Paolantonio rips Favre's legend

08:29 AM ET 03.16 | Sal Paolantonio called Brett Favre overrated and argued the last decade of his career was pedestrian. Paolantonio not only attacked Favre's credentials, but blasted the media for heaping undeserved praise on the quarterback. Paolantonio bases the bulk of his argument on the quarterback's playoff record in the past decade, when the Packers were 3-7 and Favre posted a mediocre passer rating of 77.8. He cites Favre's overtime interceptions in playoff losses to Philadelphia in 2004 and the Giants in January as examples of a player not nearly as good as his press clippings. That narrow view fails to acknowledge that without Favre, the Packers in many cases never would have qualified for the playoffs. One measure of a great player is how he makes his teammates better, and Favre was the master at elevating players around him. For example, Favre's starting receivers in 2001 were an aging Antonio Freeman and an ordinary Bill Schroeder. Yet the Packers produced a remarkable 12-4 record, largely due to Favre and his 94.1 quarterback rating.

If you take a narrow view of things, Just use the stats that back up your assumption and put them together, then you can make any argument.
Favre was a great QB who made the players around him better. He will be in the HOF, and rightfully so. End of story.

so what is Sal Paolantonio's career qb rating? how many touchdowns has he thrown? has he even won a single playoff game?

which position did Sal Paolantonio go into the Hall of Fame as?

March 16, 2008  09:04 AM ET

Nobody reall cares what an ESPN analyst has to say, they are just monkeys making the big machine work. Sal Paolantonio,Stuart Scottand others may say alot of things, just be careful not to listen. Ok, at least theres Erin Andrews...
Brett Favre will be a Hall of Famer, he deserves it.

March 16, 2008  09:13 AM ET

Something I do like though is how PackerNews.com tosses Freeman and Schroeder and essentially every Packer team Favre played on under the bus as a way to prove Favre's greatness......

Did Favre elevate the Packers or did the Packer elevate Favre?

March 16, 2008  09:21 AM ET

Numbers alone don't always tell the story. The reason Favre's QB rating isn't stellar is that he tried too hard at times to make a play and it didn't work. You can't question his desire to play. His boyish enthusiasm on how he played the game, his consecutive start streak is what will make him a legend in the years to come.

March 16, 2008  09:25 AM ET

I completely disagree with Sal Paolantonio's comments, but I think PW's post about "how many touchdowns has Sal Paolantonio throw" is even more stupid. What, are none of us qualified to analyze a professional athlete unless we were Hall of Fame athletes ourselves?

March 16, 2008  09:25 AM ET

Yeah, no one cares what ESPN has to say, Chewie, that's what it's a multi-billion dollar entity.

Right or wrong about Favre, I think it's a valid angle to explore. I'm neither a Favre fanatic nor a Hater, but I think he raises some points that should be considered since the Favre Hero Worship is easily greater than any other player in the history of the game.

I think it's more off-base to simply overlook the issues Paolantonio brought up, and point to the 2001 season the way PackersNews did here. Funny, they didn't mention how the Packers did in the playoffs that year (mauled by St. Louis)...cuz that was the point Paolantonio was making.

This doesn't take away his accomplishments. It just simply suggests that overlooking some very pedestrian-at-best seasons isn't truly representative of what kind of player he was over his career.

Brett Favre is a great QB and a top 5 QB all time!

March 16, 2008  09:29 AM ET

Brett Farve is a legend who never had the talent that a Joe Montana or a Johnny Unitus had. Wanna talk about a HOFer who IS over-rated? Dan Marino....no ring, and had a bad game when he did play in a Super Bowl. Miami was often behind by 2 or 3 scores in games when he was padding his stats with completions that the defense was giving him. Oh, and Marino's play-off record is a joke.

March 16, 2008  09:32 AM ET

I think Sal was trying to get some attention for himself by swimming against the tide. So Favre's record is 3-7 in the playoffs. Big deal! He won a SuperBowl and broke lots of records set new lofty ones. He made Geen Bay competitive. He stayed on one team (being drafted by the Falcons then traded was not his fault) and set the consecutive games started record for QBs.

Marino was a great QB too although it's a shame he didn't get a ring. He's in the HOF. So will Brett. Sal should just let sleeping dogs lie.

March 16, 2008  09:36 AM ET

Propaganda perpetuated by the sports media mafia. There is nothing to report on currently so they start "discussions" among the listeners/viewers/readers. Garbage story about a legend by a nobody!

March 16, 2008  09:37 AM ET

Why Walter Payton was not that great. His team only won one Super bowl, and get this.
"Payton's NFL career ended after the 1987 season, when, in the final moments of a playoff game against the Washington Redskins, he fell one yard short of making a first down that would have kept a potential game-winning drive alive."
Using Paolantonio's rationale then the above statement is valid. And as his analysis of Favres' career is totally absurd.

His accomplishments over the past decade have been very average. How anyone can anecdotaly snatch certain segments of Favre's last decade and ascertain that he deserves HOF consideration is way off. You can look at probably 20 quarterbacks in the last tens years who have appeared to be on the way out and then have a resurgence, from Dilfer's with the Ravens or any playoff run that Garcia has gone on to Kurt Warner...McNair...Jake the snake...I mean the thing about Favre is he is the "everyman" to the media. Kinda a non-fat John Daly. He hunts, he cusses, he fishes, he plays hurt ( doesn't seem to matter to those who herald his playing streak that he had some really bad games in there where he threw upwords of 5 picks, I mean c'mon streak-shmeak, how many oriole championships did Cal win?Oh yeah, not to mention the whole protecting the QB thing.). To the talkin' heads he was such fun guy. If he goes to the HOF it will be on his long drawn out career numbers, almost ala tarkenton or warren moon. Sure he had good games. Who hasn't? He did have way too many games in the past 5 years that he seemed to have totally "lost-the-plot".
How many times has his team been marching down the field...then the D brings the house, and instead of eating it or running outta bounds, he would launch it side arm while fallin' backwards. It NEVER worked! Maybe a couple of times early in his career he had some shovel passes and ad-libs that worked, that just fueled the talkin'-heads adulation for him. In fact the best ad-lib QB in the past decade is Jeff Garcia, and I don't hear anyone mentioning his name as a current great QB.
Now one of those same talkin-heads pops out and needs some facetime: So he dares to criticize the chosen one. karma is a bi-atch.

March 16, 2008  09:48 AM ET

Nothing against ESPN as an organization, I just think some of the journalists they employ are no more than glorified bloggers that spew out random catch phrases like "Boo Yah!" and "Riiiiiiiiiicola!". I actually enjoy SportsCenter when they aren't doing stupid crap like,"Whos Now?" or "Ultimate Highlight", especially when they put golf footage on it...

March 16, 2008  09:49 AM ET

Paolantonio never suggested that Favre isn't a Hall of Famer. He just said he's overrated and he's right. In the last 20 years, he's behind Montana, Elway, Brady, and Manning and somewhere in the next grouping.

March 16, 2008  09:52 AM ET

Jeff Garcia is very average, but his wife is SMOKIN hot.

March 16, 2008  09:59 AM ET

Johnny, it is absolutely laughable to compare Favre to Dilfer, Garcia, McNair or Jake! Only Dilfer has a ring and that's due to his defense and Jamal Lewis. Garcia and Plummer kept getting beaten out for starting jobs. McNair's teams had one magic year. Even Warner had "The Greatest Show on Turf" surrounding him. So basically your argument doesn't stand up to reasoning. And as far as your line about his adlibs never working, did you actually watch the Seattle game?

Sal Paolantonio is the world most underrated D1^&sucker and he needs some heavy duty need pads because all he does it suck ass with the Eagles and Patriots like a $5 crackwhore.
