NFL: Conduct policy working

Player behavior was the NFL's hot topic a year ago as Commissioner Roger Goodell pieced together a strengthened personal conduct policy and big suspensions for Pacman Jones, Chris Henry and Tank Johnson were on the horizon. A year later the league says the crackdown has had the desired effect of serving as a deterrent, plus there's been a trickledown to college football. Coaches, current players and this year's draft prospects seem to agree.

HA! Wanna bet?????

March 14, 2008  08:10 AM ET

ummm.....yeah right. over/under on pacman messing up is 2-1/2 months after reinstatement he will screw up. we will also have a new crop of hurricane players running rampid in the league. what about goodell's destruction of evidence. who is keeping an eye on him?

March 14, 2008  08:18 AM ET

Whether everybody is behaving better or just getting better at covering it up, at least there haven't been any high-profile arrests in the league for awhile. I'd like to think that everybody has gotten the message.

Of course, everybody is now focusing on Spygate so maybe it's just not getting reported.

I'll give Goodell some credit, though. The league really had to crack down on player conduct. It was, at least perceived to be, getting completely out of control.

I fully expect Pacman, Tank, and Chris Henry to stay out of trouble now. If nothing else, the next time WILL BE the last time! If any of them screw up again then the only way that they're getting in an NFL jersey is if they buy one at Sports Authority.

Vaughn9, "...new crop of hurricane players running rampid in the league"????

Seriously, have you seen 'the U' lately?

"Crop" is being way too generous.

PacMan Jones - West Virgina
Tank Johnson - Washington
Mike Vick - Virgina Tech
Chris Henry - Arizona

not a Hurricane in the bunch

The U players have been preety good...they just don't like practicing with their teams!

What is forgotten is the "in association with" part of the policy. Good Mormon Andy Reid gets the free pass for his kid. Under the rules we should have seen some action.

March 14, 2008  10:22 AM ET

Probably more due to the distractions of roids in baseball and basketbal season than a true change in football player behavior.

So now Goodell is such an egomaniac to think that his legacy is trickling?

March 14, 2008  01:27 PM ET

Now be careful, If you are going to say what you are " doing " is working and making it better, then you are also saying it is YOUR fault that all the stuff was happening before....Oh, and about all that steroid stuff????

March 14, 2008  03:12 PM ET

Players just learned how to run, a la Lance Briggs and Channing Crowder.

Didn't some patriot players get busted? I know one got caught with cash and weed.

March 14, 2008  03:39 PM ET

Yeah, he also suspended Odell Thurman for TWO YEAR for 1 DUI. TWO YEARS.....Jason Allen has had multiple DUI's and hasn't even been suspended for 1. Though I admit, I like what what he is doing, but that was taking it too far in my opinion. If PacMan is reinstated this season I am going to be REALLY upset!

March 14, 2008  03:40 PM ET

Looks like West Virginia is the new "U"

March 14, 2008  04:07 PM ET

A desired effect indeed. We need more tanks.

March 14, 2008  04:15 PM ET

except the pot arrests
-Loki-

In this day and age that is only important to the naive.

And Andy Reid should not beheld accountable for his kids any more than Tony Dungy is responsible for his son's tragic end. Kids make their own choices.

March 14, 2008  05:41 PM ET

Whatever. Once a criminal, always a criminal. The NFL is full of them. Most have not been caught yet. Give it time and they will get caught.

March 14, 2008  07:23 PM ET

this is short term...it's just a matter of time before someone else gets CAUGHT. he has just driven the bad behavior underground for awhile. Yea... everyones cleaning everything up... that is NOT the thug nation way.

March 14, 2008  07:27 PM ET

bye the way,
the U was only bold when they were winning, not getting their lunch force fed to them by C.F.U.
lil' 8itches !

What do you notice about good teams. The Colts, the Patriots (for the most part-besides Moss, Faulk, etc.), the Giants, and the Packers (besides Koren Robinson) all don't have players with rough pasts. They keep it clean for the most part, and they win. The thug teams can't win i.e. Cincinnati and Carolina.
