Humpy: Drivers don't like new car

Speedway Motorsports President Humpy Wheeler has an idea of what he thinks could make the car work better. "It just needs to handle better in the corners where it's more predictable," said Wheeler, who also oversees the Charlotte track. "That's the whole thing, predictability. Drivers have to be comfortable. The more uncomfortable you make them, the less racing you have. "Drivers have a comfort level. At the same time, you don't want to de-fang the tiger. You don't want to make it milquetoast. You've got to have some speed in it. That's what it is all about. There is a line. There is a line between where we are now and where we ought to be." Speaking Wednesday after promoting Dale Jarrett's final race, which will come in the all-star event in May, Wheeler needs the new car to run well on intermediate tracks. His company owns four 1.5-mile ovals: Charlotte, Las Vegas, Texas and Atlanta. Those tracks also are ones where Goodyear has had some of its most difficult challenges in finding a tire that works on those ovals. Two of them -- Charlotte and Las Vegas -- were repaved the last few years.

Amen on the confort level. When teams get these things figured out they will make the handling better. If you are using your notes from last year, throw them away. TESTing TESTing TESTing. The drivers don't want to test because they are not getting extra mony for testing. You millionaire cry babies, get in that car and test, who knows, it might save your life someday! See Goofyear racing tires comments about Stewart and his testing last year. He didn't want to participate and give goofyear feed back. Guess some people are just to GOOD to test. But they are the first to complain as did Stewart Two weeks ago. All I have to say is waaaaa waaaaa waaaaa, to all the drivers like Stewart. You are not the great one above, you are not the modern day intimidator, no body died and made you boss. I pray every week for you Stewart, but it is obviously not working. Why do I waste my time, there are more important things to pray for, like the safety of our troops, and that the new President be a lot smarter than Busch. No President Busch, you did not have to clean up daddys mess. Bring our troops home NOW so that I can Start to pray for Stewart again!

"Extremely controversial and extremely blown out of proportion??? Anytime NASCAR makes a change the chirpers start: 'The sky is falling,' 'Oh my, it???s the end of NASCAR.' I've driven the Car of Tomorrow??? it's just a car. It's got a spoiler. It's got a wing. It's got an engine, and a seat, a gas pedal and a break pedal. Just drive the damn thing!" -- Jeff Burton

a-freakin'-men...enough whining about the COT. Drive it, develop it and find a way to let horsepower seperate those with cajones and those without. The only way to have at least 2 lines in every corner that are equal, is by limiting horsepower until the suspensions ability to hold the car to the track exceeds centrifugal force's need to throw em off. Or regressive banking. So maybe Humpy wheelers "D"-shaped cookie-cutter tracks are proving to be a poor design. Trying to build a track that is visible at all points from the grandstands is providing great vantage points for poor racing ( 1 groove-racing).

I was thinking exactly that before I read the Burton quote you provided. That's it isn't it? Drive the humpy stinking car and shut up. It isn't going away.

divers never like a new car at first, remember the old car,it took them a couple of years to get used to that car to,so its no biggy

Here's a suggestion, Humpy: If the car doesn't drive good on the 1.5 mile ovals then GET RID OF THE 1.5 MILE OVALS!

Blow up the tracks, not the cars.

What does drivers not likeing the COT have to do with politics? Sounds like that racist REV. Wright. Blow up the tracks? Are you kidding this car does drive harder, but the guys will get it working. We will just have to deal with a slow ugly car, Nascar isn't going to change it now that is for sure.
