Steinbrenner: Papelbon's 'a mouse'

It's one thing for owners to have a little back-and-forth like John Henry and Hank Steinbrenner did recently in regard to Red Sox Nation vs. Yankees Universe. It's another for a young player to take a shot at an owner. That's what Jonathan Papelbon, 27, did in criticizing Steinbrenner. "I don't know if he's trying to stir things up or not," the Bosox closer said. "I sure as hell don't care, because he sure as hell hasn't stepped on a baseball field. He needs to just stick to pencil-pushing, I guess." Hammerin' Hank fired back yesterday. "Being insulted by Papelbon is like being attacked by a mouse," Steinbrenner told The Post.

Isn't it true that elephants are afraid of mice?
At least the cartoon elephants seem to be.
Watch out Hank.
Just saying.

Haha. This guy is insane. He will never make this rivalry dull. He speaks his mind. This will be interesting.

March 15, 2008  09:41 AM ET

Hank will keep things interesting for years to come. He certainly has big shoes to fill in that department.

And did anyone bother to read what Hank said, after he retotrted to Papelbon's commets, that he would still like to have Paplebon on his team because Papelbon is a really good player? this is some writer trying to make a mountain out of a mole hill.

ok i need to know , did paplebone have his mean scarey pitching face on when he said this?

March 15, 2008  11:33 AM ET

"Well your a mouse"Oh that's such a burn.Hanks worse than George.

March 15, 2008  12:10 PM ET

The only guy who talks more than Hank is Schilling.

March 15, 2008  12:33 PM ET

I'll hope it didn't take Francona and/or other veteran players long, to get to Papelbon and tell him not to get baited into these kind of things. Noones gonna tell Steinbrenner to shutup but someone ought to tell Pap to ****.

Rock on J-P! Just keep whizzing em by those pinstriped whiners in the Bronx!

What a strange comeback that was from Mr. Hankee.

Not only has Hank ticked off Red Sox Nation, now, it appears, he has chosen to insult mice all over the world with his putdown to JP.

C'mon Hank, smarten up! Is that the best ya got?

You do know that there are billions of mice on this planet, don't you? Do you really want to pick a fight with the mice population? I heard Mickey & Mighty are planning on picketing the Stadium on opening day. Time to go buy a cat, Hank!

March 15, 2008  02:11 PM ET

Hank Steinbrenner should ****. The game is played on the field, and settled there. Let the men play while the "boys" (this means you Hank) watch. You have ZERO baseball experience in any way. SHUT UP! SHUT UP! SHUT UP! SHUT UP! SHUT UP!

PS - "scarey" is spelled "scary" and yes he did have it on...

"Bye for now..."

PPS - A-Rod is Mr. April

Papelbon said in response to the mouse quote, "What ever dude. Obviously by that comment he's trying to start something. I'm not gonna get into it back and forth. I mean I said that because I honestly believe it. People nowadays, whether it be reporters, ESPN analysts, guys that don't play the game, don't understand what it's about. What the grind is about, what the clubhouse is like."

When told Steinbrenner said that Papelbon made it personal, the closer said, "I don't know why he would take it that way. I'm saying, guys that have never been on the field don't have the right to speak their mind about things that they don't know about. I'm not insulted by what he said."

Papelbon said he didn't want to do anything to escalate it any more and said he was even flattered by the fact Steinbrenner would go out of his way to single him out.

March 15, 2008  02:37 PM ET

Wow... Papelbon definitely came out looking a lot better than Hank. Did NOT expect Pap to come off looking smarter than someone. If I were a Yankee fan, I would be seriously concerned that my owner just lost a battle of wits to a great mind like Jon Papelbon!

Go Jonny, its your birthday...

I'm not a fan of either team, but Hank needs to shut his piehole. He needs to understand that his father earned any respect he had (that is questionable), and respect isn't handed down generation to generation. He is a nobody in baseball...shut up, win a championship, then talk. Not "my daddy won championships, RESPECT ME". Blabberbon...shut up too, rook. First contract talk talk talk, then garbage talk talk talk. The players and owners I respect most in this day are those that keep their mouths shut and let their ability/team speak for them.
