Patriots eyeing OSU linebacker

For a few hours yesterday morning, the Patriots explored the possibility of having Buckeye bookends in their linebacker corps, as they put Ohio State's Vernon Gholston through a private workout in Columbus, Ohio. The 6-foot-3-inch, 266-pound Gholston is considered one of the top prospects available in next month's draft. Although he played mostly defensive end at Ohio State, he would project as an outside linebacker in the Patriots' 3-4 scheme, where he would likely line up opposite fellow Buckeye Mike Vrabel. The Patriots, who have the seventh overall selection, schedule numerous private workouts leading up to the draft. The workouts don't necessarily indicate surefire interest, but it does reflect that more information is being sought before making a determination.

Well they need help. For sure, more like therapy sessions. They lost the biggest game ever in the NFL, but at least they were part of it and got the shetty end of the stick. The Super Bowl champions are the New York Giants and the rest of the teams....well are all in the same group - pretty much. The Patriots left pride out of the equation. They had too much of the cockiness that divides teamates - as one stands above others as being - the team.

Couldn't argue with taking Gholston with the pic, but I think he will be gone by then. I think they go for a DB.

March 20, 2008  06:49 AM ET

Vernon's the man.

March 20, 2008  06:49 AM ET

I guess this is the first T n R of the day.

They can "eye" him all they want, if he is on the board at 6 the Jets will take him.

March 20, 2008  07:11 AM ET

He won't fall to 7th, unfortunately. I'd love for the Pats to get him, but he'll be a valuable commodity.

March 20, 2008  07:33 AM ET

Bond 007, YOU need help! Like therapy sessions for sure, to get over your hatred of the Patriots. They might of lost the superbowl, but they had one of the greatest seasons ever in football. Next year they will be great again. But you come on every day and show your jealousy and hate. GET OVER IT!

March 20, 2008  07:42 AM ET

appogee.. dont waste your time with Bond. he goes to every thread every day and regardless of what the thread is about, posts something about the Pats losing the SB etc.
Dont waste your energy or time

March 20, 2008  07:50 AM ET

I like Bond 007 it like he is a spyleading us to...I don't know what.

March 20, 2008  07:54 AM ET

I doubt Gholston will be around for the 7th pick.. He may end up as the 4th or 5th.. would be nice to have him but for the most part, Belichick likes veterans, not rookies on his defensive plans

March 20, 2008  08:03 AM ET

I would go corner back because many linebacking gems have been found in later rounds.Especially for 3-4 teams.

March 20, 2008  08:04 AM ET

I wore a 2007 ACF East Champion sweatshirt to work out yesterday. I am not near Boston. Some guy was there who seemed happy or OK with the Pats. Hes a player of sorts, I was told later. After he left, I learned he is friends with Seau and one or two of the others. They are gonna think that they have respect and fans everywhere. I mess everything up. Their D is solid old guys.

Morning Loki..
like I said, Belkichick isnt big on rookies on the defensive line. He likes veterans

They can "eye" him all they want, if he is on the board at 6 the Jets will take him.

Ironfinch | 03/20/08, 06:53 AM

Ironfinch, this doesn't make a lick of sense because this guy is really talented and worthy of a good first round pick. Those are not two of the things that fit into the Jets plans on draft day.

March 20, 2008  08:46 AM ET

The Jets have a plan?

March 20, 2008  08:46 AM ET
