Shanahan fires Broncos GM

After the Broncos missed the NFL playoffs the last two seasons, relationships became strained on the top floor offices at Dove Valley. That strain reached its breaking point Wednesday night when coach Mike Shanahan announced general manager Ted Sundquist "is no longer with the team, effective immediately." The timing of the announcement -- a period between NFL free agency and its draft -- leaves little doubt Shanahan and Sundquist had reached irreconcilable differences. Top-level executive shake-ups almost always happen either directly after the playing season, or after the draft. Sundquist had spent 16 years with the Broncos, the first 10 in the college scouting department, and the last six as their GM.

wait, Im confused.. how does a coach fire a GM ? Shouldnt that work the other way around?

March 13, 2008  07:43 AM ET

so does that mean Shanahan is doing both jobs then? If he can fire his boss, he MUST be the new GM, at least for now, right? Or maybe he's going to get out of coaching altogether and just be GM? OR like Holmgren in Seattle, do both. Tough call. Got some work to do to make this team one of the best again, that's for sure

Maybe he's putting John in as GM

March 13, 2008  08:12 AM ET

keeping their players out of jail cells would be a good place to start

March 13, 2008  08:29 AM ET

Every team has trouble makers, ours just got caught. Some whole teams should be in jail

March 13, 2008  09:06 AM ET

My guess is the coach is the coach/v.p.

March 13, 2008  09:14 AM ET

I don't know if this was a very smrt move Ted has put out some pretty good teams for Schanhan but we will see what happens.

March 13, 2008  09:28 AM ET

I guess Shanahan is the Man in Denver. Does this mean that John Elway can fire Shanahan?

March 13, 2008  09:33 AM ET

Shanahan is the one who should be fired if they think it is bad players they have assembled. You know he had a hand and the final say in every draft, trade and free agent signing. He is just diverting the focus from himself. No way can it be lusey assistants or mediocre head coaching that makes the team a so so NFLclub???? The owner should call in Shanahan and say " Your Fired". Better yet, have Donald Trump do it on National TV...You can bet it was the Head Coach who wanted Plummer, and that is where it all started to go downhill for the Broncos. Never like Shanahan anyways, always thought he was a self absorbed jerk.

March 13, 2008  09:53 AM ET

wow. i think ted has done a pretty good job. this is really interesting.

i think shanahan is also the president? and thats why he has the power to fire ted.

well maybe he should move into the pres/gm job and find a new coach. it might be time.

March 13, 2008  09:59 AM ET

Well, he did bring in Keary Colbert...that's grounds enough for termination.

March 13, 2008  10:03 AM ET

With all of the deals between the two teams, maybe the Lions could trade Millen to the Broncos for some old socks.

March 13, 2008  10:11 AM ET

coach fires GM? does he have the authority?

March 13, 2008  10:31 AM ET

FIRE YOURSELF MIKE AND MAYBE YOU ALL CAN WIN OR GO TO THE PLAYOFFS!

March 13, 2008  10:31 AM ET

I liek the comments by 50YearFan; but I am a RAIDERS fan and I am biased.

March 13, 2008  10:46 AM ET

If Elway can fire Shanahan, does that mean Joe Montana can fire God?
