NFL loses 'Big Game' title
Faced with the opposition of Stanford and Cal, the NFL has changed courses on its efforts to trademark the phrase "The Big Game.'' It has decided to punt. On Friday, it abandoned its applications with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to register the phrase.

The combined legal abilities of Cal and Stanford's alums turned lawyers scared off the big bad NFL.
Go Bears!!

This is ridiculous, "The Big Game". I say "Big Deal". There are about 50 games on the college football schedule that are bigger. This game has gotten way too mileage from the "Oh and the band is on the field!". I for one don't put too much stock on a couple soft, liberal, northern California sissy teams.

BillO- You may say "Big Deal" but the fact remains: Cal/Stanford - 1, NFL -0. Do your homework. This rivalry between two of the nation's premier educational institutions dates back to 1892. Pop-tart fans like yourself need to respect history and passion between two sworn adversaries, a lesson the juggernaut NFL just learned. It's not just about the football- it's about the rivalry. It's good vs. evil between these schools and that's bigger than anything the NFL prima donnas could hope to produce. You probably don't like the Army-Navy game either. Are you featured on one of those "talking sports out of your ***" commercials on ESPN?

Ok Oski91, what about texas-texas a and m or Ohio state-michigan or USC-UCLA games...im pretty sure those games are much better than Stanford-Cal....and its still a "good vs evil" game...so ya Big deal and we know whose winning the next 5 times those 2 teams are playing.

mazen- I don't dispute that those are "big games," and the teams you mention may be more popular today than Cal/Stanford. However, Cal/Stanford has been called "The Big Game" colloquially for over 100 years. Harvard/Yale is simply called "The Game," Colorado State/Wyoming is "The Border War." My point is college football rivalries and traditions spur one of the purest forms of loyalty and passion you can find in sports, and the NFL should remember that they just can't come rolling in and expect that they can lay claim to whatever title they want. I would expect the same uproar out of Washington and WSU if the NFL wanted to use the name "Apple Cup" (for whatever reason).
