Joe Paterno's future at Penn State is still unsettled beyond his current contract. Athletic director Tim Curley met recently with Paterno, although Curley said there was no timetable to make decisions about the future of college football's second-winningest coach. The 81-year-old Paterno is entering the final year of his contract. The 2008 season would be his record 43d on the sideline. Paterno usually meets with Curley each off-season to review the previous year. There is more attention on this year's meetings because of Paterno's contract. Curley said he spoke with Paterno over the last week, but he declined to go into more detail.

Bad news for Rutgers fans and good news for Penn State fans...

I'd put my $ on JoePa coaching until he can't run on the field and Tom Bradley taking over as opposed to bringing in an outsider.

March 11, 2008  07:32 AM ET

Isn't Bradley in his sixties though? I have wanted Schiano for a while now, and as much as I like Bradley, I still want Schiano to be our next coach.

March 11, 2008  08:15 AM ET

Why would you want Schiano? A coach with 38-46 overall coaching record and has 1 good season in a mediocre confrence. At least he'd be better than Jay.

March 11, 2008  08:29 AM ET

A true coaching legend, might be time to hang em up though.

March 11, 2008  09:05 AM ET

BigD - I think JoePa will have some say in who the next coach will be and he'll want to pass the job on internally. The other side of it is that because the school will be forced to re-new his contract, they might ask him to name a successor to offset some things.

Something will have to happen. Too many top PA recruits are going to Ohio State, Michigan, and even Pitt this year.

March 11, 2008  09:07 AM ET

I'm really fried that Pitt has a top 20 recruiting class and we're closer to 50th. Not to rag on Pitt but that shouldn't be happening.

PSU needs to handle this like FSU handled Bowden.

Force him to release his son JayPa, take the handcuffs off of Galen Hall, and maybe name Bradley successor.

Bobby, Bobby, Bobby

He's going to coach until he dies.

Making it to his office is uncertain.....

March 11, 2008  09:52 AM ET

With the exception of Larry Johnson Sr and JoePa when he occassionally comes out, the recruting has been unspectacular the past 2 seasons which is a major concern considering poor classes are what tanked Penn State from 2000-2004 (except for 2002). Something about Schiano leads alot of us alum to believe that he will do a much better job relating and recruting to the young talent that has been leaving this state the past 10 or so years.

Another wild rumor came out that BILL COWHER was at Penn State last month meeting with the AD. That would be amazing if he decided to forego the NFL and coach at Penn State.

Ya know what else would be amazing? George Bush spontaneously combusting.....The View getting cancelled...and all reality shows being removed from network television. But, just like Cowher coaching at PSU..not bloodly likely!!!!!

Our futures are uncertain

JoePa is a college football god who will not retire until he passes Bobby Bowden on the all time wins list and Bobby retires. He will be passing Bowden soon because Bobby's program is in a downspiral especially after his fiasco before his bowl game last year. On the other hand, Penn State is ready for another successful season. The only position of concern is quarterback, but Clarke is solid and who knows who else is waiting in the wings. I know PSU hasn't had a great recruiting class according to the experts, but those don't mean anything. No one can tell whether a recruiting class is good or not until after their time at the university is over! I truly believe Joe will coach until he dies and then Jay will take over the program kinda like Bobby Knight. I would like to end with saying JoePa is Penn State Football and watching him coach is a pleasure that I enjoy every saturday. Its not too often that one gets to see one of the greatest, most winning, and loyal coaches of all time. He is definitely one of a kind, and there will never be another Joe Paterno so just enjoy it while it lasts!

JoePa will die on the sideline-- it's his (and G-d's) will, and what JoePa wills at Penn State goes...

But when talking successors, what about that hot redhead--McQueary-- who took over play-calling when JoePa was injured? Why wouldn't he be on the list?

March 11, 2008  01:05 PM ET

Dmitch - if JayPa is named successor, there would be an alumni backlash and i would end up with broken furniture. How could you wish for such a thing?

March 11, 2008  01:25 PM ET

I think at some point after the 1994 season JoePa was taken to the old people home, and replaced with a robot, thus explaining him never retiring, and the weird behavior at times....

DMITCH.....thanks for the fluff full of BS. Here is where there is absolutely no fact to your monologue of dook.
1. "I know PSU hasn't had a great recruiting class according to the experts, but those don't mean anything"
2. "The only position of concern is quarterback"
3. "most winning"
4. " He is definitely one of a kind"
5. "another successful season"....of mediocrity
