Mariners give up on Ramirez

No longer will Horacio Ramirez be the brunt of jokes by Mariners fans, at least not while he's still around. It has been a frustrating 12 months for the left-hander, forever to be remembered in Seattle as the forgettable clunker obtained from the Atlanta Braves for prime reliever Rafael Soriano. The deal hurt the Mariners on multiple fronts, as Ramirez's abbreviated outings helped decimate Seattle's bullpen last season while Soriano -- now Atlanta's closer -- was no longer around to bail out overworked relievers. Considering the Mariners stayed in playoff contention until early September, it's not a stretch to suggest the Ramirez deal is what cost the team its postseason shot. The man who brokered that trade, general manager Bill Bavasi, will have to pay only one-sixth of Ramirez's salary -- some $460,000 -- because he cut him loose by Wednesday's early deadline.

Chuck James isnt all that bad, did he come up through Atlanta?

March 13, 2008  11:29 AM ET

Chuck James is STILL IN ATLANTA! The Braves have always had a way to make garbage Pitchers look good, then trade them before people realize that the guy isn't that great.

March 13, 2008  12:17 PM ET

that is why the ATl trades them ......... we traded away Ramirez, OPerez to Dodgers for Sheffield, DMoss for ROrtiz, Jschmidt for DNeagle, DMeyer for THudson, several for Mtexeria. Either we are jsut very good traders of our talent or the teams we trade them too dont know what they are doing. Have to go with the first since we won 14 of last 16 NL East titles.

Lou Pinella always said he'd never trade for Atlanta pitching.

March 13, 2008  12:45 PM ET

Just Sweet Lou's personal take.

I've never seen such a kick in the nuts article about one guy before. He ruined their season, invented cancer and I belive he shoved baby Jessica in that well. What a bad guy.

If Sweet Lou gives his stamp of approval, I'll buy it. Of course, I was still a little skeptical when he sold me that prime vacation spot in Arkansas, but I'm trying to be patient.

I hope to read that headline at the end of this season about another Ramirez - Manny. "Red Sox give up on Ramirez".

March 13, 2008  03:06 PM ET

Chuck James?? C'mon now... can anyone name a pitcher that actually lived up the the Atlanta hype??? I'm with the clown on this. People think all those cats are good in ATL but they not. The good ones are imported. Chuck James??? I'm not about to run out and buy a James jersey if I'm a braves fan....how's that.

Ever heard of Jason Schmidt. He came through the Braves.

ABOUT FREAKING TIME BAVASI !!!!! You finally admitted you were wrong about him !!!

. I was ASTOUNDED that he was still here at the beginning of spring training.
His last 10 games of last year against
TAM - 7.16
OAK - 6.80
NYY - 6.45
CLE - 6.55
TEX - 6.67
MIN - 7.15
MIN - 7.38
BAL - 7.12
BOS - 6.68
OAK - 6.52
How the hell do you win a game with a starter like THAT ?
I can't however pin the lost chance of a post season on just him. ALL the M's starting pitchers let the team down in the last month. They were working from the bull-pen from Sept. on. Horacio was just another loser by then.

adam wainwright......

Adam Wainwright??? The Cardinals certainly think highly of him
