Athletics, Red Sox talking trade

Boston has considered moving center fielder Coco Crisp since the end of last season, and the A's have been linked to Crisp several times. Now, the teams are believed to be discussing Crisp again. If the Red Sox were to ask for any of the A's top prospects, Oakland would want someone like young center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury rather than Crisp.

The Red Sox think more of Crisp than other teams do. They might as well keep him for insurance purposes or try to dump him in August. He is not going to bring top young talent in return in a trade or a quality pitcher. Of course they are trying to move Crisp, they know his limitations and what he is.

Oh for crying out loud who aren't the RedSox talking to about a trade that concerns the cereal guy?

March 15, 2008  10:13 AM ET

The A's are a much better fit.

March 15, 2008  10:24 AM ET

The Sox know that Crisp is a $5 M/ yr lead weight. They're trying to move him for anything they can get.

50yr., I agree with you,he'd be a good insurance guy and we also would do better at trading deadline time if it came to that. Coco still a great defensive outfielder.

I love Ellsbury, but I don't know about 5-tool. I don't think he'll hit more than 12-15 HRs.

March 15, 2008  12:22 PM ET

Luvdatdurdywatta ...My reference was to Crisp. Ellsbury could be a very good player for a while. Has been so far. My point is Crisp has moderate trade value offensively at best, and at an outfield position there is nothing special about what he can do for a team defensively. He has more value to the Red Sox than what they might get in return..

March 15, 2008  01:18 PM ET

Porkins, you know nothing about baseball. Crisp would be an asset to almost every team and at $5mil per he is a bargain.

Crisp would be a good fit on any team, as a utility outfielder.

March 15, 2008  03:52 PM ET

You guys are stupid he stinks thats why there tradin him

March 15, 2008  03:55 PM ET

sjptrack ... If he is such an asset and a bargain, then why are not teams jumping all over a trade for him? Good field, so so hit outfielders are not exactly hard to come by. He lost his job in a pennant race and was not relevant in the play offs or world series..His value is diminishing as the season progresses. He has value to his team as insurance, and possibly as trade bait to a contending team that has an injury to a starting our fielder in august.

March 15, 2008  04:01 PM ET

If I was Boston, I wouldn't expect to rob the A's in this trade.

March 15, 2008  04:07 PM ET

Crisp would be a great fit in many places, including either team in Chicago. How about Philly? Milwaukee should have jumped on him. San Diego would be absolutely perfect with that big park. Point is, he's a proven major league player. I'd love to see the Sox keep him and trade Drew for a case of beer.

March 15, 2008  07:33 PM ET

I'm a Yanks fan, but can a reasonable person tell me why the Sox would give up Ellsbury for an A's "prospect", when they didnt want to even include him in a deal for Santana? I mean, why even bring Ellsbury up? The still Sox have a better farm system than the A's, even after Billy "The Alleged Genius" Beane traded half his team for minor leaguers, so why would they give up a guy who hit .400 in the WS and is one of their building blocks. Oh, I know why the SF Chronicle wrote this- because outside of Matt Cain, Tim Lincecum and a former player/cartoon character super hero, they have no baseball players actually worth writing about in the Bay area.

March 15, 2008  07:36 PM ET

I think "The Nation" will lay back for a week and get Coco healthy again and then look at trade options.

March 15, 2008  07:52 PM ET

unless they want to dump salary, he must go for a pitching prospect. If he was very valuable to other teams, wouldn't he be gone by now? The nation will hold and then fold in july.

Luvdatdurdywatta: amazing, as right as you are about new talent you aren't working for a MLB team instead of posting on these boards...

With regards to Crisp...he wouldn't be a bad backup, except that he doesn't want that and the Sox don't want a cancer in the clubhouse. As for a 5m lead weight...if they needed to move him, they would have. They are feeling out everyone to see what the best they can get is. He'll move...just when the Sox are ready to move him.
