Brand may not return this season

As he returned to practice two weeks ago, Elton Brand expressed optimism that, by now, he would be cleared to play for his flailing team. That was the sketched blueprint, with the Clippers' All-Star forward returning from a ruptured Achilles' tendon to give a late gleam to an otherwise gloomy season. Tuesday, for the first time, Brand expressed some doubt about playing this season. Brand, who can become a free agent this summer, is still performing half-court activities and one-on-one drills.

What, I thought for sure he'd be available for the playoff run.

March 19, 2008  08:25 AM ET

Oh, pardon me. They aren't going to the playoffs. Then what is he coming back for?

March 19, 2008  09:02 AM ET

I hope they don't rush Elton Brand back because I want him in good shape so he can help the USA basketball team to win the gold.

March 19, 2008  09:23 AM ET

Exactly, no reason to coem back with NO chance at even an 8th seed. Stay home, recover and get ready for next season.

March 19, 2008  10:42 AM ET

Well there goes the Clippers 2008 Championship run. and they were definately the Team to Beat in the West.

So close

March 19, 2008  11:15 AM ET

Hurry back Elton or the Clips will miss the playoffs! ****?

March 19, 2008  11:47 AM ET

Elton Brand should go to a real team..

March 19, 2008  11:52 AM ET

he made $16.5 million this year, and he could probably terminate his contract and still get a new $70-80 million one this summer. and all he did this year was wear a suit and sit on a bench for 82 games. the nba, where amazing happens.

March 19, 2008  01:06 PM ET

Thats too bad for the Clippers. After losing Livingston last year, Sam Cassell leaving and now having Brand not come back this season.

March 19, 2008  01:29 PM ET

Why? It doesn't make sense since the CLIPS aren't going anyway this year. Let your body rest for next year and come out smoking. The team needs you at 100% than anything less than that.

March 19, 2008  02:08 PM ET

He needs to get in basketball shape for the Olympics.

March 19, 2008  02:09 PM ET

just become a free agent and sign with a team that has a chance at winning something. why not try cleveland or what about orlando him and dwight howard could cause some damage, anywhere but the clippers.

Torn Achiles tendone rupture = Patrick Ewing. A real shame though. Never will have confidence in that foot again.

March 19, 2008  04:42 PM ET

Even with Cassell, Shaun Livingston and Brand they still were not making the playoffs, especially this year with how tight it is out West. I think he was hoping to come back to show other teams that his injury is not a career threatening injury. He is a free agent this summer, and if he can come back healthy, which is a big IF, he can probably receive a pretty good payday, and go to a team that has a chance to at least go to the playoffs. You never know he may even decide to go to a contender! Brand not returning this year leaves a TON of questions, I'm sure that's not what he wanted!

March 19, 2008  05:25 PM ET

He shouldnt

March 20, 2008  06:32 AM ET

OOpppssss..

The Guys that are getting a lot of exposure and getting soooo Much confidence heading into the Beijing Olympics are Pau Gasol, Jose Calderon, Juan Carlos Navarro and Sergio Rodriguez...

The FIBA World 2006 championship Gold Medal winner in the last World Basketball Championship happens to be these Spaniards.

Meanwhile, Luis Scola, the reliable and highly skilled forward of the Rockets will be playing for reigning olympic champion Argentina. To be joined by Andres Nocioni(Bulls), Manu Ginobili and Fabricio Oberto(Spurs), Walter Hermann(Pistons) and Carlos Delfino who's getting much playing time with the Raptors.

It should be a monumental task for TEAM USA.

March 20, 2008  06:35 AM ET

Remember... They guys are nowhere near the INDIVIADUAL talent level of TEAM USA....

But they're LETHAL in terms of TEAM PLAY.......
