Rays: Duncan actions 'borderline criminal'
Shelley Duncan says he still doesn't know why the Rays were so upset about his slide into second baseman Akinori Iwamura, a spikes-up effort that caused both benches to empty Wednesday. After seeing replays of his slide a couple of times on SportsCenter, Duncan -- who had said he was trying to knock the ball out of Iwamura's glove -- said he still doesn't think it was a dirty play. Rays manager Joe Maddon disagreed, calling Duncan's actions "borderline criminal."

He should admit to what it was - attempted payback. The difference is, running into the catcher has always been accepted as a clean play, and going spikes up has always been seen as a dirty play.

What he really meant was that when any other player does that, it's called playing hard. When a Yankee does it, it's "criminal."

Again, this is so very asinine. Criminal is when a PED infested player takes a real job/position away from another hard working drug free player, deprives that person of a livlihood, and baseball turns its collective eyes away from that reality and shuts its mouth from speaking of that reality.
Regardless of what others say or may think I do not think Duncan went into second with the intent to cause severe, grevious or deadly harm to any player. He probably did go into second with the express thought of sending a retalitory message and his good intentions went so very wrong. His method of "retribution" was ill advised and misplaced and he is paying the penalty, (or wil pay the penalty soon) for his lack of good judgement.
To see this occurence as criminal is really pushing the issue, (whats next? Legal action? please....), and making Maddon, et. al., look more the asses than anything in my opinion. Time to let this die down. Take what ever punishments are deemed proper by MLB, and that includes Gomes, too, for his own personal stupidity and move on. There is baseball to play.

Obviously fannation and most sports venues and ya'll. What usually draws the most attention on these threads? Something with Yankees in it. It is the team America either loves or loves to hate. The Yankees perform a greater good for all of baseball. :D

Obviously, the "borderline criminal" comment was hyperbole, and shouldn't be taken literally. I think what makes this whole thing ridiculous is when somebody clearly is looking for payback, then denies it and says they were just playing hard.
4192jc has it right, this guy got a wrong-headed notion about "defending" his teammates, and made a bush-league play.

I agree, the borderline criminal part is a little much, but running over a catcher and sliding spikes high into somesones goods are completely different things. One is expected and the other isn't. Simple as that. I do agree, that is was a nobody on the Yankess that is the reason this is getting so much press. If this was someone on the Royals, no one would care.

Can some one please give me the address for The Tampa Bay Devil Rays, or just Rays, or The Skates, who ever they call themselves now. How about The Tampa Bay Occupiers of Last Place Every Season. But anyway, I want to send them some neccessaties like tissues, a shoulder to cry on, a quarter to call someone who even cares what they think. Elliot Johnson was out of line on Saturday and Shelly Duncan was out of line on Wednesday. MOVE ON.
P.S. Elliot Johnson's cheap shot caused a major injury and Shelly's play didn't cause a scratch.

Ty Cobb probably was a serial "felonist"
Ty Cobb:
*Sharpened his spikes to make infielders fear injury every time he took a base. Regularly threatened to injure infielders who tagged him out.
*Probably fixed games. Let off by the Commissioner when Cobb threatened to reveal further corruption.
*Kicked a hotel chambermaid in the stomach after she expressed disapproval at his use of the N-word.
*Had a long history of domestic violence.
*Refused to join his team on a Cuban tour, saying "****' place is in the stands or as clubhouse help."
*Fought a black groundskeeper during Spring Training over the condition of the practice field. Choked the groundkeepers wife when she intervened.
*Attacked a heckler who had lost his hands in an industrial accident. When spectators told him to stop because his target had no hands, Cobb said, "I don't care if he has no feet."
*Slapped a black elevator operator for being "uppity." When a black night watchman intervened, Cobb took out a knife and stabbed him.
*After Cobb's son failed out of Princeton, Cobb traveled to Princeton to beat and horsewhip his son.
*At the plate, arranged to fight an umpire under the grandstand after the game. Teammates broke up the fight after Cobb had knocked the umpire to the ground and began choking him. "I fight to kill" Cobb said at the time.

The Rays are a joke. They steamroll two catchers in one week of spring training and whine when they get some back? This team shouldn't have a manta ray on their shirt, they should have mouse ears.
