Paquette said almost every time the league looks into matters such as this one, "we've handled it internally." However, Paquette pointed out that the league did publicly reprimand Connecticut coach Jim Calhoun when Calhoun ripped the same referee after a win over Northeastern back in early December.
At the time, Calhoun called Rutecki "incompetent" and "a bad official" after the referee issued Calhoun a technical foul for being outside of the coach's box. Since that was his second technical of the game, Calhoun was automatically ejected.
I'm sorry but maybe this ref is bad...or does it seem like Jim Calhoun, perhaps the best coach in the Big East over the last two decades is an idiot too.
Bobby G made three NCAA tournaments with Manhattan w/less resources than he has now. He's improving the team...they won three Big East games last year and hadn't won a road game in two years prior to this one. I'm not sure what Politi is thinking but maybe he should look at Fred Hill's resume. What has he done? I'll tell you. He hasn't won crap and Politi is stuck living with that as long as he is coach. Nice guy but nice guys finish last and that is where RU & Fred Hill finished this year.
Good luck with that...we'll see you in the Big East tournament tomorrow. Uh, errr no we will not because RU finished last in the conference. See you next year when everyone gets in...

wow, thats the logest comment of all time...I'm curious next time can we delve into Adam Smith's econmic theory and its affect on today's economy?

March 11, 2008  03:03 PM ET

Don't get me started on Adam Smith.

March 11, 2008  03:49 PM ET

LMAO!

March 11, 2008  04:19 PM ET

Mookie: Respect the comment, but I wished you broke them into paragraphs. That hurt the eyes.

March 11, 2008  05:44 PM ET

Gonzalez is a blow hard. He should worry more about his underachieving team than whether the ref blew a call or Hill should have received a technical. From what I have heard, he's starting to piss off the wrong people at SHU.

March 11, 2008  08:45 PM ET

Mookie, you got to learn to say what you really feel. Holding it in will wear you down...

March 11, 2008  09:48 PM ET

That's awesome. NIT.

March 11, 2008  10:56 PM ET

It doesn't matter both of these coaches won't be coaching in the Big East five years from now! haha

March 12, 2008  02:44 PM ET

Hey Truth, John Morton is an assistant coack at Saint Peters...Andrew Gaze was old enough for the retirement home after years of playing pro basketball in Australia before he even attended SHU. Gotta give it to PJ C., he was a creative recruiter.
