Steelers, Big Ben talk big extension

07:06 AM ET 05.24 | The Steelers and Ben Roethlisberger's agent have had early talks about a contract extension for the young quarterback. While it appears nothing will be done this season, the machinery is gearing up for what should be the largest contract in the organization's history. Roethlisberger's next deal looms large over the organization already and might be one reason they won't or can't pay six-time Pro Bowl guard Alan Faneca enough to keep him here beyond the 2007 season.

He needs to stay because he is a awesome quarterback even though I am not a big fan of them team, I like the quarterback.

May 24, 2007  08:31 AM ET

what...are they gonna pay him Tom Brady or Peyton Manning money? he should be compensated as a 'middle of the pack' QB at best.

May 24, 2007  08:45 AM ET

No all QBs should be payed the same amount.

May 24, 2007  08:55 AM ET

actually, he should be kicking back some of that loot he stole from the steelers organization (motorcycle + no helmet = some guy afraid to get hit). He had a horrible season last year after that accident, probably resulting in a couple extra losses.

He owe's it to the steelers to show them this season what he can do before they committ their future and big dollars to him after that incident.

May 24, 2007  08:58 AM ET

Agreed

May 24, 2007  09:31 AM ET

Generally top QB's have a higher QB rating than 20 in the Superbowl.

Big Ben is a product of the system

May 24, 2007  09:33 AM ET

What have you done for me lately? And he hasn't done much. If he wants the big pay day he better sign now. Because he is a middle of the pack Quarterback who will do enough not to lose a game. But not take a team on his shoulder pads and lead them to victory.

May 24, 2007  09:33 AM ET

If Big Ben doesn't stay with the Steelers then there are bound to be another team out there who wants a young and, right now, healthy QB. The Steelers really owe a big contract to Big Ben. He made history in 2004-2005 when he was the youngest QB ever to win a Super Bowl. Big Ben has really came back since the motercycle accident,I think. So the Steelers 2006-2007 season sucked.

Ever wonder what the take is on a home game for the Steelers? The few games I've been to have been sold out, with long lines in at all the concession stands and the games seen on TV appear to be the same. Then you have the price of a beer or a NFL jersey and all I can say is wow.

What is the player cost to the Steelers? What is the Rooneys' profit margin? Isn't the addition of another ring worth more, financially than years of waisted seasons with only the Rooneys' adding pennies to their savings account.?

Not that I think Ben is worth Brady type money but Fanica is worth more than a release slip!

he deserves a matt schaub deal, 6-49 mil

May 24, 2007  09:37 AM ET

Ben is the second coming of Bubby Brister

May 24, 2007  09:44 AM ET

Its never to early to drop a "bubby brister"

May 24, 2007  09:45 AM ET

It is always to early lol jk

May 24, 2007  09:49 AM ET

Middle of the pack QB? Interesting. He has one bad year and everybody is throwing eggs at him. The man came in his first year at 15-1. Next year he goes and wins the Super Bowl. Fairweather fans til the end. Pay an appreciative team player, unlike Mr. Whiney **** Baby Faneca. You know the one who had a problem with Ben in the first place, saying he didn't want a young kid playing on his team? Who got Faneca a ring before? Nobody. Since the Pro Bowl keeps snubbing him, the organization can compensate him monitarily.

May 24, 2007  09:56 AM ET

no actually what concerns me is that his passing attempts have gone up, yet his percentage, and QB rating have gone down

May 24, 2007  09:58 AM ET

Lasota made an interesting comment that I would like to pick up on. Lasota said that all QB's should be paid the same amount.

Now, what would happen if all contracts were built upon a base salary for that players position? Increases could be offered for years of service. Bonuses given for being chosen to the Pro-Bowl, All-Pro, MVP of the league, Super Bowl MVP, etc....However, bonuses cannot exceed 10% of the players regular compensation value.

One of the things I think it would do is increase player, and thus fan loyalty. It would end player hold-outs. It would take a lot away from agents.
I think, however, it should be ruled that a player cannot be cut from the team for salary cap reasons. In fact, I think this proposal would make salary caps irrelevant. What do the rest of you think?

Have fun trying to get the players association to sign off on that one

May 24, 2007  10:03 AM ET

He had his 15 minutes of fame

May 24, 2007  10:08 AM ET

Can someone tell me why he deserves that kind of money? He may no longer be the same QB he was before the accident. He has just as much as prove unfortunately as McNabb

May 24, 2007  10:12 AM ET

Mr. Brocaw,
I'm not talking about chump change for contracts. I believe basic compensation for a punter, for instance should be $1,000,000 a year. You increase the basic by the importance of the position on the field.

Secondly, I could care less about the players association. Why do men who play a GAME deserve a union, when they are highly compensated?

Third, what I would really like to see, if I were declared most benevolent dictator of the U.S. is an complete outlawing of professional sports. No more 7 figure contracts for sports figures until the day that teachers, soldiers, police, firefighters, nurses, etc...are paid $1,000,000 a year.
