Yankees-Rays feud boils over
Two of his players and two of his coaches were ejected Wednesday, but Yankees Manager Joe Girardi insisted his team had not been looking for a fight with the Rays. Shelley Duncan did not injure Akinori Iwamura with a spikes-high slide at second base Wednesday, but to Rays Manager Joe Maddon, that was beside the point. Maddon saw malicious intent from Duncan, who gave Iwamura a small cut on his knee. "In Tampa, that play you saw was a good, hard baseball play," Maddon said, referring to the play that injured Yankees catcher Francisco Cervelli. "What you saw today was the definition of a dirty play. There's no room for that in our game. It's contemptible. It's wrong. It's borderline criminal. I can't believe they did that."

Joe maddon the all knowing mind reader of baseball players intentions. A hard slide into second, Ty cobb would have been proud. Slide hard into second base? Really? Happens all the time. You know like third baseman coming over to the opposing dug out for a pop up? Keep coming, keep coming, you got plenty of room, whoops, my bad. Nothing unusual. But outfielder running in from the outfield to chop block a base runner from behind? Obviously flagrant. It will be interesting to see how the the fines and suspensions will handed out in this case.

Shelley Duncan is the next classless disrespectful punk in baseball who will always get a free pass some seem to get while others who act the same (Lastings Milledge comes to mind) get abused by the masses. Read my blog post to further see how I feel about the Yankees - http://www.fannation.com/blogs/post/163996

I won't make the comments I would like to make because it would be way to biased against the Yankees. I will say this however. This picture isn't as revealing as the picture in CNN.SI where his foot is almost firmly planted in the crotch IWAMURA. Having played SS for over 25 years and taken many double play balls, if this would have happened to me the right fielder wouldn't have had a chance to get to Duncan because I would have drilled Duncan right in the face with the ball and never would have made the throw to first base. What a punk. I hope first time up the next time they play whomever is pitching for the Rays drills this p.o.s. right in the head.

gotta agree with Tribe13 on this one; they showed the replay on several different networks yesterday and Duncan was clearly trying to injure Iwamura. playing hard is one thing; trying to inflict injury is quite another. come on guys, it's spring training.....save all that energy for something important.....like regular season games. granted, the RF should not have done what he did either, but it's a bad situation all the way around anyway.

Who the hell is Shelly Duncan?

The Yankees catcher asked for the collision by blocking the plate... what else was the baserunner supposed to do? Politely ask him to step aside? Now the retribution was just petty and dirty... the hit batsman should have been enough to get their point across and even things out.. Now Duncan acts this way and makes the situation worse so the Rays will feel compelled to respond next time.

Playing hard and playing to injure someone is completely different.

I'm glad Shelly did what he did. The Rays said it was okay when one of their guys breaks a catcher's wrist, but now they whine over a hard slide? Give me a break. If you want to play clean, then play clean, but if you want to play hardball, then play it and accept that it goes both ways.

He didn't run into the catcher with the intent to injure, this moron from the yanks did.

Wait a minute, I thought that was how the game was played? Rough and tumble. What you mean ya'll didn't expect anyone to retaliate on the Yanks for what happened to Cervelli? Now if the Yanks didn't retaliate, ya'll would be calling them a bunch of chicken ****. right? Ya can't have it both ways. If you want the players to take care of bsuiness on the field then let it be. If you want a Little League game played with everyone getting their chance to play and no contact at any base including running over the catcher at home, (which btw I supported), then so be it. But the way the game is played in the Majors is expect **** to happen when a player on one team, (whether by accident or by design) gets hurt. It is the unwritten code in the game. It is how things get taken care of . I think maybe it's the Rays turn to over-react to the sitatuion. Criminal??? Criminal is when some one uses PEDs to take another worthy player's job and every one in the game turns the other way and allows the legitimate player to be cheated out of his job and lose his livelihood. Now that is frucking criminal.
All of this extracurricular activity is part of baseball. I predict by the next game it will all have blown over and we will see a good "clean" game. :D
PS i think this is frucking hilarious. All you haters get your chance on the bully pulpit now.

Catchers know when they block the plate they run the risk of getting run over. When a middle infielder takes a double play the runner, once he knows he's out, is supposed to give way for the play to continue. According to reports he slid LATE and HIGH. That't cheap and someone needs to take him behind the dugout and one way or another explain that to moron.

Careful there 4192....There's a fine line to hypocrisy. I see a little too much support for a guy in your comments because he's wearing pinstripes. You and I get along fine considering who our favorite teams are, and I could be wrong, but you wouldn't be so supportive of what happened if this was a situation between the Rays and Sox would you?

Exactly, when someone runs into the catcher, the intent is to knock the ball out, NOT injure him. This nobody on the Yanks intent was to injure. That's the thing that is wrong with it.
