Lions RB glad Martz is gone

Just 2 1/2 months ago, Tatum Bell thought he was shedding Detroit forever. He didn't believe in the Lions -- in certain people, at least. But now he's back, and at least at this point, he's the Lions' No. 1 running back. "It's a new start for me," Bell said. Bell arrived in Detroit last March. He came from Denver in a trade, along with Foster, an offensive tackle. Offensive coordinator Mike Martz raved about Bell's speed. Bell had 15 carries for 87 yards and a touchdown in a season-opening victory at Oakland. But then Kevin Jones returned from a foot injury, and as Jones' role increased, Bell's decreased. Bell was benched the second half of the fifth game, a blowout loss at Washington. His agent brought up the idea of a trade. He never played again -- and apparently never spoke to Martz again, either.

Does anybody ever actually believe the never ending mantras claiming this is the year the Lions are going to significantly improve?

March 20, 2008  09:15 AM ET

not i... the lions are, and always will be the best high school football team in michigan

March 20, 2008  09:26 AM ET

Hey, I'd hate to be a RB or OL in Martz' system too. Unless you're Marshall Faulk, what's the point? You're more like a cipher.

March 20, 2008  09:53 AM ET

If fumbles were touchdowns tatum bell would be pretty decent.

March 20, 2008  10:30 AM ET

Mike Martz never saw came across a play where he didn't give the QB an opportunity to throw the ball.

March 20, 2008  11:01 AM ET

i agree monguin, he does fumble alot.

here's the bottom line though, even though he's fast as heck, he fumbles alot and he's too fragile and gets hurt too much to be an every-down, # 1 RB. the lions will probably pick up another RB in the draft because other than bell, cason & calhoun, who are all basically the same RB, they have nothing else.

Another system running back from Denver. When will teams ever learn to stop buying these guys? Olandis Gary, Tatum Bell, Reuben Droughns, Mike Anderson, Quentin Griffin. All guys that lit the NFL on fire while with the team and flamed out once gone. Tatum will really need to show us Lions fans something special this season now that he's got the playcalling more to his liking.

March 20, 2008  12:45 PM ET

James, I like your comment. THose guys where great in their teams systems. Very few pure all around running backs. Maybe this years draft class can change that some.

March 20, 2008  03:21 PM ET

I'd love to be a fly on the wall when older NFL players get together for a few beers .. can you imagine the **** they talk about these overpaid, over-hyped, alligator mouth .. punks??

March 20, 2008  04:05 PM ET

Tatum is right Mike Martz is pass-happy and the Lions had some decent running backs last year, including Brian Calhoun who NEEDS to be utilized as a recieving back out of the backfield with Tatum Bell getting most of the carries......Very interested to see the Lions running game this year even though they drove Kevin Jones and TJ Duckett away already.....They need that bite back and the only way is through a strong running game.....I know Lions fans miss the Sanders/Moore/Perriman/Spielman days......

March 20, 2008  04:07 PM ET

I agree the players in all sports are overpaid but realistically should the League make ALL the money from Fans and Merchandising or should the players get a substantial cut? It is somewhat understandable.......

March 20, 2008  08:08 PM ET

I understand and agree with Guapo, but what about doing both, and cutting ticket prices...

March 20, 2008  08:42 PM ET

all valid comments guys. but there is a central idea we must all take from this, and that is who the hell is tatum bell to throw mud on mike martz. he may have been pass heavy but he put points on the board and made the lions watchable. something they wont be next year.

March 21, 2008  12:17 AM ET

Bekk has alot of upside! The only thing wrong with him is the fumbles ... the Lions need to use this speed demon to the best of there ability. He is a great back when he wants to be. Just give him the ball! Watch it will pay off in the long run----

March 21, 2008  01:27 AM ET

I agree with James Firehouse. With the exception of Terrell Davis all of the other backs that ran behind the Broncos O-Line where average at best. Hell, we'll never truly know if Terrell can be considered great. That's a great debate. He did run for 2000 yards in one season and helped them win a ring. The fact that these Joes looked so good in the same system begs to challenge if he was that much more of a Pro. As for Bell and the Lions, your best bet is to keep throwring the rock to Calvin Johnson.

uggh...our starting Rb is Tatum Bell. I'm excited for the 3 win season that's coming up.
