NCAA reselling tourney tickets

The allure of March Madness guarantees the NCAA will receive at least $3.8 billion from its CBS deal over the next five years. But the organization isn't about to leave any spare change on the men's basketball tournament court. While maintaining a firm stance against unregulated scalping, the NCAA has struck deals with online ticket resellers in a bid to share in the wealth being created as Final Four tickets change hands in the secondary market. The NCAA, which closed its last fiscal year with $327 million in net assets, has not disclosed the value of these deals. But its increasingly sophisticated ticketing machinery has sparked concern among some observers that the leading nonprofit governing body of college sports has, in effect, turned pro.

NCAA???? Non-Profit????

Anybody got a towel?...I just spit coffee all over my monitor.

March 18, 2008  09:11 AM ET

I agree, Trainwreck. I am so disillusioned. I thought the NCAA was about student-athletes getting an education while learning teamwork & sportsmanship. What a letdown!

March 18, 2008  09:25 AM ET

NCAA is semi-pro NBA. People don't go to college for an education.

March 18, 2008  09:30 AM ET

You mean this is about money??? The NCAA will squeeze every last penny out of this but the student-athlete just gets a scholarship & actually very little time to study. Sounds like a raw deal to me.

March 18, 2008  09:32 AM ET

$3.8B and you bust the chops of a kid who wants to ski on the side?!?!? (Jeremy Bloom reference) These guys make Enron look charitable!

Pathetic

That's why I went - thought I overpaid.

...and O.J. Mayo couldn't accept some NBA tix from his boy Carmelo???

March 18, 2008  10:55 AM ET

the study of poor graduation rates among college athletes, especially black athletes, was just released -- obviously, it's all about the money now, for TV and the sports industry, and a small percentage of the kids who actually go on to participate in professional 'sports'. and the NCAA gets lathered up about cell phone calls and a gift ticket to an NBA game! such hypocrisy is unconscionable, and yet there is currently nothing any of us can do about it -- the NCAA is a little world of its own, governing by persons of little accomplishment who must see it as their only way of controlling others' lives right down to their daily meals and telephone usage -- must be a rush!

March 18, 2008  10:57 AM ET

What does the NCAA even do with all that money? They don't investigate rules violations at schools unless the school reports itself, so it's not like they are pro-active in rules investigations. They don't provide scholarships, the schools do. They don't offer any assistance at all to schools or student-athletes. They keep their profits, which doesn't sound nonprofit to me.

For those who criticize the student-athletes: when you practice 40 hours a week (against NCAA rules, btw), then play games in the middle of the week during class or study time or are required to travel in the middle of the week and miss classes, it's hard to get an education. It's not the students' faults most of the time that they fail to get an education. And if they don't put 100% of their energy towards their sport, the coach doesn't play them, jeopardizing their scholarships and what little education they are getting.

The NCAA should be abolished altogether, it does nothing of value to sports. The student-athletes still get cars from boosters, they get bonuses, and they are forced to concentrate on their sport to the exclusion of all other obligations. And they are kids, being taken advantage of. Of course most of these kids from poor families see this as a prelude to a career -- there are no minor leagues for football or basketball, and the colleges would never allow that. These players are minor-leaguers, and the NCAA is their agent, making loads of money off them. At least that money should be distributed to the players for making money for the NCAA, make the minor-league system that it is more obvious.

Non-profit.......yeah. Exxon must be non-profit too.

March 18, 2008  11:32 AM ET

Hey guys, makes sure you don't sell this ticket on Ebay. If you do sell it on online, make sure you send us some of your profit

Thanks
NCAA

Have you seen ticket prices for top college programs these days? You almost have to go to a school with a loser of an athletic program to watch the games in person!!!

March 18, 2008  12:29 PM ET

Easy answer to these problems...no athletic scholarships. Let the colleges field teams of walk-ons. Force the NBA and NFL to establish minor leagues. Remove the money from college sports and let it return to what it should be - scholar athletes.

As an NCAA football referee I am totally fed up by the NCAA's policy towards student athletes. I get to talk to the kids on a weekly basis. I hear what they can and cannot do (without upsetting the NCAA). The schools and the NCAA are making boat loads of money off the "scholar athlete" while forcing them to live a very meager existence. The NCAA should establish a monthly allowance (AKA paycheck) that is the same for all athletes at all schools that is representative of the value these kids bring to the schools they play for. Let them reap some rewards for their effort. Oh yea, god forbid they get an education along the way.

Not true- I go to the University of Texas. To see any sporting event outside of foortball, it is $70 for the entire year. This does not guarantee you a seat at every NCAA event, but if you go to the game at a reasonable time (30 min before for everything but mens basketball conference games), you will be able to get a great seat. If you want a guaranteed (and assigned) seat at a football game, it is only an additional $60 for the entire season.

March 18, 2008  03:12 PM ET

kelalain -- well said. as of Hook Em, my son goes to Cal and football game prices are reasonable -- for students, not for anyone else. and for basketball, freshmen are admitted free, but after that, they too must pay a fairly high price considering they are students at the same school. one can have limits upon and/or equalization of scholarships for athletes without the massive nitpicking bureaucracy which is today's NCAA organization.

I live in the triangle and getting season tickets to UNC or Duke game means you have to be pretty wealthy and you have to know people. Or you have to go to the school. NC State games? pretty cheap tickets,

March 18, 2008  06:36 PM ET

It seems in here that everyone is pretty much in agreement that the NCAA is totally for profit and doesn't give a **** about the 'student'-athletes. There is pretty much nothing the NCAA can do about the reselling of their tickets unless they go totally crazy on the world and put some high tech system that basically makes the person who bought the ticket initially use it to get in the door. With Craigslist and E-bay and all the many other similar sites there is next to nothing they can do. We can pretty much expect to see an increase in prices if this does go through.
