Money problems in Denver

Let there be no doubt money is tight at Dove Valley. The latest hint occurred Wednesday, when budget cuts led the Broncos to dismiss eight employees not directly involved in football operations, including Paul Kirk, the Broncos' director of media relations and Andrew Mason, managing editor of DenverBroncos.com. The first hint the Broncos were cash-strapped this year was after three of coach Mike Shanahan's top assistants -- defensive head coach Jim Bates, offensive head coach Mike Heimerdinger and general manager Ted Sundquist -- departed and were replaced in-house. Then there was the Broncos' judicious spending, both in the free-agent market and while re-signing their own players. Now the organization has cut people who worked behind the scenes. Under Mason's leadership, the Broncos' website ranked among the NFL's top 10 in terms of number of hits. Kirk worked in the Broncos' media relations department for 13 years.

Well we are in a recession

March 20, 2008  09:05 AM ET

Saying that Denver (or any franchise) is having money problems is like saying my cup of Starbucks coffee went up fifty cents.

March 20, 2008  09:08 AM ET

Uuugggg!!!!

March 20, 2008  09:32 AM ET

Franchise is going to hell quickly. Shanahan is ruining it and all we can do as Denver fans is sit and take it. It's always "someone else" when it comes to changes under Shanahan (assistant coaches used to be the targets). Now it's the behind the scenes folks who thought they had a career? Hey Bowlen, if you're cashed strapped, and instead of firing two long time employees, take a little of the overpayment you're giving Mike!

A fan but for how long I'm not sure....

I'm sure the next thing is going to be the Broncos need $200M in public funding to improve Invesco to remain competitive.

March 20, 2008  10:34 AM ET

Ah man, Andrew Mason's gone!

March 20, 2008  11:08 AM ET

This is about as Ridiculous as Ocho Cinco being underpaid. C'mon! Is anybody actually feeling bad about their money woes? Umm... mr Bowlen i'd like to make my rent payment this money and i'm gonna be a little short, think you could chip in? Oh, wait, i forget, your destitute as well. I'm sorry.

I am not buying the money story. It is to divert people away from the facts. Bowlen and Shanahan do not want to have their moves objectively viewed..By saying they did what they did because of a lack of money takes all the pressure off of them, makes them look like poor victims of the system and their incompetence and poor decisions get a free pass......

March 20, 2008  12:50 PM ET

any owner of an NFL team claiming to have money problems and expecting the general public to believe that is clueless. like with any major corporation, there is always money at the top. WAMU closing banks and laying off tellers and managers of banking centers, at the same time giving out millions of dollars to company officers who vote themselves a raise every year. Same thing here. Trim the fat from the top and let the working man keep his job.

Can't complain that Mason's gone. The only reason the website gets so many hits is because people show everyone they know how bad it sucks. They don't even have news stories on it. But of course they're cash-strapped. Daniel Graham is makin about $10 mil a year.

March 20, 2008  07:01 PM ET

I've got an extra five bucks if it will help - AND I MEAN IT !!!

March 20, 2008  07:12 PM ET

You see what happens... When you don't save your millions for a rainy day... Jackhole's

March 20, 2008  09:55 PM ET

Money issues, no talent, poor gambles on Cutler and Plummer...Shanahan's last year is approaching fast. No way he can be a GM/Coach even though he's a wannabe. Forget it, Holmgren and Parcels have both proven that it can't be done and they're much more savy than the donkey's coach. Gotta love it. Time for you to rebuild, put up and shut up in Denver.

March 21, 2008  01:34 AM ET

The bright side is that their jobs weren't outsourced to India. I'm sure they can afford thier lexus payments.

March 21, 2008  04:51 AM ET

How fast they've fallen !!! Model franchises gone bad - 1) Denver, 2) Miami, 3) San Francisco ......

March 21, 2008  02:22 PM ET

Pay attention people. This has nothing to do with a recession, or losing money, or spending too much on free agency busts last season (even though they did), this is about the labor agreements.

Bowlen is one of Goodell's main men and has already talked about the upcoming labor agreement, which if the owners opt out of it, would make 2009 the last year with a salary cap. I.E. in the 2010 season the New York/Boston teams, and the California teams will be once again able to buy up all available free agents and put a stranglehold on the small market teams like Denver, Indianapolis, Green Bay, Minnesota, etc.

Teams should be tightening up in anticipation of that possibility so that they have a chance to compete during any uncapped years should they occur.

Bowlen has already stated publicly that this is what he's been doing.

Kabbu, Denver is no small market team. You are right otherwise. We have sold out every game since the early 70's, and Denver is a model franchise. Perhaps you don't understand that Denver is the WINNINGEST FRANCHISE IN THE HISTORY OF THE NFL! Based on the location and the large following around Colorado (Utah, Montana, Wyoming, Kansas, etc.), Denver is the biggest market as far as professional sports go. It's just not noticed by the media.
