Inside Seminoles QB battle

With 33 career starts, senior Drew Weatherford will be tough to unseat as the Seminoles' starting quarterback. Still, coaches insist there will be an open quarterback competition this spring, and Weatherford will have to fight off challenges from sophomores Christian Ponder and D'Vontrey Richardson. Ponder moved up to No. 2 on the depth chart last fall, but the Seminoles are eager to see how much Richardson improves now that he has given up baseball. Richardson had split time between the two sports.

The coaches always say that there will be a QB battle in spring practice.....that never pans out. Weatherford will be the starter, but I hope that Jimbo will give Ponder or Richardson a chance to show what they can do.

They'd better ALL be on their toes with E.J. Manuel coming to Tally. Coaches and fans get a lot more anxious for a QB switch when a recruit like Manuel is waiting in the wings.

I would much rather suffer at the QB spot and EJ take a redshirt than throw him in his Freshman year to attempt to make us look better.

agreed chadnole, i think the last two rounds of QBs showed freshman need some time. Redshirt and prepare for a huge QB battle next year. Thats when the real QB controversy happens.

GO CANES!!!

One big sign of desperation from a major program is when there QB situation is so bad fans are hopeing for an incoming freshman to start

March 19, 2008  04:42 PM ET

If Ponder or Richardson is capable then they deserve the shot. Weatherford has had enough chances at QB to prove that he isn't capable.

if the noles are smart the will red shirt him and let him learn. or have they forgot the first true freshman to started for the noles. if the try to hurry him along they will end up with another chris rix.

The QB play at FSU has been horrendous for the past 7 years! Weatherford has been given more than enough time to show his stuff, and he has failed miserably!

March 20, 2008  07:21 AM ET

maybe it's the coaching

March 20, 2008  11:17 AM ET

Maybe it is going to be an open competition. Jimbo FIsher is considered to be one of the best offensive minds in college football, let's see what he does.

March 20, 2008  11:26 AM ET

EJ won't be in the battle this year. He's going to spend his time learning. It will be mostly between Weatherford and Ponder with D'vo making a push from the 3rd spot I think.

The real issue for the team is the lack of a meaninful and consistent running game. The Seminoles need to recruit better and bigger running backs and offensive linemen, and put together an effective ground game. Weatherford is more than adequate as quarterback. Greater game success overall is a factor of a balanced offensive attack.

daren23...Rix was a redshirt freshman when he started...his first year he was the scout team quarterback.

Weatherford sucks. EJ won learn crap from him. Throw his **** out on the field as a true freshman and suffer through a 6-7 season. FSU will be a smoker in the years to follow.
