While agent Scott Boras said he would welcome discussion on a contract extension for catcher Jason Varitek, he said he would not initiate anything. "If the Red Sox are receptive to discussing it, we certainly would be as well," Boras said. Varitek's deal ends after the season."

Dont leave the light on Varitek, If sox stick to their guns you wont hear anything till November.

March 17, 2008  08:57 AM ET

OK Scott, since you don't want to initiate it, I'll leave it alone too....

March 17, 2008  09:05 AM ET

I don't see any deal getting worked out until after the season.

March 17, 2008  09:07 AM ET

Maybe Varitek should try hitting above .255 for a season before asking for a contract extension. He's 35 and not what he used to be. Being a leader can only get you so far when you can't back it up on the field.

March 17, 2008  09:23 AM ET

He got a 4-year $40 million deal last time around, right hyper?

I can't see him getting anything but 2 years and a moderate salary, but the deal the Yankees issued to Posada screwed all of that up. And while Posada is superior to Varitek offensively, Varitek makes up for it in leadership, defense, and 2 rings - whether he was the driving force behind the rings or not.

March 17, 2008  09:43 AM ET

Yeah, 4 year, $40 mil sounds about right.

I think the Sox will give him a little more money to make up for (hopefully) sticking to a 2-year deal. 2-year, $25 mil or something. Varitek is one of my favorites, but I don't see him lasting until 40.

And, yes, Posada really screwed the Sox, haha.

Agreed Hyper. Do you think Boras eats humble pie as good as the quality that Belichik serves, or are those recipes closely guarded? Boras has done good and bad things for players and owners, but I will NEVER forgive him for the A-rod announcement timing during last year WS. That was all EGO and cemented my dislike for this most arrogant dude.

moondizzle, great avatar. Elliot Shwings.!..........and goes down Shwinging! He's outta there.

March 17, 2008  10:05 AM ET

hope the BoSox noted how wonderfully Boras handled ARod's negotiations with the Yankees. but of course the BoSox owners are much much cleverer than the Steinbrenners.

March 17, 2008  10:07 AM ET

What do they always say? Get your cuts in... Protect the plate. If you're gonna go down, Make sure you go down shwinging. Attaboy Switzy....Now go hit the showers big fella.

there always is the option that the sox wont sign him especially if he declines considerably.

March 17, 2008  11:47 AM ET

Varitek will either retire a Red Sox or they will cut him loose and he will toil around the league for a few more years with the likes of Florida or Tampa Bay. THEN he will be brought back for a one year deal before Spring Training in which he will retire from baseball, "As a Red Sox, where I belong...blah blah..."

It's possible. But that also hinges on the Sox being able to find a suitable replacement. Right now, there is no one in the minors who will be ready in 2009. So even if Tek does decline considerably, he still might be the best they have.

March 17, 2008  12:03 PM ET

Scott Boras should be drawn and quartered. V-Tek will get a 2 yr deal for $25 mil just like hyperRevue said.

March 17, 2008  12:39 PM ET

Boras' deal making has been spiraling down like our economy since A-Rod left him. Plus he tries to get 4-year deals for Guys like Kyle Lohse (who finally signed last week with the Cards because of their injuries). If it wasn't for Boras, Lohse could have signed earlier for a 2-year deal and better pay.

I also agree with HyperRevue. Not going to see a deal till after the end of the season. Better put up some numbers TEK. Don't want to end up like Mirabelli.

This smacks me of Borass trying to guilt the Red Sox into a contract extension. you know, release this story, RSN gets up in arms that RS management is not on the job. It seems that Borass did not count on the fact that RSN is perfectly willing to wait, or cut Veritek.
