Will State ask Paterno to retire?

Coach Joe Paterno's future won't be settled before the start of Penn State's spring practice next week. Instead, standing like a monolith four days before the Nittany Lions' head coach begins his 43d season at the helm are the bimonthly board of trustees meetings, to begin today, and end tomorrow, in Washington. While the trustees don't have the final say on whether the 81-year-old icon gets an extension beyond his current contract, which expires after the coming season, the 32-member group no doubt has the ear of university president Graham Spanier. Several times last season, Paterno said he would like to coach for at least two more years, maybe for as many as five. Spanier is obviously keeping his cards close, but he and director of athletics Tim Curley already have asked the coach to consider retirement at least once, over four years ago. "It's a very difficult situation," said one trustee, who spoke on the condition of anonymity. "The man is a legend, so it's not to be taken lightly. But each year he continues to coach, it's going to become increasingly sticky."

I love Joe but it's frustrating watching us lose every top Pennsylvania recruit to Ohio State and Michigan. I'm starting to get frustrated.

Joe & Jay might have to go.

March 20, 2008  06:56 AM ET

A lot of alumni want Joe and Jay out.

March 20, 2008  07:10 AM ET

You'll have to pry his cold, dead fingers from that clipboard.

March 20, 2008  07:18 AM ET

Face it Rutgers fans, the days with Greg Schiano are numbered, regardless of a stadium upgrade.

March 20, 2008  07:19 AM ET

Joe made that program they should allow him to go out when he's ready.

March 20, 2008  07:26 AM ET

JoePa is making this hard for PSU imo. If he sticks around and keeps the program on the slow spiral its going in as far as recruiting like PS forever said he might have the University fighting an uphill battle when it comes to a new regime there! In home visits are Big in the recruiting process, and it seems thats something hes less and less inclined to do with his age and health! He needed to retire after that Orange Bowl game a couple of years ago, would have been the perfect ending.

March 20, 2008  08:20 AM ET

PSU football was nothing before JoePa. Switching coaches is no guarantee for success either. Ask Nebraska how easy it is to replace a legend. As a PSU alum, I want the team to do well, but Joe deserves to decide when to leave.

March 20, 2008  08:41 AM ET

Do people actually think Pen State would be better without JoePa? Are they stupid? Maybe a 2 year contract extension would of got Pryor. Pen State competes and still is producing first round picks. Get over this age thing and let the legend pick.

March 20, 2008  08:49 AM ET

Pryor was never coming here under the current regime. Why would a star QB come to PSU with the likes of Jay Paterno coaching you? I am a proud PSU alum, but this needs to stop. I appreciate all JoePa has done for this university but the best thing he can do now is step aside and let someone else back into the title hunt.

Sorry, but 8-4 with most of those wins coming agasinst cupcakes is not getting the job done.

March 20, 2008  08:54 AM ET

Penn State football existed before JoePa was coach and will continue to exist after he's done. Of course he's done a ton to establish Penn State, but he hasn't earned the right to ruin PSU football in his final few years.

March 20, 2008  08:58 AM ET

The way things have been for years is that Joe Paterno is a figurehead at Penn State. The assistant coaches run the show for the most part and Joe offers his wisdom when he sees something wrong or when a ref needs to open his eyes. We didn't lose Pryor because JoePa is 81, we lost Pryor because our program is located in rural PA and he feels that would put his feet to sleep. At OSU, he has a star-studded line and a young, National Title ready team. At PSU, he would have had one of the best corps of recievers in the country, but a weaker line. He is more of a running quarterback anyway, so a weak line wouldn't help. The chance to play for a legend did not weigh in on his choices either. Penn State has every right to ask Paterno to retire, but to do it because we are losing 5 star athletes is wrong. He has earned his place in football greatness and he deserves the best when it comes to his options.

March 20, 2008  09:13 AM ET

Honestly, Joe is nothing more than a figure-head. The problem(s) is/are his son. Do you want to know why they sucked early in this century? His son was head of recruiting. Do you want to know why the offense struggles in crucial situations? His sons play calling. He calls almost all the pass plays and they are horrible. Morelli was known as the guy with a million dollar arm and a 10 cent head and Jay never developed his coverage reads. All the blame should fall on his son and he should be the one getting ousted. Paterno has little to do with decisions in games and helps generate a lot of money.

March 20, 2008  09:17 AM ET

Joe once had the ability to decide if he wanted to stay and for how long. However, he has lost that right by his own actions and the actions of those under him. Jay Paterno is incompetent and must go. Jay's actions have resulted in many losses over the years. Joe continues to lose to Michigan despite regularly having better teams. This year is a prime example as he scrapped the wide open offense practiced all weak hours before game time and sent his team on the field unprepared. That game should have been a blow out but was a lost because the man is scared to try something new. Two mediocre seasons with the conferences second most talented team is unacceptable.

Previously, and I think I speak for most Penn State fans, losing, as long as it was done the right way was acceptable. It is one thing to lose the right way, it is another to lose the wrong way, and that is where the team is right now. Players continue to get in trouble, yes the most serious charges (namely rape) have proven to be completely bogus, and players are getting charged with crimes that are much more serious than the actual events and do not fit with eye witness accounts. Yes Michael Madeira is targeting football players. Yes he, along with the local police are targeting minorities. These well documented facts do not absolve players for their actions. They continue to put themselves in positions for these events to occur.

Joe continues to graduate his player and field competitive teams, but far too often, losses that are the result of bad coaching, not on the field play, to inferior teams (Michigan in 05, Wisconsin in 06, Illinois, Michigan and Michigan State in 07 and fifteen losses losses between 2002 and 2004). The man no longer deserves the right of extending his own contract. The university, if chooses to do so, would be doing the right thing by refusing to offer him a new contract regardless of the difficulties involved. Joe should do the right thing and either shake up the team during the spring by letting his son go and allowing Galen Hall to actually run the offense, get this team back on track with a ten win season (they only play one team better than they are, Ohio State) and earn a new contract or announce his plans to retire after the season and let the school handle who his replacement is.

I have 3 major concerns.

1. OSU & M recruit Pennsylvania better than we do. This has been well documented the past 10 years and it isn't going to change without new blood.
2. Jay Paterno.
3. Plain vanilla play calling. We mixed it up in our bowl game this year, how come we couldn't do that during the regular season?

March 20, 2008  09:45 AM ET

For those of you who say we're in trouble without Joe - Penn State football is too big and there is too much money to tolerate a loser. We'll be fine after Joe.

March 20, 2008  09:52 AM ET

PS forever is right on this...PSU will be fine without JoePa. But while he sticks around, all he does is inhibit progress. Everyone including PSU fans and non-PSU fans know he has at most 2-3 years left, so why not do what most older coaches do and thats become the head of the athletic department, and pick his succesor!! He can still stay a part, but he is just waisting years IMO...Just like at scUM it will take 2-3 years for a new coach to get his personal etc. All JoePa is doin is procrastinating the inevitable!!

March 20, 2008  09:56 AM ET

I will say JoePa was one if not the most iconic figures to every walk a sideline period, but much like Bobby Bowden, the game has pretty much passed him by, along with everything else that goes with 21st century football. From the recruiting process(Computers must drive JoePa crazy..lol), to new schemes like the spread, he has not been able to keep up!!

March 20, 2008  09:58 AM ET

Up until say 2000 PSU would regularly put at least1-2 1st round picks in the draft, but since then it has been hit and miss. That goes back to recruiting. Wallace/Williams should be a nice NFL player, but they dont showcase his talents as much as they should.

March 20, 2008  10:00 AM ET

psu is fine without joe or with him. we have too many resources to suffer any major losses either way.

March 20, 2008  10:13 AM ET

I think its time for him to move on, but I cant see how they can ask him to leave. He has done soo much for the program. Honestly he does need to let them go...
