Amare wants recognition as elite player

07:34 AM ET 03.18 | About five players have emerged as MVP candidates for this NBA season. Kobe Bryant, Chris Paul, LeBron James, Kevin Garnett and Tracy McGrady top most lists. Suns forward Amare Stoudemire won't say whether he thinks he deserves consideration. "That's up to you guys," he told reporters. But it is clear Stoudemire seeks greater recognition for his ascension to greater heights. "I don't know what it is," Stoudemire said. "I hear everybody's name mentioned as far as the top players in the league. My name is never up there. It definitely hurts because I put in the work and the time and the effort to be an elite player. But my thing is just to keep improving. Whether they notice it or not, my teammates notice it, my coaching staff notices it, and we're winning ballgames."

Amare's not in the MVP race. Maybe one year, but this year there's too many good players.

March 18, 2008  08:45 AM ET

You have to be an elite player to be mentioned with the elite players.

This is only the first year amare isn't playing like a system guy, and I could see someone else other than Nash the mvp of the team.

Beer-n-drums, what the hell are you talking about! You need to lay off the Hash pipe.

March 18, 2008  09:36 AM ET

Sorry if I offended you zturner.

March 18, 2008  09:36 AM ET

You're winning ballgames? Your team is 7 and 6 since the all-star break and you're bragging about winning games? Tell you what, why don't you try playing a little defense? That's what your team really needs. Teams have really been running the score up on you guys. How do you let two teams score 126 on you in a row? Play some defense!!! Shaq was a horrible move. He slows down your run-n-gun offense plus you got rid of your best defensive player. Prediction: Second round exit... again and again.

March 18, 2008  09:38 AM ET

Stop complaining about elite recognition and win a championship.

March 18, 2008  09:42 AM ET

Beer you're an idiot. It's obvious without you stating it that you know nothing of the NBA. Very rarely does a team get anywhere with 1 superstar and a bunch of hacks. Look at the past couple years of championship teams. spurs (definition of teamwork) Heat (Shaq and Wade and some good role players in Haslem and Mourning) Detroit (another solid definition of teamwork, whether it's Billups, Sheed or Hamilton leading them, they still win)
If you don;t know what your talking about, keep it to yourself.

Stoudamire should stop whining. People will never consider him elite until he can do what he is doing without Nash who is 2x MVP. When he does that then he'll be put up there with the elites.

March 18, 2008  09:42 AM ET

Tall Amare I'll recognize him as an elite player when he becomes an elite player. He has yet to show us that he can carry a team, much less carry the low post on his team. Shaq was brought in primarily because Amare has terrible low post defense. Elite players dominate on both ends, every night, even if they aren't getting a lot of points.

March 18, 2008  09:50 AM ET

Amare must be singing from a hymnbook Marion left behind. what's with all the tender egos in the NBA?

March 18, 2008  10:00 AM ET

Why would he even care? Maybe he should just shut up and concentrate on winning games. Individual recognition is meaningless, as "All Star" Dwyane Wade can tell you.

March 18, 2008  10:04 AM ET

WTF??? Someone's been hittin' the pipe a little early this morning and it ain't Amare. B&D what's up man? Step away from the pipe dude.

Anyway, Amare needs to just shut up and play. Until you've taken your team to the NBA finals, you don't deserve any "elite" recognition.

"Elite players dominate on both ends, every night, even if they aren't getting a lot of points."

Umm, Steve Nash, Allen Iverson, Dirk Nowitzki... TD and KG are the only recent MVPs who play an ounce of defense. He doens't have to dominate on defense to be an elite player. He needs to get better, that's obvious to anyone watching him play, although his blocks and boards show he's not useless on that end either. He has the potential to be an MVP, but not when Lebron is posting almost 30-8-8.

March 18, 2008  10:42 AM ET

Once you get to the NBA Finals you will get your due! good Luck!

March 18, 2008  10:57 AM ET

Put up numbers like the others in the MVP race first and then run your big fat mouth.

March 18, 2008  11:08 AM ET

This guy is a defensive liability.. He cant control the paint the way a big man should.. hes really just an athletic small forward that plays no defense.

March 18, 2008  11:27 AM ET

Defense?

You don't ask for people to consider you an elite or mvp caliber player, you earn it. I never heard Bird, Johnson or MJ ask to be considered great players. Why was that, because they knew they were!!!
