Mixed reviews on Olson return

Will Lute Olson be the same coach whose teams averaged better than 26 wins over an 18-year span through 2005? Or will he be the coach whose 2006 and '07 squads lost a combined 24 games -- the most over a two-year stretch since he took over the program? There have been recruiting mistakes, chemistry and discipline issues, and the defense became soft enough that Olson hired Kevin O'Neill to come in and tighten the bolts. When Olson needed to step away, O'Neill was handed the reins and eventually retooled the team's approach. He did it partly because a coach teaches what he knows, and he did it partly out of necessity because the program no longer has a bench overflowing with future NBA players. O'Neill, who earlier this season was announced as Olson's eventual successor, said Monday he has not made a decision about returning next year.

Lute Olson is an all time great, but it is time to let go! Let O'Neill take over and allow the program to be successful. Don't let your pride drive the program into the ground Lute!

One of the classiest coaches in the country... On top of a great coach... And mentor... But he definitely needs to walk away... And let the program he built... Make its way with the foundation he created... Good luck to him

Lute is Arizona. He belongs where he wants. How many times was Dean Smith told he should move on? If he wants to stay, and believes he can do the job, there shouldn't be any questions. He built the dynasty in the desert. He should be the one that decides when it's time to leave.

"He built the dynasty in the desert"

What dynasty? Being the best team in Arizona is not a dynasty. You could give him credit for the longest active tournament streak but cease and desist with the dynasty label.

he will be fine, the loss of his wife was huge and he has health problems, but NEVER say he can't coach.

just like Bobby Bowden and Joe Paterno in the College Football ranks
hard to know when it is time to go

Dynasty? ****!!!!!!! AZ is one of the MOST overrated programs in the country.....

If O'Neil doesn't work out I think that guy from the White Shadow is available.

Wow, all you little bitter spoiled brats. "Hating" on a man who has accomplished more than all of you put together. Not a dynasty? Second most players in the NBA. Longest active NCAA Tournament streak. Four Final fours. Something like 80 weeks at #1. "Step down, Lute! Give it up old man!" You idiots! Have you no respect for greatness? Arizona won 2 games the year before he took over. They've average 25 since. There is no Arizona without him. Hey, video-heads, does this mean anything to you? You're a bunch of kiddies who don't even play, so don't for a second believe you know what's best for Arizona basketball. You're all part of the worst generation the country will ever see. Guys like Lute will be heroes decades from now when you are all wondering, what happened to our country? I'll tell you what: arrogant little punks with entitlement issue and no respect for greatness or history is what happened. Good luck!

Sicily!
Thank you so much, couldn't have put it better myself. These punks are either Duke or Lobo fans.

March 15, 2008  04:44 PM ET

yes sicily you are perfect with that one. i live in tucson and go to the u of a and know exactly what arizona was before him and what hes turned them into. arizona is not overrated, theres just stupid people who live back east and on the west coast who only know duke, n.c., and maybe ohio state. they know nothing about basketball out here. olson is arizona and always will be. can anyone name the next 3 coaches after wooden? no. why? cause wooden is ucla. arizona was never a dynasty, ill say that, but over the last 10 years we are in the top 5. period. arizona was never overrated and will always be an elite squad.

sorry thats supposed to say east coast

I think Olson wants to go out on his own terms, and not with taking a leave of absence and forced into retirement. In my opinion, he has that right because he built the program from literally nothing. I will admit to some slippage, but hopefully our recruiting will provide a better bench, and people will stop leaving after one year (whether they jump to the pros or transfer) JP Prince is now a starter, I think @ Tennessee and that one Dude Muelbach is either a starter or key reserve for Texas A & M.

Those saying AriZona is overrated: Men Lie, Women Lie, Numbers Don't!
23 straight years in the tourney
20 straight years of 20 plus wins
4 final fours
Several Elite 8's & Sweet 16's (don't have #'s off top of my head)
1 National Championship (1997)
1 National Runner Up (2001)
20 plus 1st round draft picks on par with North Carolina over the past 10-15 yrs.

I met Lute Olson back in the early 90's at a tournament for high school players in Las Vegas. A gentleman first class and his records speak for themselves. However like myself we all get OLD and time to take a back seat to the future !!!
