The Patriots are prepared to part ways with wide receiver Troy Brown, as the team is not planning to offer its all-time leader in receptions a contract for the 2008 season. According to a source with knowledge of the situation, out of courtesy to Brown, the Patriots recently informed the 15-year veteran, who is a free agent, that he was not in their immediate plans and that if he was interested in returning for a 16th NFL season he was free to field offers from other teams.

Honestly, I didn't know he was still with the Pats.

You are used and you are dumped. Remember that when you read about the high salaries.

This isnt a surprise. I wish he would retire though. His number will be retired by the Pats.. Noone really expected Troy would be back next season.

March 13, 2008  07:52 AM ET

I agree, retirement would be best.
He didn't play that much last season.
Catching on kick off returns was like
a last hurrah for a player who
contributed so much to the team.
It's time to say goodbye.

be a good organization and give the guy a coaching job or something. Dont just kick him to the curb.

March 13, 2008  08:10 AM ET

We tend to forget that sports are a buisness first and foremost, always have been and always will be, I agree he should retire and go out on a high note and who knows maybe the Pats asked him to do just that but he didn't want to and no team has any obligation to retain somone for sentimental reasons, face it these guys are employees and paid very well for it.

OMG. I guess Pats fans are giving up on the '08 season.

Troy Brown was the greatest example of a complete athlete and football player ever. A great individual who was all about the TEAM concept. A coach couldn't ask for a better example of a what a player should be.

He will be missed.

Morning one and all

March 13, 2008  08:34 AM ET

I really liked Troy a lot. I always wished he'd followed Curtis Martin to the Jets. Definitely a class act.

March 13, 2008  09:11 AM ET

They didn't give up on him at all. They were extremely loyal to him this past season, giving him opportunities to play when, frankly, it wouldn't have been deserved if not for the fifteen great years he played prior.

And they didn't dump him to the curb. He was hanging on too long and they gave him an opportunity as early as possible to latch on with another team.

Troy is a class act and I wish him all the best.

This knucklehead was on here yesterday trying to instigate things.....How about something constructive Cowboy....? Maybe a reason why your team can't win a playoff game and why they are all defecting to the Fins. Have a nice day.

March 13, 2008  09:32 AM ET

And don't make his dismissal so public. Make it look like he chose to retire, show him some love.

March 13, 2008  09:58 AM ET

He should retire rather than go away and play a season somewhere else.

March 13, 2008  10:10 AM ET

What's most surprising here is that coming off that dismal Superbowl and stuck in the middle of a disastrous public relations stinkhole they cut loose a guy that carries one of the highest reputations for personal and professional integrity and class as they have ever had in their organization.

Sure, maybe Troy has hung on too long in terms of playing but there are times that the intangibles should be looked at. A team that looks like they got a big skidmark in their shorts should think long and hard before telling one of their loyalest players to start sending out resumes....

like the last 3 words............ALL THEIR TITLES.....jealousy breeds contempt.

March 13, 2008  11:02 AM ET

Maybe they can give him a job in the video taping department. I heard there was an opening

This guy was a STUD for them over the years, but ya gotta move on.
