Sabathia destined for Yankees?

C. C. Sabathia started for the Indians at Legends Field on Sunday, and it is only logical to guess that his next start here could be for the Yankees. Sabathia will be a free agent next winter, and he has suspended contract talks with the Indians until after the season. He has turned down Cleveland's four-year offer worth more than $17 million a season, and the Yankees will be flush with cash if he hits the open market. The Yankees have more than $75 million coming off their payroll after this season, including the contracts of starters Andy Pettitte, Mike Mussina and Carl Pavano. It is reasonable to think they would seek a veteran to join Chien-Ming Wang in the rotation.

Here we go again...first Santana now Sabathia.

March 17, 2008  07:56 AM ET

Yeah, Santana was destined for the Yanks as well.

Does this mean Sabathia will be a Met?

March 17, 2008  08:15 AM ET

If the Indians are smart, they would look to trade by year end

March 17, 2008  08:18 AM ET

Wow, shocker. The dark side of the force will prevail once again. The Yankees are the Hustler Magazine of player signings.

March 17, 2008  09:07 AM ET

Why is it more "logical" to see him with the Yankees than it might be to see him with the Mets, Cubs, Dodgers, Angels etc., etc., etc.?

They ALL have serious cash to spend for top talent......

I grant you the Yankees will be VERY interested but Yankee interests don't define baseball and Sabathia's interests will prevail here ultimately.

March 17, 2008  09:11 AM ET

CC will fit right in with the FAT **** running the team!

March 17, 2008  09:26 AM ET

Don't know if the Yanks will want him or need him. this depends on a lot of variables happening this year. And, my gut feeling is don't go after him.

March 17, 2008  09:30 AM ET

Of course if they let it get to free agency, Boston will get into the mix.

March 17, 2008  09:44 AM ET

I still contend signing CC to a long term deal (anything over 4 or 5 years guaranteed) is a huge risk.

March 17, 2008  10:08 AM ET

It is never going to happen it is a pipe dream for the Yankees. IMO the Indians have a better chance of winning a WS in the next few years than the Yankees do.

March 17, 2008  10:19 AM ET

He could go anywhere...

March 17, 2008  11:09 AM ET

trading Sabathia this year would be stupid.. How could you say if the Indians were smart they should.

the Indians are one of the top 3 teams in the A.L.

March 17, 2008  11:11 AM ET

I disagree, with the statement "Yankees Interests dont define baseball" Yankee's Interests have redefined baseball entirely! Without a big budget blockbuster team like this willing to throw money at what they need, baseball salaries as a whole would not be where they are today. The yankees are seen as that team that throws money around like water and in most cases that is somewhat true... But they have been paying big time players what other teams are just starting to pay these guys and have been doing so for a few years now... You can hate the yankees because every player in the bigs dreams to play for them if you soo choose but they are good for the game because they force other rich owners to get off their ****e$ and start spending some of that money that they are banking each month!

March 17, 2008  11:31 AM ET

The Indians might as well give the Tigers the AL Central if they let Sabathia walk. However, if the Mets with Santana and the Red Sox get further in October than the Yankees this year, don't be surprised to see the Yankees throw the bank at him next winter.

Even still, there's no way he can remain durable pitching in the AL at that weight.

C.C will be a Blue Jay! Woooooooooo!!!!!
Just had to chime in the speculation...

March 17, 2008  12:39 PM ET

Does it concern anyone else that "The Yankees have more than $75 million coming off their payroll after this season"? That's more than some teams have on their payroll. Bring on a salary cap, please!
