As the first overall pick of the 2005 NFL Draft, Alex Smith was expected to restore the great quarterback tradition of the 49ers that included such luminaries as Joe Montana and Steve Young. That possibility now seems on shaky ground. San Francisco coach Mike Nolan made it clear on Wednesday that there will be an open competition for the team's starting quarterback position in training camp and the preseason between Smith and Shaun Hill, who was given a three-year contract in early February after leading the 49ers to consecutive late-season victories in 2007 over Cincinnati and Tampa Bay. "It will be an open competition," Nolan said before an appearance on NFL Network. "It's no one's job to lose. It's both guys' job to take."

Please elaborate, becuase it has to do with keeping your job while you s**K

Alex Smith has one more season of mediocrity. If he doesn't get it done, you have to replace him.

March 21, 2008  10:09 AM ET

The 49ers are handling this the right way. The money invested in Alex Smith warrants that they give him a chance to EARN the position. Sharn Hill's performance to end last season warrants that they also give him a chance to be the starting quarterback. All things being equal, it would be Hill's job to lose. However, salaries are definitely not equal in this scenario.

spent too much money on overrate lowly Bengal Justin Smith...what happens if Hill pans out and they need to resign him? Didnt the 49ers learn a lesson from the late 90s and early 2000 seasons when they had to cut everyonedue to their salray cap hangover?

March 21, 2008  11:14 AM ET

I wish the 49er's didn't trade their NO.1 pick to the Patriots they could have drafted Ryan !!! Damm !!!

March 21, 2008  11:15 AM ET

Get rid of them both and bring back DILFER!!!!!

March 21, 2008  11:37 AM ET

There is no controversy all the niners qbs stink, take pointers from Rex grossman. Here a pointer rex grossman is good at being benched.

Good one BoBo.

This is old, old news. How can this qualify as a new rumor?

March 21, 2008  11:52 AM ET

Alex hasn't done a thing in the league. But, in fairness, the 9ers haven't made it easy on him. Martz will be his 4 offensive co-ordinator in 4 years. He still doesn't have any real weapons. Vernon Davis was hurt, then Alex got hurt. Not to mention the 49ers ran Frank Gore into the ground last year. I think Alex will win the job and have a pretty good season.

March 21, 2008  12:47 PM ET

I wish it would work out but patience is at a premium for Alex. Even high potential QBs with no weapons show a glimmer of hope, I didnt see that last year.

March 21, 2008  01:09 PM ET

Alex Smith sucks, I am sorry... I know he hasn't been around for that long, and he may not have found his nitch, but it is taking longer that it should... Shaun Hill got thrown in there with short notice, and did BETTER than Alex Smith did all last season... He had the same line, recieving core, running backs.. I just don't think Alex Smith is very much of a leader... He is shook too much in the big games, and the little ones... He doesn't have the tinacity to do it...

March 21, 2008  02:09 PM ET

Brock Lesner is going to win this thing, hands down.

March 21, 2008  02:32 PM ET

Hopefully they will draft a QB in the 2nd rd, because there is some talent out there. Alex was money that was wasted and I just knew in that draft they would make the right move and take Rodgers and didn't. Now they are going to pay the price and Rodgers is going to go on an accomplish great things as the starter of the Green Bay Packers....

March 21, 2008  03:37 PM ET

Nolan needs to go bye bye ..the team is not gonna be no better than last year until mr nolan leaves ..

March 21, 2008  04:59 PM ET

No joke there, Nolan must go!!! Alex has this year to show improvement without a doubt and given Martz track record, he just might do it,
it remains to be seem.
Last years game with Pittsburg 49er receivers were dropping balls like flies, Smiths throws were on target, so its unfair but???
???Show me the money!!!??? Smith has quite a bank account to live the rest of his life, if he wins starting job, gains big number of yards as well as points and wins. I hope the wait was well worth it, Nolan is clearly in a lame duck season, win or else. Hows head coach Martz sound?

March 21, 2008  05:05 PM ET

Just sign a grandpa off the street.. Have him play QB for 2 years..that way you can have 2 #1 picks in the next 2 years and by then MAYBE,,,,JUST MAYBE,, you'll be a watchable team.

Wouldnt hurt would it?? I mean its not like the 49ers are doing anything anytime soon.

March 21, 2008  07:03 PM ET

Who cares...Smith and Grossman both suck

March 21, 2008  07:25 PM ET

That is funny...Phillyfan calling out a team who has a poor qb. I can't stop laughing so hard.

Note to Phillyfan, your best qb is also the best analyst on the four letter network.

Smith and Leinart are the new breed of NFL diva. (Easy Phillyfan, you have an old school diva).

It is kind of like a midget making fun of a dwarf. It is sad, pathetic and some people might even be offended.

Steve McNair, table for Steve McNair.....table for one.

I am sorry Mr. Quinn, but you MUST have reservations.
