Firestone not interested in NASCAR

During a lengthy, unflattering critique of the tires that Goodyear supplied the drivers at Atlanta Motor Speedway, Tony Stewart said that other tire companies would do a better job in NASCAR. While Stewart really was not calling for a tire war, his words surely hit a nerve in Daytona Beach and Akron, Ohio, cities where NASCAR and Goodyear have their headquarters. That's because for racing series and tire companies, tire wars are often viewed as a potential Armageddon. For the time being, Firestone, the American company that is probably best suited to go after Goodyear's contract when it expires, is not interested in approaching NASCAR.

Firestone is owned by Bridgestone and is Japanese. Has been for a long time. Nice job of research there.

No kidding. Whose the knee-jerk journalist than typed this drivel out? I mean all they gotta do is read my previous posts if they need to do research. I pointed out that Firestone is Bridgestone and Uniroyal-goodrich is Michelin. Somehow it escaped them. A majority of the tires sold in America are branded tires anyhow. ( the name companies simply take orders from big stores to brand thier tires with whatever their store wants to name the product. That and the OE market is where the competition is. Winning a tire war in Nascar does nothing compared with competitive pricing and marketing.
Besides goodyear is probably not the first tire that I would buy. They are privey and they don't look all that great...probably work fine though. I own a 4x4 and race Motocross, so I am a BFG (michelin) on my truck and Michelin s-12's on my bike.

When Goodyears' contract expires we'll see what happens then. But for now talk is cheap.

March 14, 2008  09:48 AM ET

I buy the knock off BFG's from Pepboys. They last forever, adn give me a great ride, and a great price. Screw the big names.

Just to clarify, although Bridgestone does wholly own Firestone, the company's North American operations are based in Nashville (not Japan) and they kind of do operate with some independence. As an example, Firestone/Bridgestone USA entered into IndyCar racing in 1995. But Bridgestone Japan didn't enter Formula 1 until 1997, two years later.

Funny stickcar fan. Put donuts or skis on the cars for all I care.

Like Goodyear is clean....in the early nineties they closed plants and fired 13,000 workers ....where did they start making the tires those guys made? They also own Dunlop and they make all those tires in Japan. Get used to it, it's the way of the world and you can't change it.

I use Cooper Tires and I don't know who the he// makes them.

Hi Sly!!!

March 14, 2008  01:16 PM ET

I think the Japs should make a Nascar tire, I'm sure they could do better than us.

March 14, 2008  02:53 PM ET

Doesn't seem that you get much good press out of supplying the tires.

March 14, 2008  03:04 PM ET

Jr. #88 Fan Hi Kid good posts lately, your getting better.= LOL

HI JAZ

March 14, 2008  03:09 PM ET

Lets see Goodyear back out of their agreement with NASCAR. No body else seems to want to make tires for NASCAR. I wonder how well Tony Stewart can race on rims.

March 14, 2008  03:10 PM ET

Sly- I'm trying~~~~

GOOD

March 14, 2008  03:34 PM ET

TCopelin = Have no fear If Goodyear backed out, nothing would stop
the Competitors from lining up for a chance at Nascars $$$$$$$$$$$

March 14, 2008  04:18 PM ET

If I understand my history correctly, did we not help Japan get back on their feet even after we bombed a couple of their cities to Hell? Someone let me know. All of this nation-bashing is best left for the political blogs. Let us just go racing!

March 14, 2008  04:45 PM ET

So, if NASCAR used Firestone tires, would the cars flip over on turns? Just asking.....
