Garnett backs Pierce for MVP

Celtics forward Kevin Garnett was viewed by many as the leading candidate to be NBA MVP prior to the abdominal injury that caused him to miss nine games. But if the 2004 NBA MVP had a vote, it would go to Garnett's teammate, Paul Pierce. "I got Paul for MVP this year," said Garnett, who won the award four years ago with Minnesota. "He does a lot of things, just little small things that people don't see. There are only three people I like to watch on offense, and he's one of them, man. He makes scoring look easy. He has an uncanny confidence about him that I love, cockiness and self-assurance.

well it appears paul pierce's quota for this years MVP voting has been met.....

March 12, 2008  08:46 AM ET

Garnett may win MVP, but there is no way that Pierce will win it.

March 12, 2008  08:54 AM ET

That's what I love about KG, he just wants the ring, could care about anything less. But KG is really their MVP and not Pierce, Garnet does every little thing imaginable, plus basically coach and control the young guys, just ask Perkins that from last week.

I don't like KG that much, but Paul Pierce is right when he said, "He does a lot of things, just little small things that people don't see." You don't see how his defensive and offensive presence affects the game in his statistics sheet. You have to look at the fact the team is the best in the NBA at holding opponents to the lowest points per game. On offense, he is unselfish, even as a Wolf he didn't have to take the last shot to win the game, he frequently opted for the assist instead of the game winner.

Please. With the way that they've been playing, MVP candidates this year are Kobe Bryant or Lebron James.

March 12, 2008  09:46 AM ET

I don't like the MVP award that much but because they typically award the MVP to winning teams (which I disagree with). So I doubt Lebron James will will because the team is .578

I think the players most likely to win are Chris Paul, Kobe Bryant, and Kevin Garnett.

March 12, 2008  09:48 AM ET

I take it back, Kobe or Garnett are most likely to win it (I took out CP3)

March 12, 2008  09:49 AM ET

Paul Pierce???? Are you friggin' kidding me? Paul Pierce has as much chance to win the MVP as I have of wining the mega millions. He shouldn't even be in the same conversation as Kobe, Lebron and Chris Paul.

Get outta here KG, you're losing it already and you just got to Boston.

March 12, 2008  09:52 AM ET

KG is just backing up his teammate.......nothing wrong with that.

Last time I checked .578 is a winning record.

March 12, 2008  10:18 AM ET

Garnett is also backing Mike Huckabee for the Democratic Nomination for President (yes, I intentionally put him in the Dem Party to illustrate how ridiculous Garnett is being).

no really? I mean like not hovering around 50% Like actually being at the top of the conference

March 12, 2008  10:24 AM ET

I actually misread title, I thought it was Pierce backing KG because that would make a lot more sense. But I still believe KG or Kobe will win because those MVP voters will argue the fact the team is winning and these are two very athletic players (but again I still want to point out that I disagree with a player getting the MVP based on the teams success).

March 12, 2008  10:41 AM ET

Man, Garnett must be two sandwiches short of a picnic. Why not just say Sam Cassell should be the MVP. He loved that cat in Minny too no?

March 12, 2008  10:42 AM ET

No kidding. Lebron wouldn't even make it to the playoffs in the west. They would be 10th??? I don't understand how they want to give it to him so bad. Wasn't the argument last year and the year before about Kobe not being on a top team and you can't give it to a player on a mediocre team no matter how many points they score. Let alone he is only 4th in the leastern conference. I mean what are they like 10 games back of detroit? If you don't give it to Kobe or even Duncan then it has to go to Garnett as you can see what he has done for that team. Ray Allen is ok and Paul Pierce is ok and without garnett they would have only been ok.

without KG they still would have had telfair (who does not suck anymore) green (who they arguably could have traded for snyder and a second round pick) gomes (who is is underated), Jefferson (who is a top PF), and an expiring contract....not to mention minnesotas first round draft pick

March 12, 2008  10:56 AM ET

How cute.

March 12, 2008  11:05 AM ET

Its obvious 95% of you dont know a thing about BBall. Paul Pierce is a beast he can score 30 or 35 a night. Hes no Kobe but he is a monster. Ill say Kobe for MVP but Garnett is right Pierce is the MVP of the Celtics.

March 12, 2008  11:09 AM ET

Wow what a bunch of clowns...SFPFC how many comments on this topic do you need?

1st off KG probably wont win the MVP since he missed 3 weeks, but he should and better be the Defensive MVP. Paul Pierce is probably the 12th best player this year for MVP, so there's a .01% he wins it...we know he wont. KG likes to show support for his boys, and why not...better then being like Chad Johnson and being a "ME " person...we have enough of them goof's in the world of sports...its about time we actually have a guy divoted to WIN no matter what!

Big skin....Pierce is NOT the Mvp of the Celtics im sorry to say..ive watched every game and without KG on defense this team would have around 30 wins. Looking at the 6-9th seed right now...nothing more, nothing less.
