Hamlin's fuel cell problems

Denny Hamlin says a potential flaw in the design of the fuel cells at Joe Gibbs Racing may have contributed to Sunday's loss at Bristol Motor Speedway. Hamlin was leading on the green-white-checkered restart, but his car stalled because not enough fuel reached the engine. That allowed No. 31-Jeff Burton to blow past Hamlin for his first win at the half-mile track and set up a 1-2-3 finish for Richard Childress Racing. Hamlin, who got his car going after gas swashed into the engine in the corners of the track, finished sixth. It wasn't the first time this has happened.

it is called make a pit stop dummy..... blame it on something else.... always the same.. what a prima donna...

That is kind of what I thought the dr. If you are low on fuel put some more in it!!!! If it is a design flaw with Gibbs, they best be fixing it!!!!

March 19, 2008  08:07 AM ET

design flaw.... hummm yeah it wasn't big enough!!!!!! what a dummy..... howdy d*o*o*d*y

Damn foreign car fuel cells. So bottom line it was empty Doc?

March 19, 2008  09:08 AM ET

may not have been completely empty but there wasn't enough to race the remainder of laps that were left...

the dr. didn't Hamlin say it had to do with Gibbs' design of their fuel cells.. That it didn't get any fuel to the pick up when the fuel was low because of the slope of the tracks???

March 19, 2008  10:54 AM ET

Have to agree w/Jackman -- must be those trick Toy-Yodda fuel tanks. My quetion is -- haven't they had this problem previously? You'd have thought they would have fixed it with all the money thown at them from Toy-Yodda!?!?!@#

jr#88fan...I think what the Dr. is trying to point out is that if you know you are low on fuel and because of that amount of fuel it will sputter and not function due to that fuel amount, then don't blame the design. Either blame your crew chief for not telling to you come in and get fuel OR admit that you took a gamble that you lost. Either way, don't blame a design flaw on the fact you tried to run your car with insufficient fuel available. This is something that has been in racing for years. Some drivers are great on fuel mileage, some watch it get sucked fast. That is part of the race. Hamlin sounds a little whiney saynig that it is a fuel cell design problem instead of saying his crew or him not knowing they didn't have enough gas to have the car perform until the gas was sloshed around. When someone "runs out of gas" it doesn't always mean they were bone dry, what that means is there wasn't enough in the tank to be distributed to where it needed to go.

Tribe13- Ok I understand now.. I just thought Hamlin was saying he did have enough fuel to finish and it was the bad design of the fuel tank that didn't allow the pick up of the fuel on restarts because of all the fuel being on the left side of the tank and the pick up is on the right side... I did love the out come of the race Chevy's 1-2- and 3..... Don't really want those Toyotas to win anyway!!!!

If not for Harvick, Hamlin's gas shortage, and Kyle's steering issue....Toyota could have easily finished 1-3. Guess thats why its not over till its over....and "luck in circumstances" plays factor.

March 19, 2008  11:47 AM ET

jackmanrob--Yep, you are right!!! But that is why I love racing it is not over till you cross the finish line!!! I did feel bad for Tony!!!

March 19, 2008  12:07 PM ET

Actually Jack I think they would have lost anyway simply because all of them would bot have made that final pit stop, with the exception of Kyle his car was fast all day.
As far as Hamlin goes its the losing excuse he probably would not have finished first anyway but he wouldn't have ended up sixth.

if??? if a frog had wings he wouldn't bump his back side when he jumps....but tribe was right it ain't the design of the fuel cell those are regulated by nascar where the pick up is is what the problem is... but if he knew he was that low then make a pit stop .. you can't redesign everything.... it is in the rule books.... hamlin is sooooo dumb...
and just remember you only have to lead one lap..... the last one.

I guess that Asian fuel tanks load from right to left.

March 19, 2008  02:17 PM ET

Hamlin is a whiner and pretty cocky for such a young age!!!! I do enjoy watching these young boys turn into men.. But not all of them do, just look at Kurt Busch and Robbie Gordan!! LOL

March 19, 2008  03:23 PM ET

Thats funny Jr#88.
I am aging but have no interest in behaving as such either.

March 19, 2008  03:41 PM ET

With age come dignaty!!! Boys gow up to be men at around 35 and girls turn into women at about 30!!!

March 19, 2008  04:24 PM ET

i may be getting older but i refuse to grow up......

I maybe a little slow, but if your car is out of fuel it doesn't make any difference where the pickup line is your out!!!!! . Hay Denny would you like some cheese to go with that wine.
