Economy slows down NASCAR

06:37 AM ET 03.20 | Television ratings were up again for Bristol, but there's ugliness coming with the sport's economy. If you're driving a car that's not guaranteed a starting spot and isn't already sponsored for a full season, it's almost delusional to think you're going to pick up big-dollar backing in this environment. Meanwhile, tracks all over are working harder and harder to sell tickets. It might not matter if gas actually does get to $4 a gallon by Memorial Day weekend, just the talk that it might could lead to fans deciding now not to plan trips to the track this summer.

I agree with this article and have said that mulitiple times, but everyone tells me I am nutts. "R. U. KNUTTS Rev. Davey" said my brother Mike. I told him watch and see, the ticket prices are going to rise due to the lack of fans showing up. Chicago tickets are expensive, I guess because of the market. Wish I could get a $25 to $45 ticket like some markets. The economy is tuff and especially tuff here in the Chicago area.
The other problem I have besides the cost of tickets, is the availability of tickets.
Here in the Chicago Market you can not buy just NASCAR tickets, you have to buy the whole season tickets to every event. NASCAR, just a heads up, I watch NASCAR, I follow NASCAR, but I don't care about the IRL and the outlaw racing.
Want me t o buy tickets in the future, the don't be associated with all the different racing organizations. Sell me NASCAR tickets and ONLY NASCAR tickets. Remember night race this year and with the cost of gasoline expected to reach $4.50 a gallon this summer, there may very well be a lack of fans. And don't raise the tickets price because fans are not showing up. Todays economy is tuff and loyal fans want to participate. Give us a chance ! Tickets prices are already outrageous here in Chicago.

Join the rest of us Nascar. The economy, the credit crisis, inflation, the cost of gas.......we are in a recession. Like all sports, this comes out of our entertainment or nice to have budget. Dont penalize the fans, this could be a good time to cut prices to fill the seats and not a time to lose more fans. Blame Bush, the war on Iraq, and the greedy lenders getting gov't bailouts for ABUSIVE and MISLEADING lending practices. Of course the execs of all these failing lenders continue to get million dollar bonuses.

The sport has peaked. It's not particularly stimulating for people with intelligence and I think it's showing.

Personally, I can't see spending five hours trying to get out of a parking lot.

It ain't worth it.

Did you all know that Humpy has a large share in the collectables market including diecasts? There is a concerted effort to increase this revenue and nail the counterfieters at the tracks.....probably more of an effort to squeeze a few more bucks out a T shirt than other sports!!!!!!

March 20, 2008  08:13 AM ET

A LOT cheaper to just sit and watch it from my couch in HD. Beers cheaper, bathrooms are more nice, not too hot or cold, don't have to pay for parking, don't have to fight traffic to get to or from. I realize the experience is different at the track but when your "fun" budget starts getting borrowed from just so you can put gas in your car to get to work and back, then things like this happen.

One good thing about attending the races I go to is you can bring in your own beer cooler. Too cool!

I agree with most of the comments before mine, except for the intelligence one.......Like all sports including golf, there are varying degrees of IQ's and wealth levels.......You are totally wrong if you think an intelligent person does not find Nascar interesting and stimulating.......

jonis If you don't like waiting to get out of parking lots, stay home and watch golf on television. That's as exciting as Nascar.

March 20, 2008  12:07 PM ET

jonis - would you say that golf is for the intelligent......PLEASE! I used to waste alot of time golfing....its a reason to get away from the wife, yardwork, reality in general. BORING!

Tribe I'm with you on that cheaper to stay at home thing. Tracks like Atl getting out of the parking lot is crazy but Daytona its very organized and they also have shuttles. Homestead Miami is a few miles from my home so that is probably the only race I go to this year.

I wouldn't mind seeing tickets drop in prices to like $45 or $50 dollars though.

Hmmmm got anything to do with pushing a foreign car , losing jobs to Japan , China , Korea ??? Maybe the Waltrips can bring in Honda or Kia next since they are no longer the big shots for Toyota.
