Coach K reacts to ribbon jab

Three words conveyed Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski's feelings toward people criticizing him for not wearing a ribbon Saturday night in honor of slain North Carolina student body president Eve Carson. "Shame on you," Krzyzewski said Tuesday during his pre-ACC tournament news conference. "Shame on you for saying that." After Carson's death last week, Krzyzewski called North Carolina coach Roy Williams and his staff to ask how to properly honor Carson when the teams met Saturday at Cameron Indoor Stadium. They decided to have a moment of silence before the game, and had players meet at mid-court for a pre-game handshake. Krzyzewski said Duke's students decided to wear ribbons in solidarity with the North Carolina students. He was shocked to hear that people criticized him for not wearing one. North Carolina coach Roy Williams was grateful for the sportsmanship Krzyzewski showed in honoring Carson.

You tell em coach. People can be....and I will use a Clemens' wordology.......misinsensitive.

If this is true it's ridiculous! As an avid Tar Heel fan one could not help but be touched by the show of support to the UNC fans and students at the game. To a true sports fan that was a thing of beauty given the rivalry between the two schools. Classy of Coach K to make that call to Williams as well given the controversy between those two of late! Hats off to Duke!

(Ok got that out the way, now I can go go back into "Duke-hate" mode for the ACC tourney)! LOL

March 12, 2008  07:55 AM ET

I am already in full Duke hating mode...The tournament is town and I cant even find the time to attend. We dont need any upsets in this one or any tournament..........and Syracuse needs to win two!

What a horrific and purposeless crime - I appreciate the respect shown during last weekend's game. They need to grab this freak whose picture is plastered all over the place!

i am honestly starting to hate america. Enough of the ribbons and wristbands and magnet ribbons for your car, can't you just feel sympathetic anymore without having to force it down other people's throats?

March 12, 2008  08:31 AM ET

Coach K is the greatest coach of our time. I never got to see John Wooden coach, but Coach K does it the right way. This is ridiculous.

He is undeniably a great coach, but to label him the "greatest of our time" is a stretch!

March 12, 2008  08:55 AM ET

Coach K is an arrogant pr!ck...period.

"Things that make you go hhhhmmm"!

March 12, 2008  09:00 AM ET

i am a Heels fan, but that was a very classy and respectable thing they did for the UNC student who was killed. so what if he didn't wear the ribbon.....wasn't the phone call to Williams enough to show solidarity and concern? totally agree with the post about the Seinfeld episode.....much ado about nothing. :-)

March 12, 2008  09:23 AM ET

I agree with giantkillers. The ribbon thing is so over used that it meaningless. It doesn't even draw attention anymore. Yet the people who use them think it's enough, that they've done their part. Well, I guess if that makes them feel good. The truth is, wearing a lapel ribbon does as much as a magnetic ribbon. Nothing.

March 12, 2008  10:09 AM ET

I am not a Duke or a coach K fan (although I think he is one h*ll of a coach), but this is stupid.

March 12, 2008  10:23 AM ET

i can see where they are coming with it...but i think it has more to it than it should have because...its just a damn ribbon...we're all saddened by the loss of the UNC body president ....it IS such a tragedy....but i think as a head coach knowing this is going to be the most televised thing in america that particular moment in the sports world....

why didnt you have a ribbon...ur the head coach of the opposing team...that is sorta disrespectful...

and is it just me or does EVERY SINGLE press conference wehther it be about the team, the playbook, the players, or management...or even in tragedy....they never sond any different...where did the pesonality go?? i miss bobby knight

March 12, 2008  10:24 AM ET

I think George Carlin said it best...

"I don't believe in ribbons.. I leave ribbons to the ribbons minded."

Total agreement, ribbons are getting rediculous, they don't prove that one person cares more than anyone else. I can put 10 ribbons on my jacket, doesn't mean I support or believe in any of the causes.

Wasn't there a Seinfeld too where Kramer got attacked for not wearing a ribbon while he was marching in the parade for the cause?

March 12, 2008  10:32 AM ET

People care to much about what the other person is doing or how they feel. Enough.

The warden...your an ignorant classless assho!e. For anyone to say they wish the school burns down is a selfish moron. You dislike a few members of the teaching community, and the people who run it, so lets have innocent people die? You make absolutley no sense, and to even bother typing what u did is IGNORANT.

Now onto the topic..Coach K might not have worn the ribbon, but if the story holds true that he placed a phone call, and was the person who said lets have a handshake at midcourt..its ok with me. Coach K is 1 of the leaders for the Jimmy V foundation, and is a public figure, not to mention the Olympic coach..etc.... He does things right unlike other schools with drama!

March 12, 2008  11:40 AM ET

Well i once wished for the Gators football stadium to burn to the ground, then thought about it rationally...

If that happened there is no doubt in my mind they would get mega support from alums, community and fans and build a monstrous overcompensating stadium that may rival any stadium in the country...so im happy right where theyre at, a urine stained cesspool that mirrors a parking garage.

And on this story, meh, the ribbon thing is dumb, never thought I'd say this but good on you coach k

March 12, 2008  11:47 AM ET

Duke-haters are like Yankee-haters -- there's always something. CoachK and Duke went to great lengths to recognize the tragic death of that young woman -- but small minded jealous fans and writers will always find something to criticize about a winning program. The Duke basketball program has been among the country's finest for many, many years, and it will continue to be, notwithstanding the naysayers and critics who fail to appreciate team play and college graduation.

March 12, 2008  11:51 AM ET

As a life long UNC fan I think this is a non-story and stupid. By definition I hate Duke and Coach K annoys me to no end however, he is by all accounts a stand-up guy and doesn't need a stupid ribbon to show compassion. It sounds like he did all the right things as usual and I agree with his sentiment, "shame on you," to whomever is responsible for this story. In fact, making this a story is more disrespectful to the memory of this young lady than someone not wearing a stupid ribbon. Let's put this crap aside and lace 'em up. Tomorrow the ACC tournament begins and I would be willing to bet that Eve Carson would be all about her classmates healing the hurt by cheering the Heels!
Rest in Peace Eve, you have permanent court side seats now!
